Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Reported cause
Alternators are often replaced when the only problem is the voltage regulator.

The typical option is either to install the OE type that has a fluid filled support, or a solid type which some say produces an uncomfortable feeling for street use.
Leading evidence: 'voltage regulator' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'voltage regulator' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill support, or a solid type' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Alternators are often replaced when the only problem is the voltage regulator.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Since I do a lot of my own work on the 996 I've collected a number of used parts throughout the years. A starter, alternator, motor mounts, airbox assembly from my Cayenne, etc.
A lot of these are pretty hefty parts and many could be used as cores. Since we're moving I'm in cleanup mode and I don't simply want to throw these in the trash.
What do you guys usually do with used parts that need repair?
At some point, they're just trash. I know what you mean about cores, but these days they're cranking out so many of these parts they are drops in the bucket. I'll admit, the heavy metal parts I do collect up and then take the scrap yard, but you only get a few bucks for your trouble, I just do it because I feel bad about so much material waste and there happens to be a scrap yard right in town strangely.
If it has any kind of life left in it, I sell it on eBay. I figure if I can net a few dollars after shipping and fees, it's worth my time and better for the world to put it in a box and let somebody else use it a bit, rather than putting it straight in the landfill. What's old and worn out to you might be just what somebody else desperately needs to keep their car running.
Stuff is a headache, I like to keep tidy. But its awful when you need something down the line and you sold it or threw it away. Theres is a fine line between being a hoarder and someone who carefully strategies unused stuff to keep around for years. I kept my old suspension, sway bars, airbox and factory shifter stuff. I sold my steering wheel, seats, a bunch of stuff really. The toughest ones were the seats. They take up the size of dresser in the storage are sorta hard to get and not worth anything. I ended up getting 300 bucks for almost mint seats. Porsche parts are expensive! If they were ford parts they would go in a dumpster no questions asked. If I was reasonably confident I would not completely lose my shirt when I sell my car I would get rid of all that junk.
I've wondered the same thing. I hate the idea of putting it in the trash for it to end up in a landfill for the next 10,000 years, but it piles up in my garage.
Reading the above, I take it junk yards will take it off your hands so it stays in their yard for the next 10,000 years?
The starter & alternator may be useful as a core to someone; although many vendors no longer want them. Alternators are often replaced when the only problem is the voltage regulator. Your post hear might alert someone in need that might be interested. There's been a recent flurry of posts concerning motor mount replacement, and one noting a very short lifespan. The typical option is either to install the OE type that has a fluid filled support, or a solid type which some say produces an uncomfortable feeling for street use. If mine fail again, I'd like to explore the idea of trying to to somehow inject urethane in place of the fluid. Re the airbox...no idea, ebay maybe.
Thanks everyone!
I felt bad throwing such heavy metal objects into a landfill but I guess that's the reality.
I'll take it all to the recycling center and at least see if they have a proper way of disposing.
I always regret getting rid of things because I inevitably need them later. Unfortunately, that makes me a parts pack rat.
Any other pack rats out there that held onto a few of these that they would be willing to send my way?

Most garbage service in the US goes through a transfer station where its power separated to salvage metal...
The guy that owns all most all of them is soon to be the richest american..
