Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I recently did a full flush (while replacing heater core, water pump and thermostat)...this is what I used....keep in mind, this is not a mixing with the old coolant...this was a flush and replace...it is yellow...mixed 50/50 with distilled water....I am set for the next 5 years...
Leading evidence: 'Set next 5 years' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'same' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean (no foam)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Getting ready to go on a 400 mile trek through NH (and Back). As posted before, I am not sure if I am losing antifreeze or not but I am thinking it's a good idea to bring some just incase I need to add. I've already added some distilled water so I would like to even off with anti freeze since winter is looming. What can I get at autozone, advance or oreilly's that would work? Hopefully I wont need to add any but just incase. All I know is that the coolant is yellow and the water pump is original at 70k (winter project this year).
Regarding my problem, I've been under the car and seen no signs of leakage. The coolant looks fine. Not funny smoke from exhaust and oil cap is clean (no foam). Maybe just air pockets since I didn't fully tighten the cap one day and noticed when steam coming from rear. Car never ran hot.
Thanks.
Oil for our engines needs to be carefully chosen, but as far as I'm aware coolant specs are not critical.
Unless our block or radiators are made of aluminum different from other manufacturers or Porsche coolant provides special lubricant for water pump bearings, then the cheapest one at local auto parts store should make no difference.
If you want an opinion here it is. Do NOT get just any ole antifreeze and do NOT mix it in there. Porsche antifreeze is what to use to top it off. Mixing antifreeze could leave you with a jello like substance and that will clog up everything, also provide no cooling. Not a good situation. I know Porsche antifreeze is expensive but that is what you need. Plan your route and see if there are any Porsche dealers along the way. Stop in and buy the right stuff.
When I did the Water pump on my Boxster, I bought coolant at autozone (or similar) that the guys on the 986 forum told me to use for the reason of jell forming. That coolant was pink though and this being yellow I knew not to mix but also knew enough to ask the question. I will just add distilled for now and address with water pump.
When I go to VW, what specifically am I asking for?
Thanks everyone for the help. Looking forward to this ride with my American steel buddies.
VW G13 Coolant. It replaces the G12 that the 996 and pretty much all German cars now days use. The aftermarket version can be found at auto part stores too. Up here they go by the brand name OEM and they have specific coolants for different manufacturers (unlike many others that state their coolant is good for all makes and models). I've used this in my Passat without any issues and would use it in the 996 if needed however, the price was the same or slightly more than the VW coolant but since it was easier to get, the last time I used them instead of making a trip to the Vee Dub dealer.
Other small while you're there coolant parts to replace are:
- Coolant cap - back if the engine
- Coolant T piece block to AOS - get a metal one from URO parts or rachet and speigal? In the US
+996 on genuine coolant but knowing Porsche the VW stuff is probably the same. Would be awesome if someone could do a coolant analysis see what's really in it! I know there is UV dye to see leaks.
I bought some coolant for my VW (OEM brand I think) and if it was cheaper than the Porsche coolant it wasn't cheaper by much. In the scheme of things, over-paying a few bucks for genuine Porsche coolant isn't going to hurt your wallet much when you look at the long term.
Other than the jellying issue, if your doing a full flush, why would it matter what antifreeze you use. I thought it just kept the water from freezing. What am I missing?
