I purchased fabs (not loud) instead of the great deal that GHL offered me, after some research it turned out that GHL lost hp and Fabs gained some so the choice was a no brainer.

I just installed the Fabspeeds I bought used from C4S Surgeon.

FYI, Dan (Vividracing) has a set of used Fabspeeds for sale right now.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am looking to purchase a exhaust system for my 996 after searching many posts, I finally come down to GHL and fabspeed, some vendor pm me and mentioned GHL actually loose hp, I am just trying to confirm with those of you who has one of those system and hoping to get some suggestions.
Fabspeed probably loses hp as well but I am happy with the sound and the fabspeeds are so much smaller and weigh almost nothing when compared to the stock exhaust.
Yeah, you're not buying an exhaust for the 996 for the power gain, it's all sound. I like the Fabspeed. I heard the GHL in person before making my choice - it wasn't bad but I just preferred the fabspeed. I thought the PSE was too tame for my tastes IMHO.
Whatever exhaust you decide on, you should hear it before you buy it!
I don't have anything to weigh with but just one stock exhaust feels like it weighs twice what both the fabspeed exhausts weigh and one stock exhaust doesn't even fit into the box that both fabspeeds exhausts were shipped in.
Have GHL "louds" on 40th Anniversary 911. Very happy with them especially after about 500 miles. Certainly didn't seem to notice any loss of power.
Mike
Can you support that claim or are you speaking from hear-say? I have Fabspeed and although the gains may be minimal, to say the least, losing power is very hard to believe...

It would be great if someone would take the time to install PSE, Fabspeed, and GHL on the same car (at different times of course), record the sound, and dyno the results. But then we would we have nothing to talk about ..... never mind!
I have the GHL regulars and love them. I weighed them on my $5 bathroom scale and am saving 17 lbs total (8.5 per muffler.) Not sure how a less restrictive straight through exhaust is going to loose power?? The sound is great an plenty loud when I hit the gas!!! The car really needed it!
You should view the video on the Fabspeed website. Very informative.
They show a 996 stock muffler cross section. I never knew that the incoming exhaust tube is actually "pinched" off at the end(inside the muffler). Only a series of small holes allows the exhaust to continue to flow through the muffler. That back pressure has to effect performance, compared to a more free-flow exhaust of the Fabspeeds.
I just installed the Fabspeeds I bought used from C4S Surgeon. Only took me an hour or so to install. Wow - great sound and seems more responsive. Nice quick perfomance tweek to my 99 C-2.

As with most after market exhaust systems from Hyundai's to our super porsches, when adding an aftermarket exhaust you lose back pressure(tq) and gain on the top end(HP).
So, back pressure helps torque but limits HP? I would think that for normal driving you would rather have more low end torque over top end HP... Even though the HP numbers go up with aftermarket exhaust, wouldn't you feel the torque more?
thanks,
mark
It's hard to tell what you will end up with when playing with the exhaust. The factory has to balance sound with noise regs. and the power band.
I once bought a muffler and chip from Windward, in my uniformed years, and lost 4 hp on the dyno. That was only 1/250th of what I lost from my wallet
I bought fabspeed because I was impressed with the quality of the mufflers. I have never seen 996 GHL mufflers, but I have seen GHL products for other marques and was never impressed with the quality.
