Then, scheduled the appointment for the dyno, did the base runs and then installed the custom exhaust for the final pulls.

My car felt like it lost low end torque when I installed the deletes.

My car had muffler bypass installed when I bought it.

I tried it out when I was replacing my cats and it was LOUD!

Suggestion
Its not nearly as loud as an American V8 running straight pipes, but it was still crazy loud.

Suggestion
The muffler delete pipes that everyone uses are just a foot long pipe with a 90 degree bend that connects the end of the converter to the tail pipe opening in the bumper cover.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was thinking about doing this but was wondering how bad is the drone inside the vehicle.
What did you think of the sound?
Did anyone who did this go back?
Thanks
A bunch of people have, seems like you either love it or hate it. I believe a member hear had better results with silencer inserts that helped reduce the drone a bit. I've considered myself, weight savings seem good and I could use some new tips and for whatever reason, stock exhaust tips are quite expensive.
I did this for a drive around the block while I was awaiting some aftermarket mufflers
way, way too loud for normal driving
probably
exhausting
draining after a day at the track
Did it this past summer on my 99 C2 which is also my daily driver. It definitely is louder and there was a lot of drone so I added the Car Chemistry 3 disc inserts which helped dramatically almost eliminating the drone and the loudness a bit.
My car had muffler bypass installed when I bought it. The quality of the sound was amazing when accelerating from 3k rpm and up. Its not nearly as loud as an American V8 running straight pipes, but it was still crazy loud.
I picked my wife up from a large building in downtown Chicago and she could hear me coming for several blocks before I got there. The organizer of PCA auto cross in Chicago told me I probably wouldnt be allowed to compete with an exhaust that loud. It was definitely fatiguing to drive it across Indiana.
I switched to an aftermarket set of mufflers that are still loud, and am much happier now.
Over the years i have learned something simple. A race car is a race car. A street is a street car. You can make your car sound good but it will never sound like a race car. Keep the mifflers
Of course to each his own. I find aftermarket exhausts to be way too loud, let alone skipping mufflers all together. Also, I think the car sounds great stock and I have yet to come across an aftermarket exhaust that I like the sound of.
I did this to my 996 and as stated above, it sounds awesome near redline but at low RPMs is sounds like crap and is stupid loud regardless how easy you are on the throttle. The cockpit will drone like hell and don't even bother trying to listen to the radio. I have Billy Boat
exhaust
on my car (headers and mufflers) and that setup sounds really nice. Should have left it alone but thought, since my surcharged 928 has straight pipes and it isn't that terrible, the 996 should be the same......WRONG! The 996 was way louder.
You can try this yourself for free. Just remove the rear bumper and the mufflers and go for for a drive. The sound will be exactly the same since the muffler deletes are nothing more than a foot long pipe bent in a L shape.
Hi - mine came with the muffler delete. I never actually heard it from outside the car. From inside it was relatively quiet at idle but quickly got very loud as I revved up. I'm not a big fan of loud cars of any kind so I put the original mufflers back in. I much prefer hearing the flat-six ENGINE than the EXHAUST - why would anyone give that up, just to impress other people, a lot of whom hate the noise & couldn't care less if it's a Porsche.
I've done it. It's way way to loud. I had to put the factory mufflers back on.
However, since then, I've installed a custom exhaust. It to is way too loud but, it sounds so good, I just can't seem to go back to the factory mufflers, lol. Plus, I also picked up around 20whp/12wtq...

Rdrcr, do you have a dyno sheet you could post that your resulting h.p. and tq. increase ? love to see how much you lost on the bottom end, nice to see you picked on power.
I tried it out when I was replacing my cats and it was LOUD!
Mine is loud too with the combination of x-pipes, 200 cell cats, and PSE. I like it though but in neighborhoods or quiet areas I try to keep the revs down. Also when I start the car I do so with the garage door closed so it doesn't bother the neighbors.
I think it is more a matter of hearing loss than a love it or hate it scenario. I think you probably have to be half deaf to love the sound of the deletes. HAHA
To be fair, I have never heard the delete pipes on a 996 in person, although I have always wanted to hear them live. I think the only water cooled 911s that I have heard with delete pipes were race cars in the pits/garages and on track.
You could but then you would need to route the pipes where the mufflers were. You could chop off the pipes from the stock mufflers and install something in there. The muffler delete pipes that everyone uses are just a foot long pipe with a 90 degree bend that connects the end of the converter to the tail pipe opening in the bumper cover.
The custom
exhaust
was installed and dyno'd back in 2016. The exhaust really improved the torque curve and the gains were 22whp/12wtq.
It is loud and unfortunately, drones at low rpm but, it sounds absolutely amazing. And, because of the sound, and the power increase, I haven't removed it...even though I've thought about it on many occasions.
Mike
Yep, same day, same conditions.
OEM exhaust came off the car. The custom exhaust was designed and fabricated over the course of a week. The custom exhaust was removed (to be fully welded), OEM exhaust reinstalled. Then, scheduled the appointment for the dyno, did the base runs and then installed the custom exhaust for the final pulls.
Mike
Maybe love it or hate it isn't the right way to put it but I think its highly subjective. I used to ride around in muscle cars with long tubes and no cats, is it that loud? I don't think I would personally want to daily that at this point in my life but for a weekend car I wouldn't mind.
Nice !! I love a good custom exhaust !! I bet it is loud though, and deep with those shorty glass packs on there, they usually muffle the high pitches...
Thanks! Yes...indeed! Incredibly loud!!! It does have a nice deep tone at idle and it screams like a Ferrari in the high-rpms. It sounds absolutely amazing. The only issues I have with the exhaust is the low-rpm, light throttle drone and the loudness. Aside from that, it's pretty amazing.
The guy who designed the exhaust was a former Indy Car engineer, fabricator and mechanic. He's been building and restoring race cars for years, and on rare occasions, incredible exhaust systems. He came to the US from New Zealand after spending a good amount of time in Australia dealing with the V8 Supercars. He's now building custom high-end, big-dollar hot rods for special customers.
Mike
I'm driving mine as a daily driver and as I mentioned I did add the CC inserts which made it a bit quieter and reduced the drone. But when I think about all the loud Harleys driving around, I think they are much louder than these cars with the deletes.
