gave me my money back and said it won't happen again) I bought another MAF, cleaned the K&N, designed a heatshield to box it in (and had an actual 20* drop in IATs) and ran that for awhile until THAT MAF went.

But this time I pulled the K&N kit and installed the factory airbox, but deleted the resonator.

I call K&N to ask about why I was getting a low fuel flashing light after I installed the K&N into my 1999 996 only to learn they did not make one for this year.

You are also ignoring the feedback that many have installed on a 1999 without an issue.

There was probably a day when that was the case -- that is almost never the case these days -- the first-level support reps are usually the dumbest persons in the room -- they are looking up stuff in a database and talking off of a script.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I call K&N to ask about why I was getting a low fuel flashing light after I installed the K&N into my 1999 996 only to learn they did not make one for this year. Has anyone had success installing one? Any trick to it?
Im sure many will say put the stock one in or something to that effect but its my car and I like the sound. If I cant work it out its no biggie I will take it out and buy something that will work. Just looking for some helpful insight.
Thank you!
As they said in your other thread the filter kit has nothing to do with your low fuel light issue. U have a coincedental problem. Pull the sender/pump, it takes 15 minutes and make sure its reading back to the gauge. Im guessing its a ground issue off the sender.
I'm looking at K&N's website right now on my other monitor and it's showing a kit for a '99. Since you can't be bothered to post a pic, I really don't know what to tell you...
I called them. They did not make a kit for a 1999.
Some places advertise and sell them but they did not make one for my year.
Show you a picture of what?
They sell a filter but not a kit. I’ve been to the website and called. Why bother posting if your only interested in disproving the facts? That’s if no use.
I am asking if anyone has successfully installed one in a 99.
I will definitely check out the sender.
Brian, they make a drop in filter for the stock air box also. Thus SoCal911t request. People are trying to help you, but you seem to have a bad attitude with them.
I think I am speaking to "The kit". It came installed on my 99 when I bought it (literally just installed before my purchase by my indy for the PO), and it was giving me codes. My tech and I decided to go back to stock, which from what I have read here, is better and I haven't had a code in a year. 808Bill bought mine and I don't think he had much luck either. It looks like Porsche did it right on the airbox and hard to improve. It does look great though. As for the sound difference, I didn't really notice a difference, but I am sure I was just overexcited to not have any codes pop up. The codes had to do with fuel/air issues I believe.
Maybe it works for some or I did not do something right to the install, I dunno. I am far from a good source on that.
I have run that kit in my '99. OPINION: don't bother unless you want a convenient way to suck hot air and dust into an oiled cone filter. I did not have any issues like the one you're describing.
It did not cause any issues. It does, as I recall, require moving the secondary air injection (smog) pump if you have one.
You'll need a new MAF soon, especially if you decide to re-oil the filter yourself.
Fill your C4 with fuel, then disconnect the
battery
for ten minutes.
The kit you're referencing is marked as clearance on a few sites - I'm guessing it's now out of production and that's why K&N doesn't think they make one. They probably don't any longer...
Why do u keep argueing with yourself? There is little to no love on this board for aftermarket intakes. They have been dyno proven to remove power from a porsche. Others have posted that they have or do run the k&n on a '99 so its possible. Every vendor does list the '99 as a compatable year. We all understand that k&n told u differently, but that guy is just looking at a computer screen and probably has very little first knowledge of the thousands of products they sell.
I had a weathertech rep tell me that i could not get front mats for my truck because it was a quad cab eventhough they were sold for a single cab. They r the exact same sheet metal so i ordered the single cab ones and they fit fine. Point being there website said NO so he said no, but in reality the answere was yes. Sometimes u just have to be smarter then the computer in front of u.
If u like the sound then keep it. The masses here will continue to express their opinion on a pourly designed priduct regaurdless.
U still have not posted a pic of it installed so even the guys that have run this set up still cant help. We need to see how it fits to determine if something is wrong with your install...ie your earlier zip tie comment.
There is nothing involved in installing this kit that makes the fuel sender quit working on a '99 C4 six-speed. I even turned all the bolts myself.
Here's the instruction PDF K&N printed. Apparently, at the time they wrote the manual, they were laboring under the misconception that the product existed...
Is your car a Tiptronic? If so, check out Page 1, photo 3 and subsequent steps involving the vent line. I did not do this part of the install as my car is not a Tip. No idea if this would cause your issue - but it's a potential difference between your install and mine.

