I replaced the ASCO with the stock LUK DMF and all the strange transmission noises disappeared.

Also probably change the rear main seal and check the ims while in there?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
22 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Got my 911 a few weeks ago. Came from California. 70k Im it. 6 speed. Clutch is due to be replaced. I saw everyone recommending the Sachs clutch. Found it at a decent price on eBay. Ive been thinking about putting in a lightweight flywheel also. Any recommendations on a brand or what I should be looking for?
Don't do it - harmonic balancing etc is compromised...
Plenty of reading you can do on the topic - I had one, great performance but you put your engine at risk IMO
60K on my LWFW. Love it! Chatters like crazy but you get used to it. Best thing is my wife wont drive my car because of it. Not the best on the engine I am sure from the searching I have done but the quick revs and ease of rev matching is awesome. Damn its probably going to explode now that I have said something positive about it🤘 Better take my truck to work today.
I found a great deal on the sachs clutch. Gotta check for the flywheel now. Does the flywheels need replaced with the clutch? Or just recommended. Also probably change the rear main seal and check the ims while in there? Anything else?

Lol Don't worry about it. On this forum, there are quite a few people who think anything other than stock is "ruining" the car.
Just thinking about the comment about a lightweight flywheel ruining a car sounds so silly, but that's what we have here. Lol!!!!
Yes RUINED. Nothing to do with modifying, I'm all for it, do it to all my cars. I've put the wrong clutch in my DD too and regret it but that is a different car/story. You've installed a clutch that makes the car shake when the clutch is engaging. That's a step back in my books. Also makes the car harder to drive since the flywheel doesn't have the mass to easily keep the engine momentum up and on top of this, the RPMs drop faster than designed and that will put and extra strain on the synchros too. What you've done is not an improvement. I bet if you knew that going in, your decision would have been different but now that you are stuck with it, you have to justify it so save face.
I stand by my statement and would do it again given the opportunity based on my cars condition and my expectations for driving experience. But this just my opinion. I dont find it hard to drive at all but again thats my opinion. Would I recommend it? Thats a different story. Im sure not everyone would not be in the same camp. Its loud. Theres additional interior noise and there are inherent risks. No longer a date car. Its a fun car. I bought an average condition car with the only intention of driving the crap out of it, which I do. Now, that being said if I had spent good money on a high end rebuild I would listen to what they would recommend which I know would be a dual mass. For that dough Id probably start looking at other platforms
A clutch plate without spring is the standard one to use with the stock dual-mass flywheel. If you use a single-mass lightweight flywheel, I think you should use a clutch plate with springs to absorb some of the vibration.
I had a ASCO flywheel (very well made, almost a work of art) with a clutch plate without spring for 13K miles. I hated it for all the clattering noise at idle, and the broken bearing sound of low gears when off throttle. But flipping the
throttle was fun since the engine seemed much more responsive. I replaced the ASCO with the stock LUK DMF and all the strange transmission noises disappeared.
BTW, the ASCO plus all the flywheel bolts together weighed 13lbs. The LUK DMF-24 without the bigger flywheel bolts weighed 29lbs. So there is a big difference with the rotating mass.
I'm having some repairs done on my engine right now. While the engine is out, we're addressing several other items. Clutch being one of them. Now, since I enjoying modifying all of my vehicles to some degree...I thought a lightweight flywheel was a sure thing...Well, the shop said...NO!!! They will not install a lightweight flywheel in the M96/97 (for the reasons listed above in previous posts). Period. If I chose to do that, I would have to take my car to a different shop or install it myself. I accepted that after doing some reading...and decided to throw in a stock clutch/flywheel and spend some cash on Cargraphic Headers!
Honestly, I thought a lightweight flywheel would be an awesome addition in this car. However, I was told differently and researched confirmed it.
I wish you luck with it. I'd love to drive your car to experience it. And, in the end, it's your car and your money.
Mike
I think Im gonna pass on the lightweight flywheel. I just found a leaking water pump. So I have to take care of that first. Ill probably just replace the clutch with a factory one. Im not trying to change the drivability of this car. Ive ruined too many cars in the past doing that lol
