In an AGM battery the separator material replaced by a sponge-type of material that holds all of the electrolyte, so there is no free electrolyte.

And yet BMW has you program if you put in an AGM or a lead acid for the specific purpose of changing the charging protocol, and MB uses a different charging protocol on cars that come with AGM than on cars that come with lead acid.

Suggestion
In fact, if your car didn't come with an AGM battery and the car doesn't give you a way to change the programming to tell it you put in an AGM, you don't get the full benefit of one in your car either.

Suggestion
In our original older batteries without protections you could run into scenarios that would take the batteries outside of their operational parameters that could cause failure but with the BMS and added protections that's not the case here.

Suggestion
MB using a different recharge protocol for AGM makes sense - they will get better battery life and in other markets those cars come with auto start-stop standard.

My 06 BMW 330 it worked out great with the battery in the trunk,
I don't know about "the best", but I installed a Bosch AGM battery a few years ago and I'm very happy with it. My car sometimes sits for two weeks or more and I've never had an issue or even a slow start.
Bosch Platinum Series AGM Battery Group Size H7/L4/94R
AutoZone is within walking distance behind my house. Went there and got a Duralast AGM H6 battery. Very happy with that battery. My 5 year old Diehard AGM battery was getting edgy, so I replaced it. Good time to fix up the
battery tray
and clean out your front drains. Best thing about the AGM batteries is no off-gasing, so you don't have to worry about connecting the vent tube.
Battery tray
sand blasted and refinished at local metal shop. Installed with SS hardware. Ironically, the battery has a sticker on it that says "Made in Germany". Thought that would be good for the car. LOL
I have a Duracell AGM from Battery Specialties (We have them on the west coast don't know if they are out your way. )
I didn't think the battery was particularly bad but the difference in cranking is obvious..
Ok, so without being biased... I think Antigravity Lithium-Ion Batteries are the "best" battery you can buy. But that does not mean its what you might need.
Why am I saying the Antigravity Lithium-Ion battery is the best?
1-It has Built-In WIRELESS JUMP STARTING! So you would never be stranded by a dead-battery again. The means even if you left you lights or stereo on, or stored the car too long you could start the car again. It also means you would never be locked out of the frunk again. Our battery will put itself to SLEEP just before going completely dead... but reserve just enough energy to start the car again. Simply press the provided WIRELESS KEYFOB and the battery wakes itself up with enough energy to start the car or energize the car to open the frunk if you choose.
2-It has a full Battery Management System (BMS) built-in. Meaning it won't allow this battery to over-discharge, it can't be over-charged, it also has Short-Circuit Protection, balancing of the Lithium Cells and Thermal protections which make for an ultra-safe, long lasting battery that can't be damaged by accidentally over-discharging it like Lead/Acid battery can.
3-It weighs only 16 lbs...that's a 30lbs weight savings over the typical lead-acid battery in a 911. Lightweight is a very good thing and there is nothing more economical for shaving 30lbs off any car than a lithium battery.
4- It has a lifespan of 8-10 years... and with the built in protections it really can't be damaged since it won't allow over-discharge.
5- Easy to install since its a direct OEM fitment using the original mounting hardware and is so lightweight that the hardest thing to do, during the battery change is to take out the old Lead/Acid battery in you Car.
So that is why its the best. But it is more expensive than a lead/Acid battery, but the features and lifespan do outweigh the initial cost of the product. Its not something everyone want, but it is the best a Car battery can be. But there are more economical options that might fit your personal application better.

The AGM's don't gas as much as the standard lead acid batteries but they do need to be vented. Don't know about the Duralast AGM but the Bosch AGM has vent holes on either side of the battery top with a removable plug than can be switched to the side not connected to the vent tube.
As far as standard lead-acid batteries go, most H7 and H8 sizes sold in the US today are made by either Clarios (formerly Johnson Controls) and East Penn / Deka. Both are generally very good, and are available in either standard “maintenance free” or AGM. The AGM will give somewhat better cranking performance but cost more. Either type will start your car just fine. Usually when I need a battery I do the online 20% off deal at Advance Autoparts, which is supplied by Clarios. Walmart sells both Clarios (western US) and East Penn (eastern US). Interstate is made by Clarios and their nationwide warranty is very good.
Lithium batteries are neat, probably overkill for a standard street car but they do have some nice advantages as Antigravity pointed out above.
Batteries are fun!

