Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Why is it so difficult to obtain the provenance of my 2004 Carrera Cab? When purchased in 2016, it came with a clear Carfax but little else. I believe that I'm the second owner of this beautiful, good-running California 996 since the Carfax lists the history of its registration and dealer servicing. I contacted my local Porsche dealer and the servicing dealerships in California, but none of them would help me. I understand that there may be personal info on the service records, but that could be redacted as we know this is an issue with today's privacy concerns. I also emailed PCA about this and they simply referred me back to the dealers, so that was very disappointing as well. I'm sure I'm not the only Porsche owner who would like to know a solution to obtaining their vehicle's provenance, so how do you suggest this process can be improved? /X3

POST 2Original post

Maybe Porschetech can chime in, but I just bought my C2 Cab from a dealer in Cleveland. They could print off the service record from their dealership only (the previous 8 years). But they could/would not give me anything before that (the original 8 years). Not sure why, I was just happy for the service records that I got...

POST 3Original post

"Provenance" ? AFAIK - It's only considered "provenance", if it's an "important" car for some reason - i.e. Racing history, celebrity ownership, Porsche family or Factory ownership, Prototype etc... The "provenance" of a standard production car (not saying yours isn't special in some way) sold to "Joe average American" doesn't really exist. Call it what you like, but unless you can prove one of the things above ^^^ "history" is probably more applicable...

OK, history. /X3

POST 5Original post

I believe that each dealer has access to a central database of service records, and can access them for you. Perhaps you need to bring your car in for a service at a local dealership and while there (paying for service) they’ll be more inclined to help. I was able to source service records of my car from the dealer in Richmond, Va (EuroClassics) and printed out those records for me. Service performed at independent repair shops will not be reflected on those records unless the prior owner kept records that accompanied the car.

POST 6Original post

Become a PCA member and a member of your local PCA Chapter. Go make friends at Cars and Coffee. Go to a dealership in person and make friends with the dealership manager. Talk about Porsche, PCA, your local chapter events and your car. You're doing it this way because every manager knows the greatest marketing tool is word of mouth. Ask the dealership manager if he/she could do you a huge favor and look up the service history. Most of them will do it as a favor if you ask nicely and in person.

In this case, all I can say is - Good luck. As mentioned above, your best bets are going to be personal relationships with dealers, PCA officers etc.

POST 8Original post

As far as my experience goes dealers can only see warranty work that was done on the car if done at other Porsche dealerships. They cannot see any other work done at other dealerships.

There is no Porsche central database for service records - recalls and TSB's yes but not for service records. Each dealer has their own records. Some dealers are more enlightened than others and will print out history for you with prior owner info redacted.

Like some have mentioned, all Porsche Dealerships have access to Warranty repair history, Recall history, Service Action history, that is paid for by Porsche. Regular maintenance history paid for by the customer is only kept at each Dealership for service done at that Dealership. Previous owner identity is kept confidential, for privacy reasons and other like ,as most owners don't want to be bothered about a car they used to have. while others love to talk about the one they used to have and will talk all day long about it.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
