Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that performed work without a confirmed outcome
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

Cheap part, used by Audi and some VWs, but hard to lay on your back and get that one little screw in....
Leading evidence: 'Use by audi and some vws' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'ignition switch' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Run ) it's the alternator' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that suspect a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suspected cause
If the battery checks out, it is probably the ignition switch.
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
If it's below 13( with the car running ) it's the alternator.
Use volt ohm meter you can determine battery and/or alternator

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

got to my car today turned the key...nothing dead as a dodo!!!Jumped the car drove home 30 min run parked turned the car off..turned the key again and dead....lights and alarm working still!!!
Its a 3month old battery by the way..now it might sound like a dumb question but all i know about cars is how to drive them!!!Any ideas????some one said possible alternator issue..??how much will a new one cost and is it worth if expensive getting a second hand one??cheers.
If the lights work and the key doesn't I doubt the battery is dead...
alternators charge the battery... so if the battery has juice, not that either..
If you know very little about repairs, I would take it to a good indy shop for p-cars and have them take a look.
have a nice cup of coffee and wait for the diagnosis... they will tell you the cost before they repair it. Might be something as simple as a loose wire or it could be more. Relax and let them solve your problem so you can get on with driving your beloved car.
i live in HK and there is one porsche main dealer (which charge crazy prices for repairs) and one indy which is so busy theres a waiting list to get your car looked at!!!!Time is not something i have as i drive to work...i have a mechanic that i use for my other car ML who has always been good and reliable..is he ok diagnosing a Porsche?
<thinking>
If i get a team of good mechanics together and move them to HK I will be filthy stinking rich....
what was the question?
OH... yea I am sure a "good" mechanic can at least rule out the batter/alternator thing...
There is a gague on the left side of the instrument cluster. A voltmeter .Did you notice where the the pointer was in relation to the numbers? Junp it again and run it to see. If it's below 13( with the car running ) it's the alternator.
Sounds like the plastic piece on the back of the ignition switch. Cheap part, used by Audi and some VWs, but hard to lay on your back and get that one little screw in....
If you can use a volt ohm meter you can determine battery and/or alternator. I replaced that part on the Boxster I had, but when the same thing happened to 996 I took it to an Indy. His back is a lot better than mine, but he charged me for it dearly.
