Suggestion

It wasn't until I cleaned it with Acetone (very carefully) that I could actually get it cleaned of whatever goo was on there.

Suggestion

It's hard to tell, but I'm guessing the left wiper isn't making clean, uniform contact with the surface of the windshield.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Observe the photo. On the portion of the screen swept by the left-hand wiper, surface tension pulls the water into drops. On the portion of the screen swept by the right hand wiper, the screen is thoroughly wetted with one single unbroken layer of rain. What gives? I know wetting is related to the surface tension of the liquid and the type of surface, but whats going on with my wipers thats causing the left/right discrepancy?

POST 2Original post

It's hard to tell, but I'm guessing the left wiper isn't making clean, uniform contact with the surface of the windshield. This results in a thicker film of water that more easily breaks up into droplets (dewetting) via surface tension. The thinner film remains wet, and therefore a uniform, unbroken film of water or the surface is free of water altogether. Another theory: The left wiper has deposited something (silcone?) onto the surface of the windshield. This material has a higher surface energy, resulting in dewetting and droplet formation. (or perhaps there is something like a film of silicone or wax on the entire surface, and the right wiper has removed it.)

POST 3Original post

When I got my car I had problems with some type of goo on the windshield. It wasn't until I cleaned it with Acetone (very carefully) that I could actually get it cleaned of whatever goo was on there. Then new wiper blades and everything worked right after that. Anybody ever put some RainX on there? That causes the water to bead, but it is damn difficult to remove from the windshield.

POST 4Original post

Quotes source post: 16198076

The Rain X theory is a good one. Was the windshield treated with Rain X? Rain X is a polysiloxane (silicone type polymer). It can be removed from the glass surface by abrasion. Maybe one wiper is rougher or worn or a different type that removed the Rain X treatment?

POST 5Original post

The windshield had some sort of wax/RainX ect on it, the right hand wiper was probably dirty/old/hard and scraped it off.

POST 6Original post

I use Rainx , however, it does wear away over time.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks gents. I like the idea of cleaning the windshield with acetone while replacing wipers at the same time. I’ll do that.
