Mine had 47K miles on the body and 35K miles on a new dealer replaced engine.

I know enough has already been said but I replaced my IMS as a preventative measure.

Slakker, AOS has been changed by the Garage selling it.

I knocked them down a bit and gave them some "things to fix" which cost them another $500 CAD (battery and coolant check).

Oh well, its paid for and has (mostly) working lights, just one slightly pathetic front fog light, I'll clean the connections when the car arrives home.

I haven't seen a single car with lambo doors, a second alternator, a custom CF enclosure the size of the entire back seat area, underglow that changes color and pace to the music.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello Rennlist,
I'm a long time lurker and soon to be first time Porsche owner with a dark green 1999 996.
I have paid the deposit and will be driving for 5 hours to go and pay for the car on Friday.
Its a Dark Green Carrera 2 with a tan interior.
Here is the only half decent picture I have of it.
I will post more pictures when I get the car and look forward to getting your thoughts and comments.
Cheers
Chris
Thanks Rolex 11. Headlights for sure, the DRL's have burnt the lenses (its in the great white north known as Canada) so it's going to fail a safety and I need to sort out a few other niggles (fuel filler cap, mashed air vent and cruise not working). But it will be my money pit.
What's the opinion on lights? I think I like the orange indicators (turn signals?) on the front.
Love the car and the color. Welcome to the club!
I think the IMS gets more publicity because it would fail on low mileage cars but the AOS seems to be the biggest enemy in this stage of their life.

Of course I was joking, since only the front is pictured.....but I stand by my prediction....
Honestly damn, Maybe I will look for another car.
Barn 996, I've only test driven it. Firstly like a loony then I went back to review some repairs so more like a granny.
Its not easy buying a car 5 hours away from home, but I hope its worth it.
PeterSa9 yeah, it looks similar, I will check colour codes once I get it back.
Triple Black, thanks I'm already planning a virtual track day in my mind. Mosport is not too far from where I live............ new brakes, new tyres, big explosion..............
Slakker, AOS has been changed by the Garage selling it. They put $4k CAD into it which include head work and the AOS, only reason I'm contemplating the car as limited service info.
its sitting at just under 130K. So will look into clutch, IMS RMS etc so I have some peace of mind. But first priority is pay for it, safety it and drive the wheels off...
Oh and for the record I'm a Brit living in Canada so I may use some odd words. Works for Magnus Walker and those guys from Singer...... hmmmmmmmm maybe i should paint my car a horrid colour.
You're welcome. I just picked up my first Porsche 2500 miles away, so as long as you have some history and see records of the repairs and feel it is sound - go for it.
Yeah, you have so much more choice in the US and with the currency so far out of whack (US to CAD), I couldn't really look at US cars. Good stuff is worth the travelling. You went to California?
Im in Canada and picked up my 996 5 hrs away in Ottawa.. I was a little nervous about the daytrip but mostly because I expected some sort of issues but it all went smooth and the drive home was glorious.
Enjoy the new car!
Hi Zak996, I'm in the GTA too, I have made the supposedly huge mistake of buying in Quebec, but unlike you I'm not going to drive car home as its not an "Ontario car" (was originally purchased in Ottawa) and I think it needs headlights.
The thought of driving along the 401 with a car capable of 175mph and a heavy right foot and poor self control is just too much. So I have a guy shipping it for $450.
Cheers
Chris
Mine seems good on that front and they just did AOS so new fluids. Just need to make it legal to drive, get some number plates and go have fun (assuming I don't find out its actually 5 996's welded together when it goes though the safety).......
Hopefully...............................................................
I knocked them down a bit and gave them some "things to fix" which cost them another $500 CAD (battery and coolant check). So as long as it does not detonate I'm happy.
At under $13K US it's actually quite a bargain even with works yet to be done. I would advise against immediately sinking too much money into it though; all jokes about bankruptcy aside, nothing spoils a Porsche ownership experience faster than too much/little investment in maintenance. Prioritize quality of life refurbishment over go-fast track mods if you want a "long term relationship" with your 996.
(Go-fast mod addiction is real though; you can see plenty of threads on RL attesting as much.)
Nice find - hope you enjoy the car.
As far as "mod addiction" - this place is mild. The items are all pricey, but I haven't seen many "mod addicted" 996ers. I haven't seen a single car with lambo doors, a second alternator, a custom CF enclosure the size of the entire back seat area, underglow that changes color and pace to the music.
Maybe White Out...he counts. And Fierofly. And the dude who bought the aluminum spatulas.
I kind of did that already. I was involved in Stage Rallying back home, so have had the heavily modded caged out cars. Great fun, but terrible other than on a racetrack/rally stage. I even got the Nurburgring thing out of my system. Clearly I'm colour blind though.
I appear to like green things.
Congratulations and what a beautiful car. Enjoyment is in your future.
I also picked up my first one a few months ago and it is a 99 996 C4 Cab.
Mine had 47K miles on the body and 35K miles on a new dealer replaced engine. I know enough has already been said but I replaced my IMS as a preventative measure. Sure enough it was loose and on its way to failure.
I am still working through a few little niggles but just love the car.
Marc
Thanks Marc. looking forward to getting it home, working out if I need new headlights and then driving it.
I'm going to get pricing for IMSB, clutch and cam chain tensioners as a preventative measure. Worth it for the peace of mind. Especially with the prices of second hand engines these days.
The lenses are burnt on the inside from running DRL's in a couple of locations. The passenger side has burnt right through at one point so I suspect it will fail safety. Drivers is not so bad.
Not yellowed out on the plastic lens in front. I will take pictures when I get the car.
Yes and your not going to believe what I bought off there today. Ok, you probably will. Need to finish the transaction tomorrow before I share details but I'll give you two hints. It wasn't from the "parts" section and I get to stay in this forum.
Oh well, its paid for and has (mostly) working lights, just one slightly pathetic front fog light, I'll clean the connections when the car arrives home.
Peter SA9 the colour code is L22E Forest Green, so not quite twins, but I do have a rear wash wipe just like yours.

