If it is kinda of a stinky smell after you just beat the crap out of the car, that is probably a little clutch and exhaust smell.

That stuff 'outgasses' fairly quickly I thought...like maybe in the first 6 months of use...I'm not certain on that but I would think 3 years of driving would clear out any cosmoline smell?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Recently after driving my 02 996, I have been noticing a burning smell coming from the engine. Not sure what it is but it has recently started to take place. Not the clutch, but I am curious as to what it could be... Any help would be great! Thanks!

POST 3Original post

cosmoline burning off.. nothing 2 worry about.

POST 4Original post

Could be coolant but that's a sweet smell. Ciao, Johannes E.

POST 5Original post

They all smell. You'll get used to it like your dog.

POST 6Original post

Does it smell like burning rubber/oil? Can you describe it a bit more.

POST 7Original post

Are you sure it isn't the aftermath of a clandestine visit to Taco Bell? Seriously though, I think that a lot of our cars smell funny. I think it may be due to the catalytic converter in some cases.

POST 8Original post

Does it smell like candy? If so that is radiator fluid burning. If it is kinda of a stinky smell after you just beat the crap out of the car, that is probably a little clutch and exhaust smell.

POST 10Original post

My car gets a smell after I run it hard. I am assuming its normal.

POST 11Original post

Same here. I can smell a rubbery odor after a hard run. I'm assuming a combination of brakes, warm tires with maybe some clutch thrown in. The smell of happiness!

POST 12Original post

cosmoline.....ahhhhhh, the sweet smell of cosmo.

POST 13Original post

Would there be a smell of Cosmoline after three or so years? That stuff 'outgasses' fairly quickly I thought...like maybe in the first 6 months of use...I'm not certain on that but I would think 3 years of driving would clear out any cosmoline smell?
