The Hankooks were only because I bought a set of used wheels that happened to have the Hankooks on them.

I was actually looking at having my suspension and springs replaced because the ride was so bad. Even with reducing the pressures down a good bit it really didn't fix anything.

Unless you know a tires whole history ie: has it ever been run low on air, hit a pothole, is past its expiration etc, showing a damaged tire is useless.

Granted, for what these tyres cost they should be pretty special, but since the Pilot Sport 4S set doesn't fit on my car, I went up a notch and very grateful I did.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Recently added a set of these to my 03 C4S, 225F/295R, about 500 miles/a month ago. All I can say is just wow.
When I originally bought the car in Nov. 2017, it had a mismatched set of Continentals in front and Hankooks in rear on a set of aftermarket rims that were sized for the regular Carrera 2 so while not looking terrible, it wasn't the right look for a C4S. The original build sheet had the Sport Techno wheel option, so I searched out a set of those which had a set of new Sumitomo IIIs or whatever the series is called. They were older and you could tell they probably had been sitting a while, but it was literally like driving on concrete. I was actually looking at having my suspension and springs replaced because the ride was so bad. Even with reducing the pressures down a good bit it really didn't fix anything.
But after a DE event where I wanted to try and get some final life of the Sumis, I ordered the PS2 set and I honestly couldn't believe the immediate transformation. It was a complete night and day difference, as even my wife doesn't mind riding in the car so much anymore. A lot of the rattles have subsided and the ride is much smoother and quiet to boot. Granted, for what these tyres cost they should be pretty special, but since the Pilot Sport 4S set doesn't fit on my car, I went up a notch and very grateful I did. I have not yet done a DE event with them, but can only imagine the performance improvement they're going to give. If you are 50/50 on these and another set, all I can say is just go for it and I promise you'll be pleased! I hopefully won't need another set of these before I move on from this car, but if so, I definitely will be picking them up again. Can't recommend them enough!
Further, Discount Tire shows this set as 225F/285R for the C4S but Tire Rack has it correct with 225F/295R. You honestly could go up to 305R and it still look good. I had to special order the set because my specs didn't match their site. Got the warranty too on them, so have peace of mind while the 911 does it's DD duties!
I had almost the same story. Purchased my C4S with Sumi on it. It didn't ride good. I put a set of PS2's on it and it was night and day. Also found that both the Sumi that we took off the back had internally seperated. Just did a DE event at Roebling last month and the PS2 held their own without an issue. I was driving real hard on the corners so the outside edge of both rears are wiped. I went a head and ordered another set of wheels and Nitto NT01's for the track now. But without a doubt the PS2 is a great dual duty tire.
i bought my 03 4S in 3/19 with few year old sumo htr z III on it. put 10k more miles on them and i think they're nearly done. just ordered Pirelli sottozero 3 winter tires and next spring i plan on installing new Michelin PS2. i hope the ride changes are as noticeable as described by others here.
You certainly should. I was kind of skeptical given the price of these things, but it really is like riding in a different car now. Can't wait to hit the track with them.
I am VERY HAPPY with the SUMITOMO tires I just put on my 996 Cab...it had mismatched old tires when I bought it
The SUMITOMO's give a really great ride and for my use, a driver, they are perfect and priced right...
Michelin PS2' are great if that is what you like, but over 2x the price of the SUMITION's are an excellent deal.
I will start by saying the tire below is NOT my actual tire (google image search). But an example of what it looked like. When i purchased the car, the car drove fine at lower speeds but at 80 to 100 it just felt unstable. I am not a fan of cheap tires so i ordered the Michelins . When i dismounted the Sumitomo's both the rear tires inner liners had separated. There was no indication of any type of problem externally. The tires had not been run on low pressure, not previous repairs. Nothing to indicate why this would have occurred. I don't recall the exact DOT dates but they were within 4 years old.
Nobody likes the SUMITIMO's?
Unless you know a tires whole history ie: has it ever been run low on air, hit a pothole, is past its expiration etc, showing a damaged tire is useless.
Partly incorrect statement. To the untrained eye it is impossible to determine failures. However, anyone who has been in the business can easily identify run on flat damage, pinch breaks, improper install, improper repair, age, ozone cracking or many other types of failures. While showing a picture can only tell someone limited info, looking at a tire will almost always tell you why it failed.
