You must check on it to be sure it is pressurized and the fans are running.

I also recommend against traps, for the odor issue, if they're not emptied regularly.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My car will soon be sitting in storage possibly for months.
What do you guys use to keep the mice our or if necessary dead. I want to put something inside the bonnet, engine bay and obviously interior. I once met a pest control guy who had this blue dough type material that would attract them when in the area. They would eat it and die. I just havent found it yet.
Id like to hear what my friends who have to store there car like me do.
2 Cats, I have no rodents around my property anymore.
Also, should one of those "poisoned "rodents die in your car, the stench is overwhelming... Ask me how I know.
Bounce fabric softener sheets. Not another brand. Recommendations for years from a variety of websites. I use these in my boats, lawn tractor, atv and Porsche. No issues for 20 years, knock on wood.
Every residence in Los Angeles County needs 3 Tomcat refillable rat and mouse stations at the edge of property:

This is the only product that will eliminate all rodents in an area.
Here are the things I do for where I store my cars in a 36x 48 space:
1) mice/rat bait that makes them thirsty...when they drink they die
2) 8 snap traps around inside perimeter
3) 10 battery operated electrocution traps around inside perimeter
4) dryer sheets around all the wheels where they touch the ground
5) cat hair sprinkled around wheels
Most effective is the electricution....almost all are caught with that technique.
I've been winter storing various toys in heated and unheated spaces for many years, and use a combination of mothballs (engine compartment, t/frunk, ground, motorcycles) and Bounce dryer sheets (passenger compartment). I've never had a rodent problem with this combination. I also recommend against traps, for the odor issue, if they're not emptied regularly. Few things smell worse than a mouse that's been dead a few days.
If it is on a concrete floor and mice are all that need to be kept out, a 10 to 12 aluminum flashing circle surrounding the car will do that nicely. Mice cant climb the aluminum wall. Rodents dying inside the car after ingesting poison isnt fun and finding them is even harder. I did this to my 928 when I parked it in a mouse infested garage and it was there for 2 years with no rodents getting inside that wall. Mothballs stink, poison may lead to death smell inside your car, and traps are lots of work.
Get the moth ***** that air out in two hours for frunk and engine compartment. I've heard mixed reviews on dryer sheets, but I use them inside anyway. Mouse traps every where around car checked daily. Have also used the mouse poison pellets in the garage regards of a stored car there. Never had any smelly dead ones go unfound, but empty boxes and less mice around.
Mice can climb foil, their claws will get in to it.. BTDT
they sell a thing called a cat-mat, they are about 4x4 feet, they are to keep cats off the hood,
Works like an electric fencer. 4 of them under the car does the trick,
but I've seen mice get to stuff using the darnedest methods...
Or if your like me,, Kill them ,,, Nuke them from orbit its the only way to be sure..
4 5gallon roller traps will also do the trick. Basically a 5 gallon bucket with 3 gallons of water and
a roller covered with strawberry jam, use a yardstick to get them to the shaft that holds the roller,
when they crawl out on the roller they fall in and drown. I've seen one of these get over a hundred
mice in a day in a dairy barn.. Its the same principal as a yellow jacket trap, kills enough of them that
it can cut the local population to nothing..
Does this really work....do you have a picture of the setup? It sounds brilliant and worth a try. Also, with that many little carcasses floating in water how do you dispose of the carcasses?
A few years ago hunting in the rockies, we ended up camping in mouse hell, I killed more than I can count in my tent.. about 40 with my air pistol.
lost track of the ones that I killed with 2 flat rocks and a string.. They had no fear,, they would come in and run around day or night,,
also had small chipmunks that were even more destructive.
I had them jump from the ground up to my cot at night and run around on my sleeping bag with me in it.. So make sure your barrier is about 2' high..
There was a company that made a inflatable dome you could park a car in, used a small low voltage fan to keep it inflated.. Haven't seen it in a while
But I bet one could be built..
That's pretty clever. It reminds me of the rat guards ships use when they're tied up at dock. The lines can be like a rat freeway.
I have one car outside under a cover that is awaiting a timing belt replacement that I sometimes worry about. Fortunately the neighbor's cat has decided that hanging out in the shade underneath it is a great way to pass the time and I've seen no evidence of any mouse activity (yet).
I had a problem with mice ripping the hood insulator of my MKIV Supra and building a cotton/fiber bed inside of my airbox. I came across this video since my wife is into organics/essential oils.
You Tube
I was a skeptical at first but decided to give it a try since it was around $20 since it wouldn't kill them (didn't want to clean that up), won't make a mess, smells like winterfresh gum and it's portable to put anywhere outside and inside of my car.
Here is what I did and honestly, it is working so far.
No more spider webs in my mirror buckets, fender well and around my bumper and thank goodness, no more ripped insulator,
no more mice and no more mice droppings
. I add 5 drops every week to replenish it.
1)I went to TJ Max, Marshalls and bought a 3 pack of the re-usable coffee pod filters.
2)I also bought a 10oz bottle of Peppermint oil at TJ Max from the women's beauty section. They also have them near the checkout isle.
3)I added a cotton ball inside and dropped 5 drops to each side of the cotton ball.
4)I placed 1 inside of my engine bay (on top of valve cover where the mice was pulling the fiber and clears my hood), 1 inside of my airbox and 1 inside on the center console.