I know I love my antigravity jump starter, but did not go with an antigravity in my motorcycle because in cold weather (like sub 20F), the last thing I want to do is sit with my headlight on waiting for the battery to warm up enough to start the car. Is this still a concern in the automotive applications, or are the car batteries large enough that they start reliably without a warm up in cold weather?
Reading up on AGM batteries need a special battery charger? Does the Porsche battery maintainer work with AGM?
Anti-Gravity $950 !!!! For a battery no thanks
I do not know about the Porsche maintainer but yes AGM needs a different kind of charger. In fact, if your car didn't come with an AGM battery and the car doesn't give you a way to change the programming to tell it you put in an AGM, you don't get the full benefit of one in your car either.
Not directly related to the OP's question, but I'm convinced one of the best things you can do for your battery is to connect a trickle / maintenance charger when parked. This will particularly be the case if, like me, you tend to drive your 996 only in good weather, so it sometimes sits a while between starts.
I get meaningfully longer and better service from my batteries since I started doing this.
Maybe a forum member who has one can tell us - with an AGM installed does the car adapt and float at around 13.5V or does it still float at 14.4? If the latter, save your money.
Read up on batteries but still no info on whether it is making a diff to get the AGM for our cars. Pep boys shows the Bosch but does not let me add to cart for some reason.
Here is how I can best answer that question...
Every battery lead/acid or lithium should never be charged if frozen. So all batteries have limited Charging if frozen.
But just because the temperature is 20 degrees over night does not mean a lithium battery has frozen and cannot be charged... now it if was left outside for a few day in frozen weather it might get frozen. But it also depends on the state of charge and the Amp hours of the battery how long it can sit in freezing temps and not freeze. But I do not have enough severe cold weather data to say how long the battery can sit in freezing weather before freezing takes place. But I have taken my Toyota Truck up snow boarding several time when the temps were going from 25 degrees to 15 degrees and during a full week and didn't have any issue. But if you driving and living in freezing weather a car that is left out in the elements that honestly I would not suggest this generation of Lithium Batteries. We have another chemical make-up of Lithium coming later next year that can handle colder weather better. These products are more intended for Sports and Performance Cars that will see some harsh weather and freezing temps, but not left outside full time during this type of weather. I would not yet put in a work truck used in Freezing weather all the time. But we are actually testing in Michigan this year with some of them so they may do it fine... I'm just being more cautious until have I real-life data.
Go AGM all the way... its a gel format instead of the liquid type acid... they are sealed so will not leak like a Flooded Lead ACid (FLA) may. So just a safer bet to not have a battery tray or some sub sheet metal getting eaten up by a leak. Life span if negligibly different though they claim its longer. But keep in mind all those labels like Bosch or Porsche on a battery does not mean it made to a better spec... its actually the exact same battery as the Walmart Platinum models. Lead Acid batteries are made by only about 3 companies with Johnson Controls being the largest and they just rebrand them all. So if it has the exact case as what is in your car... then its actually 90% the same battery if its a name brand. I like Interstate personally. Optimas suck now since moving to Mexico several years back...just lowered the quality dramatically and seem to only get 2 to 4 years...
I had the same issue when I bought mine. Their site thinks it doesn't fit but it does. You have to go directly to the battery rather than putting in your car info. I'll see if I can find the link and will post it here. Often, if you buy online and then pick it up in the store they give you a significant discount.

AGM batteries are more resistant to the plates getting coated and quitting their job.
They also tolerate high current draw slightly better than a wet plate battery..
They out-gas very little so less risk of corrosion in the tray.
Some are sealed and have a filter that allows air but not the acid vapor to pass.
Years ago I went thru the AGM is the only way to go thing with boats/ marine applications. I dont think they are up to all the hype.
I now have lead acid batteries back in 2 boats and a new Interstate in the car. Happy with all.
I don’t have a 996 but do have a 987.2 which was not delivered with an AGM battery. I recently made the switch to AGM about a year ago and could not be more pleased. My interior lights are brighter and startup is crisp as hell. This immediacy of startup has not wavered at all in the year of ownership of the battery. Startup is so urgent it has rendered my Ctek 3300 trickle charger totally useless. My ONLY reservation is once the battery starts going south is whether it will play nicely with the trickle charger. Other than that THERE ARE NO DRAWBACKS OR MISGIVINGS to upgrading. One of the best unexpected inexpensive mods made quite frankly.
There are many marine agm batteries made specifically for boats. Automotive or marine, they require the proper charging. I just dont think they are needed.
Nice anecdotal evidence BUT it makes me wonder if you just needed a new battery with great cranking amps? The gold battery has almost the same cranking amps and is $50 cheaper AND all my chargers will work with it if needed.
Keep in mind that amps is amps - the starter does not care where they come from. AGM batteries do have a lower internal resistance than standard flooded batteries, so for the same size, the CCA will be a little bit higher. But really there is no major benefit to using an AGM versus a standard battery. My recommendation is to just replace the battery every five years and reliability will be good.
There is a little bit of misinformation in this thread. AGM and flooded batteries both use liquid electrolyte (dilute sulphuric acid). The difference is that standard batteries use separators between the positive an negative plates and a looser “pack”. There is room in the case for free electrolyte. In an AGM battery the separator material replaced by a sponge-type of material that holds all of the electrolyte, so there is no free electrolyte. You can turn one upside down and they will not leak. The charging system of the car is fine with AGM batteries - they are designed to float at 14.2 volts just like a flooded battery.

