Suggestion

After test aiming the beam pattern, I carefully added some epoxy around the front part of the projector at the mounting flange, waited a day or two for off-gassing, and then re-sealed the lenses with their lense adhesive - using a heat gun on low as I moved around to help with the seal.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a '99 996 halogen headlights, and I want to improve the light projection/brightness. The replacement OEM Litronic/Xenon headlight units are too expensive at ~$2k for the pair. Is s there a DIY solution, perhaps using a LED bulb in my existing halogen headlight? If so, any suggestions? Thanks.

POST 2Original post

You can do an HID retrofit. Kits are like 100-200$ and should come with ballasts. Its direct plug and play just be sure to aim headlights appropriately so you dont dazzle other drivers.

POST 3Original post

To improve light projection and brightness do the following: 1. Make sure your lights are correctly aimed. Spend the time to learn how to do this and make the necessary adjustments. 2. Get new bulbs. Your bulbs are probably tired and dim. There are many bulbs on the market, try a few out and see which one works best for you. No need to spend money on conversion kits, your lights can be improved with a little bit of effort.

POST 4Original post

The problem with the H7 LED headlight bulbs is the usually have a large heat sink on back of the bulb, so it doesn't fit in the headlight housing....and you might have to cut some holes to accommodate them and for ventilation. I put in some new H7 bulbs awhile back and I'm pretty pleased with the light output. I did put in some LED bulbs for the parking lights (not fog) and it looks pretty cool when just those are on. Some examples of H7 LED headlight bulbs https://www.superbrightleds.com/cat/...-55W,197,8926:

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks. 1) I might try to buy newer or better Halogen H7 bulbs for one last try. 2) I am going to skip the HID's as I tried it before, but was concerned that the ballasts ran too hot and would melt the plastic housings for which I planted to mount it. 3) I will try the LED. Do you know whether the LED bulbs with the heat sink ribbon, fits better than the LED bulbs with the compact heat sink?

POST 6Original post

I did a projector retrofit. About $200 all in, sourcing everything from TRS. Picked up a set of toasted factory halogens. After After Lights have been tuned a little since this pic, but very sharp and defined cutoff and pattern. One of my most favorite mods I've done. Totally best bang for the $

POST 7Original post

RT_955TT_KY...cab you provide some more context on what you actually did...I am very interested.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am also interested. It is my understanding that its a pretty complex process which involves baking the headlight unit in an oven, in order to remove and to reinstall the plastic lens cover.

POST 10Original post

I'll put together a basic build post in the next day or two. it did involve an oven, and some heat but nothing too difficult

RT_955 How is the retrofit working? I am interested in doing the same project. How do the projectors mount into the housing? CAn you recall what you purchased from TRS to do this? THX

POST 12Original post

+1 on that. Sounds a lot cheaper than sending them out to someone for the $900 I was quoted.

POST 13Original post

Over a year later and still working great. I used the stock halogen baskets - had to grind down flat the rear where the stock halogen bulb mounted to allow for the mounting nut of the Morimoto Mini H1 7.0 projector. Also had to do some minor grinding down of the horizontal divider inside the basket to allow the projector to mount all the way back. I used the projector shrouds from the God awful aftermarket LED headlights that came on my car. I believe that I used the above mentioned Morimoto projectors, and their basic Morimoto bulbs and 35w ballasts. After test aiming the beam pattern, I carefully added some epoxy around the front part of the projector at the mounting flange, waited a day or two for off-gassing, and then re-sealed the lenses with their lense adhesive - using a heat gun on low as I moved around to help with the seal.

Are you using High and Low beam through the projector now or just the Low? Looks very sharp.

POST 15Original post

The projector provides both low and high beam via the mechanical shutter, and the original halogen high beam also illuminates on "high"
