Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello how did Porsche come up with model number "911". I am curious about Porsche history and the origins of Porsche styling. Could someone please tell me why the ignition on a "911" on right hand (europe) left hand (northamerica) is close to the car door. I can't seem to find anyone who really knows why? Please help !! Thanks !!

POST 2Original post

I heard that they wanted to call it "901" but Peugeot had the rights to car numbers with zeroes in the middle

POST 3Original post

The key is placed there as a result of racing in past years I believe. At the start of the race, the drivers would run to the car and start it before taking off. With the ignition closer to the door, the driver could start it while getting in providing a slight advantage at the start. Don't know about the 911 designation yet....still new to Porsche myself.....

POST 4Original post

Porsche developed the 911 in the 60's as a replacement for the 356. It prototype debuted in 1963 at the Frankfurt Motorshow. They were originally going to call the car the 901 but Peugeot had the rights to name cars with three digits with a zero (0) in the middle (eg. 401, 501). The ignition is on the left side of the steering column on left-hand drive cars and on the right side of the steering column on right-hand drive cars. This is a throwback to the classic racing days when drivers used to have a running start to their cars (drivers would run and get in to their cars!) and being able to turn the key with the left hand and shift with the right gave Porsche drivers a slight advantage over drivers who have to turn the key with the left hand then move their left hand to the shifter. (Trivia: the Carrera name was taken frin the Mexican race "Carrera Pan Americana" where Porsche had a lot of success.) Are you a new Porsche owner? I noticed this was your first post. It is a tradition on this forum for new members to post photos of their cars. Post one when you can and WELCOME TO THE RENNLIST!

I once had the awesome privilege of participating in an enduro with a "modified Le Mans start". We lined up at an angle like the old days, but belted in. The co-driver ran across the track at the starting gun and handed over the keys and away we went. A childhood dream come true...

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes I am new to this Form. I just bought my first 911. 2002 Guards red 6-speed. I don't feel that there is any other proper Porsche than a 911. I had to go through my Corvette stage to get to this point. I have to say you can't beat german build quality. This is no Corvette!!!!!!!Wow!!!!!!

POST 7Original post

Well, its late so I have to comment.... Congrats on the 996! You will have a blast with the car! I have a lot of fun with my 2002 996, and its amazing what they have done with these cars that still have the motors in the wrong end! At the track, 145 mph is just like 55 mph on the highway. Its almost boring!! There are many proper Porsches, not just 911s. The Boxster is a fantastic vehicle, and if they put the same motor in it as in the 996, the 996's couldn't touch them at the track! (guess what motor RUF puts in the Boxster) The 911 is mythical, but there are many great Porsches. The poor Boxster gets the same bad rep as the 944 did.
