Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So couple days ago I heard some strange noise that I can't really explain after starting the car up. It was very quiet, but still something that shouldn't be there. Didn't sound like slipping belt though, more like a single "tap" every couple seconds. A bit like older relays sound. Then I noticed that every light on instrument cluster was very dim, and voltage reading was at the bottom. After ~5 seconds, lights got brighter and voltage reading went up to 14v. Today after washing my car, I had the low voltage after startup again. However the car starts normally and doesn't sound "lazy"/having an empty battery at all. Only symptoms I've had so far are those dim lights clicking sounds right after startup (got the noises only once). The strange thing here is that I've driven my Audi without alternator belt for couple blocks. Cluster lights and even Xenons worked perfectly for that short trip without any kind of voltage drop. My battery is also just 6 months old, so it's not that. I've also driven cars with bad batteries, and I'm 100% sure that the battery is healthy just from how the car starts up. I even shut the car down during that voltage drop and it went right back to +12v and managed to start the engine again without any kind of hesitation. Auxiliary belt was also replaced last spring. So TLDR: Something causes a voltage drop rarely after startup. If I shut the car down during that, it starts up normally. Once I heard a silent "clicking" sound while it happened. Any ideas? Could bad alternator cause this?

Some things come to mind....alternator/voltage regulator, ignition switch (the electrical part) and the Y-cable that sits on top of the engine and connects the alternator, starter and battery. Also, check the grounding cable at the battery and the engine ground cable. Usually best to disconnect those and clean them up really well.