I've used this in a 2 car Clearspan 24x26 fabric building which definitely had mice in it. I never had mice in my SRT6 Crossfire Convertible for the 5 years I had it.
The theory is- The fans keep it pressurized. Any opening such as the bottom of the zippers where mice would likely access, there is air escaping. I guess they sense this is "outside" because of the draft escaping and not ideal for nesting.
You must check on it to be sure it is pressurized and the fans are running. This one uses fiberglass tent poles all the way around the perimeter, so it stays erect so you can enter with out it collapsing on the car. Also the fans have removable fabric socks over them which act as filters. They only need to be rinsed every so often.
Ten years ago they were about $700 for one which will fit the 996.
As a back up, I also would add "Mouse Away", a peppermint/spearmint oil concentrate. You can put it on cotton ***** or directly on the carpet and even into the vent openings. Really, anywhere you like. It over loads the mouse's sense of smell which they rely upon to navigate and survive. The added benefit, is you cars smells nice vs mothball stink. You must continually add to it every so often.
I had gone long periods with out the scent and still had no mice problem.

Or you can just keep them out with an aluminum flashing wall like the picture above and call it a day. Deterrents such as ivory soap and mothballs and such, still allow the wrongdoers to enter the property and do as they may. A simple barrier as pictured above doesnt allow trespassing, or damage to belongings. Hoping they are deterred by scents isnt nearly as good as providing simple physical barriers
Please clarify which is awful? A permanent peppermint smelling car sounds not so pleasing. I would prefer a vanilla scent like the gentlemens club ladies have, but I guess that doesnt repel mice?
Mice- bottom of the food chain for a reason.. You only need to go through having a nice car trashed by them once.. it changes your point of view,, and despite it workign for some,, barriers don't always work.. I've watched a pair of chipmunks open a jar of peanut butter.. They teamed up and screwed the lid off..
I also agree I would do anything to keep mice out. Depending on the population and location I would use all the methods. I do however know that if you cant kill them all, its better to make it extremely difficult for them to enter. The barrier method worked well for me without other deterrents.
I guess if you like the smell of peppermint in your car it would be a good choice, again chipmunks rats and squirrel need not apply here, thats a different problem for your engine bay.
The two chipmunks were the small alpine variety, they are the same
size as a field mouse,, about 2" long for a big one. My post about the buggers in
my camp ,, A mouse can jump straight up about 2' at lease the ones out in the woods can.
Food is the big motivator,, if they can smell something edible they are diabolical..
Put three of these at the edges of your property and all vermin gone within two weeks (unless you live next to a large field or in Los Angeles County):

You see larger versions of these at businesses because they are the only product that works. Peppermint spray and tin foil hats really? Refills available in buckets. Never saw or smelled a deceased one.
I think most people would say that intentionally drowning mice, or any animal, is cruel and awful.
Either you have a hell of a good sense of smell, and are somehow bothered by 40 drops of peppermint mixed into a 36 oz bottle of water - sprayed in the engine bay - or my sense of smell is gone, because I can't smell it at all.
I guess I'm an outlier, because I think people who trap wild animals and leave them to starve to death, or freeze to death, are doing something awful too.
Corn Meal + Plaster of Paris and a little sugar. There are a lot of recipes on the internet for this as it's an "old-school" concoction.
Keep pets, children and anyone claiming to be on a diet away from it.
It is
non-toxic
but has
a
deleterious effect on the gastronomical tract
and
induces the last case of indigestion/constipation the mouse will ever have. It's akin to eating concrete. Access to water speeds the process.
The very short
gestational period of mice means you'll never get them all but this is one more solution.
Peppermint oil appears to work well and leaves your car minty fresh. I use it in the frunk and engine compartment. The bucket/roller traps definitely work, but are not an option for us in the frozen parts of the country. I have an electric noise generator that's supposed to keep rodents away, too, but it doesn't actually work on chipmunks, so I doubt it works on the mice and is a waste of money. standard mousetraps around my wheels baited with peanutbutter is my other defense.