In case you didn't catch my post in the other thread. It was a done deal, and then it wasn't. It would have been a blast though.
Car arrived last night, has temporary plates and just been for emission testing (more on that later). Here are a few questions:
1) Electrics seem to be intermittent? Wipers and front headlights sometimes they come on other times not. They work again if you switch ignition on and off. Is this normal?
2) Starter, this is really lazy, couple of turns and it starts up,is this normal or is more money needed? Maybe permanently engaged?
3) I think it needs engine mounts!!
4) Needs headlights for safety. Argghhhh.
Anyhow I took car to a local Mr Lube for Emission testing and it was great to make their night, but they did look for the engine in the front.
Sounds like you need a new ignition switch to address the electrical issue. Documented ad nauseam here and elsewhere. CHeap fix.
The paint looks to be in much better shape than the first picture indicated. Nice!
The starter is another common weak point. If you find that it is harder to start when hot, that's a second indication that your starter needs replacing. You can find them for about a hundred bucks on Amazon if you aren't keen to spend $800 at the Porsche parts counter. I find that my car is turning over about twice as fast with the new starter - I hadn't realized just how poorly the original was functioning.
The DRL issue sucks - you must purchase new lights to be legal in Canada because your original lights were ruined by a mandatory safety feature for Canadian cars. That seems f----d.
One hint if you plan to do your own work - buy a larger oil drain pan. I never needed a pan that could hold approx. 9 quarts before I bought my first Porsche...
I'd try a new battery first. These cars devour batteries like none other. The battery is the cheapest fix and often the root cause of many electrical gremlins which multiply when the charge is low. Can get your alternator tested as well to be sure.
The battery won't be the cause of the accessories working or not after fussing with the ignition. I'm willing to put up an entire dollar (US!) that it's the ignition switch.
Garage fitted a new one already. Paint is pretty good, blackberry camera's on the other hand total ****e.
Yes sucks regarding the DRL but I knew that one going in to the purchase.
Its starting fine just verrrryyyyyyy sllllooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwww (etc). Alternator is showing 14V on cluster. So ignition switch..... engine mounts......New vent......new (to me) lights.......... Ahhh yess and there is a relay that keeps buzzing wonder what thats supposed to work.
Oh yeah oil, time to reminisce, there was a 911 that somehow damaged itself when I was at the Nurburgring, they shut the road down because he left a 10km long slick.......... Ohh how we cursed. Went for a weekend and only managed 5 laps in my car due to crashes, barrier damage and this guy.
I think the oem starters are pretty weak. My 2003 seems to be a little slower to turn over than most other cars I've driven, but battery tested as good.
It's called practicing several laps in Gran Turismo with a car with stiff suspension so you know where the grip falls off on the bumpy areas and off camber turns. However this will get you partially there though as nothing can replace the real thing.
I just wished I went when Sabine was driving the M5 taxi. That would've been fun.
I would let Sabine make me barf into my helmet all day long.
If I ever get the chance to drive Brands Hatch, I'm pretty sure I'll nail that one - I probably did a thousand laps in Race 07. Crappy visuals, crappy AI, but the driving was awesome.
Xbox was surprisingly accurate. The ring taxi came past me like it was on fire, M5 4 up and I stood no chance Sabine was not driving that day (this was 2007 so I think she was still around). I got a few laps in with guys over there too. One in a Boxster that was pretty quick, the other was a guy in an M3, pressed sport button got all excited then he drove like a granny. I think he sensed my disappointment.
Managed a 9.30 bridge to gantry.
We had a flipped M3 onto the barriers, a guy on a motor bike knock his feet off (according to my mate who saw it) and the 10km oil slick 911. Spent lots of time in the parking lot chatting to people.
You should like the new Top Gear then?
Saw their trailer on you tube and it looked hilarious. Really not sure about the TG team. Monkey Harris is good, but Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc ffs..........
So, what's up with the ring? They let any old Joe Schmoe drive it in any vehicle with no safety equipment?
I checked out some of the You Tube vids. There are cars and motorcylces on the track at the same time, even a guy in a go-cart, a guy in a motorhome, and a guy driving a bus, people with no helmets, people walking out onto the track while it's hot, and all manners of idiocy.
