Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a few questions regarding the IMS upgrades
I just acquired this car recently and want to have the IMS "upgraded"...
Which IMS is the "recommended", and what have you paid to have this done.

Welcome to the "Madness"!
Tell us about your car and post some pics, enjoy!
Maybe
@lnengineering
and
@Flat6 Innovations
should team up and do a "Sticky Thread IMS" for Audible, for those who don't want to read!
(Hey, sorry
@MY03911
it just had to be said!)
OP wants to upgrade the InterMediate SHAFT? Well - ok. I don't know of any vendors who offer an "upgraded" IMS. Finally, whom are you quoting?
May I suggest doing at least 2-5 minutes of personal investigation on your new car?
"Recommended" IMSB upgrade depends upon who you ask.
I recommend The IMS Solution.
http://theimssolution.com/
I've never heard anyone recommend any reason to
NOT
install The IMS Solution, except for price.
It is
THE
most expensive route, but it
FOREVER
eliminates the issue.
This question has been beaten to death on the forums (hence some of the earlier replies). The simple answer, get the IMS Solution and then enjoy your car. You can find a list of qualified installers on either the LN Engineering site or Flat 6 Innovations. Find one near you, call them up, and get a quote. I believe you can expect to pay 3-5k for it when its all said and done. They will do a pre-install inspection and then, if your car passes, install the bearing. Moving forward you won't have to worry about IMS bearing failure and you will also have a spin on oil filter adapter.
Cheers and happy motoring!

Not really true. FSI and LN both make minor improvements to the shaft itself and thoroughly check them. Its anazing the amount of information you can learn from them in 4 days of class time. If I ever have a shaft out, it will go to LN to be checked and improved.
But this topic is probably about the bearing.....
Hey, we're making progress. I didn't know that anyone made upgraded shafts. Good news. Tell us more. Are the upgraded shafts cast, or forged? Are the sprockets bolted on, or are they machined? What kind of cost are well looking at for the upgraded shaft asm?
thx,
They make some pretty smart upgrades to the factory shaft if it is a good, straight and true shaft. The problem is the gears are pressed onto the shaft and can slip causing cams to be out of time. They do it differently, but both will make it so the gears can not slip any longer. That's the gist of it. No one makes a replacement shaft.
No it didn't. You could've just posted the sticky thread link and moved on with your day. This thread was moved it's way down and the OP would've gotten his answer.
If these kinds of threads bother you guys so much, you should probably question how much time you are spending on this forum.
The ones I saw looked like they would cause an out of balance issue.
The weld covered about 1/4 of the diameter of the shaft.
Out of balance IMS might not be too good of an idea.
Flat 6 pins them. To do that, the IMS has to be removed from the case, which is typically done during a complete rebuild. It doesn't just slide out.
I had to laugh at some of the responses. As they would say in Zoolander... Bore scoring, so hot right now.
When I saw that the shaft had been removed from the engine, welded, put back into service, and then the engine was torn down again and offered for sale, I wondered about the rebuild quality.
They had two identical engines for sale, and I passed on both of them.
Boy oh boy, someone is grumpy. Another member already posted that he should read the sticky thread. I just made a joke about turning the thread into a an audiobook for those who don't like to read. And I apologized for the tongue in cheek joke. (and by the way, your response to me took up even more space and wasn't on topic either. A PM could have sufficed.)
It IS about the people!
I got lucky by buying a 996 that had the IMS Solution put in. I was looking at another similar model that did NOT have the IMS bearing addressed, and I was going to budget for the IMS Solution.
Ooops. Did I forget this...
I was going to post Sgt Hulka's famous line, after
Francis
got a little tight. Maybe next time...
Ah the hell with next time.
