The water pump/thermostat can be changed easily without removing the engine or tranny, so if you want to just get that done so you're back on the road you won't be saving money doing everything at once.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Unfortunately, right now my time is more valuable than my money so I'm forced to pay someone else to do my service. I've asked a local shop to replace my leaking water pump, and to do the AOS, IMS, and IMS at the same time. It'd be the IMS solution from LN engineering. They want $4,100 all told, and tell me that based on feel I may be in the market for a new clutch as well, which would be an additional $600. I'd planned to put $2,000 or so into preventative maintenance for this car, but this is a good bit more than that obviously. Are these prices reasonable?

POST 2Original post

Those prices look about in-line with what I'd expect a shop to charge. The water pump/thermostat can be changed easily without removing the engine or tranny, so if you want to just get that done so you're back on the road you won't be saving money doing everything at once. If you are removing the transmission to do the RMS and IMS, you might as well do a clutch while you're in there unless the car has really low mileage. The only issues I see on that are the following: - A thermostat replacement takes about 20 minutes if the water pump is already out, not 1.3. - If you replace the AOS when the transmission is out, it's a thirty minute job, not 4.7.

POST 3Original post

Why are they billing 3.5 hours for the water pump if the engine is coming out? Price seems decent when I had similar work done they just billed me for parts for the AOS, clutch/flywheel and it was around $4200.

POST 4Original post

I see $150/hr minimum around Chicagoland, so those prices would seem normal to me.

POST 6Original post

Crazy cheap. This is an engine out, split case repair. How does $4k even cover the labor? EDIT: Just looked at the parts list and saw this is IMSB only, not IMS. I still think the number is a bit high but reasonable.

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 16181505

That was the first thing that came to mind. If you can get all of that work done AND it's the Solution , you might want to get over there real soon and have it done. Your quote is not for the Solution . I also agree with my brother, Capt. Obvious - there's a little padding in that labor. Still not a bad deal, if the work is good . Maybe you can let them know about the "while you're already in there" factor when it comes to labor fees. Maybe they'll take a little of the fat out. Then again, they may spit in the IMSB after installing it...

POST 8Original post

I just pulled up my invoice, $1525.55 for IMS, seals, oil, coolant, and labor.

POST 9Original post

That price is NOT for the IMS Solution, too low.....it would only be for the IMS Retrofit bearing (this bearing also has a limited lifetime service interval). If you want the IMS Solution, you aren't getting it in this quote.

POST 10Original post

When I bought my car the shop that did the ims had on the invoice "IMS solution" Once i got back I figured out they just listed it wrong. That's a huge difference in money and confidence, especially with pre-qualification. Real bummer.

POST 11Original post

I got quoted $6,000 for the job, though mine is a Tiptronic. You manual guys have all the luck.

POST 12Original post

You will have an additional list of costs added to this estimate IMO. Oil change, filter, coolant, etc. Sure makes me appreciate that I can do most of my own work!

POST 13Original post

Got to love the Shop Supplies charge. Just a little more squeeze to the waled to make sure there is nothing left in it. And then the 10% discount to make you think you are getting a deal. Slimy business practice. I guarantee you this will cost significantly more at the end.

POST 14Original post

Even with just basic mechanical skills you can do the waterpump and t stat yourself and save a ton! That is not the IMS solution!! I advise getting a certified IMS shop to do the work Read up here there is also a list of certified shops on this site http://theimssolution.com/

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What makes you think that this is not the IMS solution? Their desc is funky but the part number maps to the correct part and I discussed it with them on the phone and felt they were describing the real deal.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 16184696

So you have confirmed that the spin-on filter housing and oil feed line are part of this installation? The part price is close to the typical price for the solution, but the labor may be a little light. The engine needs to be modified to provide clearance for the oil feed line. Have you confirmed this is in the labor? The part number listed in the quote more closely matches this: http://www.autoatlanta.com/results.p...=911%201998-05 The Solution has a different suffix and would likely be described as the "solution" in the quote: https://www.carid.com/ln-engineering...CABEgLJMPD_BwE Oooops - that's the dual row solution. ^ Finally, is the shop planning to go through the pre-qualification procedure that LN recommends? It would be a good idea to check. We hope for your sake this is the Solution, but most of us are skeptical. And if it is, the price is good.

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 16181505

Actually, that is the IMS Solution for single row cars. If you notice, the part number (106-08.20) is listed in the invoice.

POST 18Original post

Just the IMSS install alone is about $4K from what I've seen here on the forum, no?

POST 19Original post

Well i have to pay $5500 cdn, so that seems on par.

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 16185322

Does that include the thermostat, waterpump and AOS?

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 16185432

Yep, It's on the invoice on the right side.

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 16185436

The question was directed at Jim - as he indicated he was quoted 5500 Loonies. Wanted to see if he was also getting the same parts replaced as the OP. And I have to admit, I don't recall what he stated in his thread on a similar subject...

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 16185188

That would be a good thing, if true. And searching on that number does bring up the Solution. The Auto Atlanta link that I posted, could be interpreted as a suffix of .2 (not .20). It would still be good for us armchair mechanics to hear from the OP, beyond doubt, that this is indeed the Solution. He seems to give that impression - but we, the ever skeptical, like proof.

POST 24Original post

Get your clutch done...My clutch was $250 on top of 2100 for IMS.

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 16185499

I believe the quote lists inspection of the clutch. Certainly no reason to spend the money unless it's warranted.

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 16185432

For me? No. Just the preinspection, RMS and The Solution.

POST 27Original post

I just replaced my water pump and belt for $785.01. A bit more than your quote, but ok for my market.

POST 28 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just to follow up, I asked if they could adjust the maintenance hours a little bit, i.e. if AOS or pump was easier once transmission was out. Final cost came to $3,600, which I am pretty pleased with. They even put the car on a lift for me when I came to pick it up - it is definitely the LN engineering IMS solution. I'm very pleased with the work so far. At some point I'll need brakes and eventually plugs and coils, but I'm hoping to tackle at least some of that on my own.
