I replaced my cigarette ligher in the dash with a USB outlet.

Swapped the cigarette lighter for the 12v power socket from the non-smoker's kit and use this:

I used a dremel and knife to cut a notch in the USB so it fit in place and then glued the LED in the back.

I�m looking for information and suggestions on where to get some small USB ports to add to my 1999 996 dash and cockpit while I have things torn apart to do my glove box installation and heater flap repair . Thanks.
I replaced my cigarette ligher in the dash with a USB outlet. The power for the lighter is "always on" and you probably don't want that for your USB power, so you'll have to get ACC power from another source. I used the phone adapter that is in the dash (but unused in most vehicles) to get that power. In my case I got one that shows system voltage, and it's available in other colors as well.
I bought these and modified a blank switch to accept the plug:

I then added an LED to illuminate it when the dash and button lights are on. I used blue instead of orange because I switched out my LEDs to blue in all my buttons.

Not trying to answer for Jim, but I started with a blank panel (no heated seats). I think there is still room on that plate to install at least one USB port between the switches, if you have them.
Post #382 shows one that I installed. It's for stereo input, but a powered port could just as easily go there.

I moved the heated seat buttons to where the blanks were behind the ashtray. I used a dremel and knife to cut a notch in the USB so it fit in place and then glued the LED in the back.
I just found a USB port that I�m going to try. They were on Amazon and quite reasonable.

I did install this round version in a couple of other cars though.