Yeah I had to utilize a different tie down bolt to accommodate the longer AGM battery the website guaranteed would fit. Thankfully there was already a factory 3rd hole drilled in the battery plate.

Yes - the newer cars do require reprogramming the batteries when installed. I have a 2016 BMW 335i that will require this. My guess is Porsche requires this too on newer cars. The reason for this is on cars with auto start-stop the battery spends most of its life in a partial state of charge status. This is very different than traditional automotive applications where the battery spends most of its life floating at full charge, and occasionally takes a hit when the car is started a couple of times a day. With auto start-stop, the car may start 50 times a day, and the battery may never reach full charge. To get acceptable battery life this requires much more precise recharge calculation. In my case I have 50,000 miles and 3 years and 9 months on my OEM battery. Likely I will replace it in a year or so, assuming it lasts that long just to be safe.
MB using a different recharge protocol for AGM makes sense - they will get better battery life and in other markets those cars come with auto start-stop standard. Maybe here in the US now too, not familiar with newer MBs.

I just like how much cleaner the outside of a AGM stays,, no residue,
My 06 BMW 330 it worked out great with the battery in the trunk,
the standard batteries always left a mess in the battery hole..
Both from post corrosion and the vapor from the battery even with the vent tube..
The 330 took over 20 minutes to shut off each time you took the key out..
So the battery got drained for a bit each time you drive it. Had a big enough
alternator to keep up but the more load you put on a lead acid the more it vents.
I vote for Walmart's EverStart H7 AMG Battery. They have a regular non-AMG H7 battery that is $10 less
Disregard. The battery you went with is in a excellent price point.
You have voiced your opinion and I can absolutely respect that. Our product is not for everyone, well actually it is.. but not everyone will be interested.
I am here to promote, educate and answer questions on this newer Starter Battery Technology of Lithium Ion Batteries. Though I'm sure the entry price seems to shock you, the fact is the value is there for those who do value the extreme weight loss, the fact of never dealing with a Dead Battery again, and not being stuck somewhere with a dead battery and messing around with a Jump Starter, or calling for assistance. Maybe your wife drives the car she won't have to deal with a dead battery again, so its all relative. Add to that having a battery that lasts from 8 to 10 years is a big benefit to those who desire that. But the features and benefits are certainly not smoke and mirrors, they are worth the cost.
I do alot of trade shows and we are on the forums and hear your argument loud and clear.... PRICE. On the other hand people will always pay more for a quality more advanced product with more features. Maybe its a better Sneaker, I could buy 8 pairs of Walmart Sneakers for the cost of pair Nike. I could buy 3 Ford Mustangs for the cost of ONE Porsche....so there is value where a person puts value. So our product isn't for you, and that's completely understandable. But there will be others who do find the value.
Yea,, cost is a hit,, BUT if you compare the AH your getting to say the batteries for a good cordless drill, or a cell phone,,
its maybe a little higher,, but in the ballpark and I blame that mostly on volume..
I use Odyssey in most race cars,, cost more than a standard or AGM standard, but LB for lb they get you there..
They DO NOT like being run flat and they don't like battery maintainers, they like a solid full power charge.
I wish to god's holy trousers I lived and drove in a cold clime where all his humble creatures took driving as seriuosly as I do. Those who looked upon driving in winter conditions as a skill, carried some sort of insurance, studied winter tire science attended rehab for smart phone addiction... you sir are indeed blessed.
Now if Continental would just get busy and make some DWS-06 tires for the rear,, I'd be in heaven..
They list the size but they are Unobtanium it seems.
Lead acid batteries have failure modes of battery drained from leaving on items
and
they short internally and instantly die.
As the Manufacturer you have a lot of data on your product. Do they never have the failure mode where they instantly and completely die? Or do they do this but much rarer than lead acids?
We had a lead acid in a pick-up with zero warning died suddenly (turned starter key instrument needles jumping around then nothing).
Hi 996.2. So sorry for the delayed reply as we were at SEMA as some notifications and correspondence slipped through the cracks...in regards to your questions, different chemical composition and different structure all together so no you really don't see this type of failure with lithium. In our original older batteries without protections you could run into scenarios that would take the batteries outside of their operational parameters that could cause failure but with the BMS and added protections that's not the case here. If you have any additional question always please feel free to reach out to us directly

These have peaked my interest for sometime now. I think it is expensive but after my factory Audi S3 battery died after a little over 3 years of ownership it got me thinking. If one of these is about $700 bucks and it basically boils down to the same price over 8-10 years as buying new batteries every few years. That being said it still is a lot to drop on a battery at once, I've considered one for my wife's car since we will 100% have that car for the 6+ years and the emergency start is a great feature.
