How do I know if I need to replace just the Ignition Swtich, for the Electrical Portion Only (part # 4A0-905-849-B-M352) which costs about $11.00 or the entire Ignition Switch, Steering Lock Assembly which costs approximately $170.00 (part # 996-347-017-07-M100) ?

Suggestion

I believe it's advised in the manual to remove the key or you chance running the battery down.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

QUESTION: My ignition switch failed on my '99 996 with 43k miles. I have trouble taking the key in and out of the ignition. The A/C and the windshield wipers do not work when the engine is running, and when I maneuver the key out of the ignition, the odomoter, speedometer, and clock display remains on. I have not had any of these parts replaced in the past. I appreciate the help.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Chsu74...thanks for the reply. Do you mean just the $11.00 electrical Portion only?

POST 4Original post

I think the dash staying on is generic till a little while after the key has been removed. If I recall correctly the dash lights even after turning the car off will stay on untill you remove the key and once again the dash will remain lit till a while later. I believe it's advised in the manual to remove the key or you chance running the battery down. You can also check your odometer reading with out turning the car on by just pushing the dial. Kind of helps when you forget to get your mileage off the car at a shop.

POST 5Original post

just R&R the electrical portion if the ignition.... just think of it as every 40k maintenance.

POST 6Original post

There was a good post on this a couple of weeks ago, i did the change on my 2003 and it took minutes to do, I think 18 mins from memory. Just make sure you have a small flat screwdriver for the two screws holding the switch in place, and don't take them out all the way just loosen. Removing the air vent next to the door on the driver side helps but I think with a good flashlight and and a small flat screwdriver you could do it all in less than 5 mins without moving the vent. _________ Sean

go to the DIY section & it has step by step pictures how to do it, says about 30 mins. if you have small hands, & dash does stay on for a few minutes after you pull key out, thats normal, & also if you turn key back to the left just a lilttle your a/c, wipers, radio will work, thats after you start car. and after you turn it off if your radio doesn't go off after a few minutes your car is not turned off, when you pull out key drag it a lil' to the left when you turn car off.

POST 9Original post

I took apart the ignition switch that failed on mine, you can see the little piece of the switch that breaks off internally (black part on left) and jammed the switch