Technically its a toll road so they don't need so many marshalls etc (or at least that was how it was run when I went). Bottom line is anything can drive on there. I passed a coach full of grannies and a guy in a 5 tonne truck.
Bikes are the best, they all think they are "insert world champion I'm going for Barry Sheen", quickish on the straights, super wide and slow in the corners. You daren't get too close for fear of hitting them.
But still brilliant. Every car guy should go there at least once.
Congrats! I bought a 2002 C4S last week, 500 km from home...it was an adventure. Flew out to Ottawa, looked at car, had a PPI done, drove it back to Toronto that afternoon. Vrrooooooooooooommmmm.
Awesome I'm slowly working through the issues with mine, Light on the way, just ordered an ignition switch and engine mounts. A C4S nice.
So 500km, Toronto?
Good thing is they introduced Brands Hatch circuit in GT6 so definitely no excuses if you drive it.
Fully agree. The new Top Gear is pretty bad IMO. Each host are on the polar opposite spectrum and do not have any synergy amongst themselves whatsoever IMO. I feel they've muted Chris Harris from being himself as he seems super reserved and quiet.
Damn that must've been a huge let down as the M3 is one of the more confidence inspiring cars to drive fast around there compared to some others.
What car did you do 9:30 in?
There's a famous work truck driver(Frank Habitz) that's making the rounds. It's hilarious. I wonder if he has all his tools in the back as well.
Nordschleife CRASH FRANK HABITZ Opel Vivaro - 08 05 2016 Touristenfahrten Nürburgring - YouTube
Sierra Cosworth the green thing below:
It was fast, got to follow a couple of 911's through and passed a few of the ring school cars (Alfa 75's at that time).
Its fun..........................
And so it begins.
Engine mounts and ignition switch ordered from Pelican, new headlights on their way on ebay. Technically one week in and I've spent around $700cad. Plus the tax!! Ahhhhhh the joy of old cars.
After watching a bunch of vids, I would never drive any vehicle I owned on there. Morons seem to flock to that drive, based on the vids, and it looks incredibly easy for one or more of them to smash into you. Looks totally insane. Surprised it is allowed, as Germany seems to be pretty restrictive on so many things. I wonder how many serious injuries or deaths a year happen there?
Edit: Found this on fatalities. I imagine serious injuries is orders of magnitude higher.
There seems to be a few owners that defer the maintenance of their 911s. My approach is going to be to keep on top of faults...good to see you are of a similar mind.
Its a giant wallet emptying time bomb if you leave it to fate. I want to be able to drive it and not have to worry when it will explode.
Although I did just get CAA coverage just in case...................
So I was looking for a simple solution for the front number plate (yes I know I've crossed the pond, but old habits die hard) and found a bracket in the local parts store I thought I would work. So I cut it down painted it black and then couldn't bring myself to drill the bumper to fix it.
Back to the drawing board. Off to Crappy Tire (Canadian Tire for the USA) and found this "Ultimate Fixing kit" which came with some plastic plugs that looked like they may fit in the holes already in the bumper.
Turns out they were slightly larger so I relieved the existing holes with a sharp knife, drilled the plate, fitted it with four of the rubber washers that came with the kit, bent plate slightly to follow contours of the car and bingo. I'm reasonably happy with it.
Also fitted a smart battery "charger" to trickle charge the battery.
Now I did have an odd moment with the frunk/trunk not opening. Car would not start, but maybe it was just because I had left it unlocked and door open for too long?
Ohh and I found a fix for an indicator (turn signal) light not working, simply thump the light assemble (front passenger) and its fixed. If it keeps going like this I'm calling it Christine.
Very ingenious. Gotta agree, it looks better than the stock mount.
Last fall when I had the front of mine resprayed I had them fill in the bumper holes and got one of the tow hook mounts.
I looked at those but with the costs mounting (no pun intended) spending a shed load of cash on a number plate thingy was not in the budget. Have to say yours does look splendiferous though.
This is my first post, new 911 owner, purchased a 1999 996 Cab. It had all of the maintenance records from new, LN IMS replacement, new clutch, fly wheel. RMS. Bought it without a PPI, will have that done tomorrow. Needed to move on it quick.
What headlights did did you get? I have just purchased a 996 in Canada and both headlights are burnt through the lens, looking for options.