My understanding is: PS2 - Older formula, "extreme summer performance", but more of a track oriented tire - i.e. They'll perform well on the street, but they'll hold up better on the track than street compounds will. PS4S - Newest formula "extreme summer performance" street/track tire (formulated for spirited street driving) i.e. - you'll be ok with them on the track, but they won't hold up as well as PS2. Bottom line, all else being equal - If you're driving more on the street than the track, PS4S is the better tire. If you're spending more time at the track than on the street, PS2 may be for you...
+1
I have heard the same complaint about the PS4S. I tore up my PS2 in one weekend (8 25 minute runs). But it was 100% a lack of camber that caused it. Had i had much more rear camber i bet i would have been able to do 4 identical weekends. Very good dual duty tire.
WOW, that's ugly. I've had Sumis in the past but never experienced anything like this, I wonder how common this problem is with Sumis. It's hard to believe that a failure of this type would not be visible, at least in some way, from the outside of the tire. Overall, I think the Sumis (HTR Z III) are decent tires but they definitely do not have the grip level of the more expensive options.
That's good to know.
Have a set of after market 19's w/Nexen's that came w/the 2000 C4 Cab that I bought 2 months ago. I only drive on the street and the plan is to buy a set of OEM 18" turbo twists and to put a set of Michelin PS4S on them.
BTW, the older set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports on my BMW 335i have performed well for me over the past 4 years and I'll probably replace them w/a set of PS4S too.
Here in Houston-area TX, it's 'summer' all year long mostly so that sort of 'performance tyre' is perfectly fine for me.
Further, PS4S does not make a tyre that fits the C4S/Turbo, FYI. Those were my initial choice but didn't want 285 rears. Topic has been discussed at length on the forum that I've seen. For narrow-body, that decision probably makes more sense. Discount Tire tried to sell me the PS4S as they incorrectly have 285 as the rear size for this car.
Same story here.
I bought Sumis for the rear and am very happy with them for my daily driver. No tracks here so high speed driving on an island is very limited.
As far as "GRIP", how much grip do you need for a street driver....(the most "action" I get is on long sweeper off ramps, the Sumi's are fine for that)
AND I like the quiet and "nice" ride I get with the Suni's
If it's just a "Sunday driver", the Sumi's are fine I guess... Tires are not something I likle to "settle" on in order to save a few bucks. If I have to spend $1k every few years for "the best" so be it...
The Sumitomo HTR III are quiet and the grip is pretty good at that price point.
Stability in the rain at high speeds is really good, at that price point.
They do not perform as well as Michelin or Pirelli tires.
But obviously don't cost as much.
They do not provide a comfortable ride on less than perfect roads/streets
IMO
Thanks
That was WGI in the rain.
On Sumitomo HTR III .
It took a lot of laps to understand the wet grip vs. dry grip.
Eventually 105+ on back straight pass the esses with the wipers going
That was only my second HPDE.
Great instructor, no pressure at all.
First lap on wet track I probably didn't go over 70 mph.
That DE in the rain and the following since have made me a better (and safer) driver on the street
I have gone through 1 rear set of PS2s, 2 sets of the Pilot Super Sport, 1 set of Hankook V12s, and am about halfway through set of the new PS4S. The Hankooks were only because I bought a set of used wheels that happened to have the Hankooks on them. Never again though.
I have had all of them on the track for at least a days each. The PSS was a significant improvement over the PS2 on the street (although I found them both to be very capable on the track). The new PS4S is even better and my understanding is that exceeds the PSS in every dimension. Given a choice between a PS2 and the PS4S I would take the PS4S any day even though PS4S doesn't come in the right sizes for my narrow-body Targa. The exception might be for track-use only, but I'm not quite sold that the PS2 is significantly better than the PS4S on the track (and it costs substantially more).
Sadly though the PS4S doesn't come in appropriate sizes for 18 inch wheels. That just sucks.
"Sadly though the PS4S doesn't come in appropriate sizes for 18 inch wheels. That just sucks."
Look again, I think you may be surprised. I recently bought 2 front PSS for my car, as Tirerack still had them in stock... They now show the PS4S in stock '99 C4 18' sizes (225/40 x18 and 265/35x18). In other words, once they sold out of the PSS they had in stock, the PS4S miraculously became available. Perhaps once they've sold out of their PS2S stocks the appropriate sizes of PS4S may become available...
All those of you loving grip should go for Yoko Advan Neova AD08r. They are available in 225/235 40 r18 and 285/295 30 r18. Fantastic grip and steering precision in the dry. More then good performance in the wet.
If the PS4s were available in the 18inch sizes here it would be a no brainer. PS2 in 18 I find somewhat unstable at high speeds. so confident on the German Autobahn. But for the rest they are very good tyre. The 19inch PS2 dont have this behaviour and are a solid choice imho.
