I've seen lightly used 997 shifters go for 150-180 on the RL classifieds, that is probably a decent lower cost option.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As I understand it there are two part numbers for the 997.2 shifters 997.424.010.91 - Which is about ~$450 USD and has metal bushings 997.424.010.00 - Which is about ~$250 USD and has plastic bushings Right now my car has some random SSK in it which is super notchy, I'm looking to replace it with something which is ideal for a daily driver but still has good feel. What are your thoughts on the metal bushings being worth another $200?

POST 2Original post

I went through 5 shifters in my 996. I didn't feel enough of a difference throw wise on a regular 997 shifter. If your priorities are smooth shifting feel over throw, I would get the regular 997. If it's the other way around, I would spend the $200 extra IMO.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

From what I can tell the throw is the same between the two. Both are a 18% reduction over a stock 996. The only difference for $200 is metal vs plastic. I can't seem to find much on comparing what difference the bushing make in overall feel.

POST 4Original post

I recently read a rather lengthy thread on this. I have neither so I cannot respond from personal experience. I also don't remember if it was an old thread or a fairly recent one but... After much discussion there was no consensus then one of the sites that sell both (I think it was someone at Suncoast but can't swear to it) came on with a simple answer. The two shifters are identical except for the metal bushings. If you regularly race the car, buy the GT3 version, otherwise buy the standard one. The metal bushings stand up better to repeated hard shifting but otherwise provide no benefit.

POST 5Original post

I vote use your current 996 shifter or get a standard 997 one, but get the Function First bearings. I got them and it removed all the slop from the shifter and is very smooth. I adjusted the cables and it shifts great now. I think the bearings are a lot better than the metal bushings in the GT3 shifter.

POST 6Original post

After doing a ton of reading on this topic, I ended up getting a used 997 shifter and the Function First metal ball bearing upgrade kit. For a total of ~425, it seemed like it'd be a better value than the GT3 console. Parts just arrived yesterday so I haven't installed anything yet. I've seen lightly used 997 shifters go for 150-180 on the RL classifieds, that is probably a decent lower cost option.

Option number 1 (997 shifter with FF bearings) is exactly what I plan to do when I get to that item on my ToDo list.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I think I'll pick up a used 997.2 shifter and if I have any issues then I'll spring for the FF bearings.

POST 10Original post

I have the standard 997, very worthwhile upgrade. Don't know if the metal bushings are worth it but the FF option looks like good one if you're concerned.

My bad, I thought you were talking about the difference between 997 shifter and 997 ssk. Personally I don't think $200 is worth the difference for the same throw. The standard 997 shifter felt really smooth to me as is but it was just lacking the shorter throw for me personally. Obviously this is more of a personal preference/sensitivity dealio so YMMV.

Same thinking here but I'll probably defer the FF upgrade. Putting a new console in soon so maybe I'll throw the 996 unit back in and ship the 997 unit to FF for cleanup. It's nice having so many options, we are spoiled!

POST 13Original post

How’d they work out guys? I’m not looking for a shorter throw a la numeric, my 997shifter is good, but do the plastic bushes need replacement periodically or are metal ones required? Notchy isn’t my idea of goodness, smooth and precise is. My ‘72 915 is one finger butter after all these years and I find myself wondering what to do to get close.
