I know the IMS issue is a touchy subject but I am surprised BaT even lets cars on there without the potential issues addressed since they only let so many of one car on at a time.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm thinking of bidding on a '99 C2 on BaT. The auction ends tomorrow. How does one go about getting a PPI done on a vehicle that is being auctioned on BaT? Here's the link to the car. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...-carrera-4-13/ Are you just on your own to believe what is said about the car from the site, or is there a period of time after the auction, if you win, to have it checked out by an Indy shop, and then back out of the deal? Don't want to bid on something and then "win" only to find out the car isn't what was claimed. Also, I've heard that the orange turn signal cars have a double rowed IMS. Is this true? Thanks, Gary

POST 2Original post

There is no cooling off period. If you win, you're expected to go through, even if your PPI (in this case, post -purchase inspection) turns up something. If you pull out, you will not get your BAT fee back. Best to ask a lot of questions early and if you need a PPI to feel comfortable bidding, you should arrange it ASAP once the listing starts. Oh, and to arrange such a thing, you need to contact the seller directly via the listing. PM me if you want more info on the process.

POST 3Original post

I wouldn't bid unless you intend to buy with that being said its probably too late to get a PPI on that one before the auction ends. I know the IMS issue is a touchy subject but I am surprised BaT even lets cars on there without the potential issues addressed since they only let so many of one car on at a time.

POST 4Original post

You can't do inspections post auction. Thats ridiculous. Also any shop worth taking a Porsche is not going to just let you show up with no notice. The seller will not accommodate a last second final day inspection either. Its just not possible and not happening for a ton of reasons. Bid what you feel comfortable with.

Hey Gary, yes - that will have the double row and I'd recommend replacement with the clutch. You'd only be looking at an extra $700 in parts for the LN Engineering ceramic replacement. I'm having a Solution installed later this year so I'll never think about it again. I looked at this one and would be bidding if I didn't pick up the 2/98 build that I purchased last year. In talking to the fellas at Flat 6 Innovations, they are big fans of the early '98 builds from a materials and build quality perspective, and I've got to say, they are light and so deliciously analog that I smile every time I drive. I bought mine from a dealer in another state and had it shipped, got a great deal and haven't looked back. But there was 18 years of maintenance records from the local Porsche dealer from the seller and I spoke with the service tech that did the work before I pulled the trigger. If you're serious on this one, do some research if possible and throw some sharp elbows to land this beauty!

POST 6Original post

Auction cars are as-is, where-is. Any due diligence you might want to do needs to be done prior to bidding. At least with BAT cars you might have the opportunity to test drive or PPI if you plan for it during the seven day auction and are willing to fly out and/or arrange a local shop to inspect. With most collector car auctions, you'd be lucky to even hear the car start. Once the hammer falls, if your high bidder and any reserve was met, it's yours!

POST 7Original post

Hi Gary, As a recent 3/98 build date '99 996 buyer myself last Fall, here are my unsolicited thoughts on the auction since it sounds like you're new to the 996. Its low miles, so wear components are very young, but corrosion components are still 21 years old. In short, with an auction item such as this, with no service records, and without an inspection, I would budget to have common wear and corrosion items replaced immediately after purchase. As an example, looking at the color of the coolant expansion tank in the engine bay (very yellow) I would guess it to be original. These tanks get brittle over time and, under pressure, often leak. Mine did. So count on having that replaced. While you're at it, most of the rubber coolant hoses will probably be in similar condition. It would be surprising to me if the previous owners undertook the hose jobs but left the original tank in place. I'd add to the list the IMS bearing, the coolant pump, the plugs and coils, and the air oil separator. You can do all these items together with one engine drop. If this is within your budget/doesn't scare you off, then GLWTA! I love my '99 996 and have no regrets. Great driving experience.

POST 8Original post

Seller claims to be a Porsche shop, yet refers to the wheels as "lobster claws." That's a red flag right away, I'd say. That said, the car looks clean, but I'd skip it.

POST 9Original post

It would be nice to have the maintenance records of this low mileage example, but they aren't included.

POST 10Original post

That is how these wheels are commonly referred to. What is the red flag?

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 15665386

They're "Lobster Forks" not claws.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 15665454

Well, they look like lobster forks , but colloquially they go by lobster claws . Go figure.

POST 13Original post

Bingo. Car looks decent IMO. Would be better w records, but seems pretty honest. 99s are great! Dual row, cable throttle, LSD... I miss mine I'd be interested if the options tag was still on the inside frunk.

POST 14Original post

I've previously tried to get a PPI done on a BAT listed C4S where the seller lived quite far away from me, far enough that I could not see the car in person. I found it was really difficult to get a PPI done since the seller was inundated with requests for them at different shops across the city. He quickly tired of this and eventually, the car was sold to someone without a PPI. If I ever sell a car on BAT, I'll get a PPI done at a reputable local specialist and publish the results - if one is confident in the condition of the car this approach should maximize the selling price.

POST 15Original post

I can tell you right away that you will need a new coolant tank if you end up buying the car.. Seems like an early 99 (more desirable)

POST 16Original post

It sure looks nice. It will be a good deal and then need some updating TLC (overflow tank, IMS, etc....), but that's the fun part!!!!! Perfect looking body and interior. Hope it works out for you. At least you know that it wasn't owned by some 18 year old racer wannabe.

POST 17Original post

I feel like smarter sellers get an independent PPI to post in the pictures in the ad. I suppose there could be some funny business but it's cheap insurance for the seller since I believe the buyer pays most of the fees on BaT.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 15664498

Seriously? You want an auction site to require every potential issue on a used/collector car addressed before they list it?

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 15668751

I should have worded it differently. This specific car, since apparently, they are inundated with 996 models and only list a few at a time. So I am surprised they do not list the ones that are well sorted. That is not to say this one isn't, there just is not much proof it is. They are the ones that are picky and making money off their sales, not me. I am sure they have better metrics than me on what cars sell for what. It is just the first question in every one of the 996 sales ads in the comments.

POST 20Original post

Wow $25K, sorry G! If you want a 16K mile 99 in Arena red over tan let me know.

POST 21Original post

+$27k OTD is pretty strong money for a basic silver/black C2. Yes, has lower-ish miles, yes, has TC and LSD which are nice options. But I don't see anything there that would make me pony up an extra $7-8k over what the rest of the market is showing. Not without the IMSB done, and no PPI. Oh well, I'm not a bidder so I guess it's good for the rest of the market. (unless one is on the buying end) edit: Save $10k, come to warm(er) TX: https://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/ct...826505673.html This car is in my neighborhood. No affiliation.

Thanks Doc... wasn't looking for an AT. This does look nice though. Thanks for looking at for me. In hindsight the end of that auction got a little too rich for my blood, and hope that the new owner gets great use out of it. I got swept up in the moment too.

I have wondered about the conversion from Tiptronic(Auto) to Manual trans. Is this do able? In some ways the engine of a Tip has been protected from over-revs as opposed to a stick. Think of it as preserved in bubble rap from prior owners just for you.....

It's not worth the effort...Just buy what you want, 996 MT are everywhere!

POST 25Original post

This is BaT tax, a lot of stuff on there goes for higher prices. Plenty of good cars out there for a few grand less.