Not the friendliest bunch huh?
Do you really think I care about the snide remarks and criticism?
I know there are intelligent people willing to help out when needed and then we have those guys who well ah never mind.
I have the day off tomorrow. Im going to put the original air box back and see if it stops misbehaving. That was one intelligent suggestion I received on another forum where there are apparently people more inclined to be helpful.
Got some strange people on this site.
Hoss, if you came here to make friends, someone lied to you.
Kinda reads that way, but I got my degrees in the humanities, so my ability to actually understand what smart people write is probably suspect.
Feel free to use the installation instructions I unhelpfully attached to your thread. Even though they apply to a product that was apparently never made for my car, I found them useful.
?????? Normally, I'd agree with you. There are times when this site can be brutal. I don't think this is an example of that at all. Looking at the posts in this thread, a lot of people have tried to help you with very specific information. They've asked for a picture, but you can't be bothered to provide one. You keep stating that K&N doesn't have a 1999 kit, which is all the more reason why you should post a pic of the kit you do have. You are also ignoring the feedback that many have installed on a 1999 without an issue. Taking the word of a K&N service rep as gospel, over real world experiences, and over resellers who actually sell the product, is generally not a good idea. It would be nice if customer service reps had definitive knowledge about everything. There was probably a day when that was the case -- that is almost never the case these days -- the first-level support reps are usually the dumbest persons in the room -- they are looking up stuff in a database and talking off of a script. If you escalate 3 or 4 times -- then you might -- emphasis on might -- find somebody who knows what they are talking about. You've decided yourself that it isn't compatible with a 1999 and won't listen to anything anyone else has to say that doesn't align with your presumption.
I have a (3/98) 99 C2, my car came with a K&N 57-7000 kit in the frunk, and a few receipts from the previous owner..one of which was for a new MAF a few months before. I installed the K&N kit the first weekend I had the car. I was hooked on Darth Vader's deep breathing .. then in about a month, the CEL came. MAF.. tried cleaning it with CRC MAF cleaner..don't do this. Bought new MAF... left the K&N kit installed. 6 months later, returned the new MAF under warranty for a new one..figured it was a faulty one, that's why they have the 2 year warranty. Well by the time I returned my second MAF (RockAuto does not like this.. gave me my money back and said it won't happen again) I bought another MAF, cleaned the K&N, designed a heatshield to box it in (and had an actual 20* drop in IATs) and ran that for awhile until THAT MAF went. Parts Bull has a sh*tty return policy so I figured its long enough..went back to Rock Auto and picked up another one. But this time I pulled the K&N kit and installed the factory airbox, but deleted the resonator. Darth Vader has been silenced, but now on start up for about a minute somebody is running a vacuum cleaner in my engine bay..it was probably there all along, just that Darth Vader either breathed louder..or terrified the SAI pump into submission.. that or I have some more parts to buy soon. No CELs with the newest MAF and the stock airbox.
K&N 57-7000 kit for sale.. with custom heat shield to box it in. $150 I'm going to build my own, or pickup up a different OEM airbox that has been proven to be better.
I've used various K&N filters (various vehicles) for decades without issue. But I am thinking about grabbing a dry filter to have as a backup while I clean and dry the oiled unit. I clean mine every 6 months when I change my oil.
Also, I will see how the oil looks when I get my UOA back and then do a second with the factory airbox next service noting cleanliness of my throttle body...Stay tuned!
Just to let you know, any of those filters allow fine dust into your engine. If you check an ,oil analysis, you might see height silicone levels. That’s sand, silicon oxide. It’s abrasive. And they don’t increase performance, as noted above. If you want more sound, open windows or record an F1 race and play back over your stereo, lol.
The K&N debate about silica levels will never end,, I've run them in the desert on
a buggy for years, never had a bad oil sample returned. I do run a outerwear cover
as well as a bell top but when its moving the engine is engulfed in dust and no issues,
Properly cleaned and oiled, no issues..
That being said other than sound no advantage to the style of the K&N on the 911,
You'd have to be good to beat Porsche, they do intake design for darn near everybody.
Even many of their competitors.
Tough act to follow.
