Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The sealed "outlet" has been opened and a pipe has been fitted from the new opening to the primary exhaust pipe, which leads to the exhaust tip.

I had the by-pass pipes before and it was way to loud for normal use (clients always knew when I was in the PCar).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey, when you have these guys working for you you come up with some whacky ideas. Ok, I have several sets of old C2 exhausts. And I was going to experiment with them. I have a gutted exhaust on my C2 now. I had this from a long time ago. I opened up the exhaust and esentially removed everything from the inside and had it welded back together. It sounds good. But still rather quiet. I had the by-pass pipes before and it was way to loud for normal use (clients always knew when I was in the PCar). I was thinking of opening up another set and essentialy putting in a U pipe from inlet to outlet with a bunch of holes in it. In theroy it should be quieter than bypasses and lounder than stock. See diagram below (pardon the stinky graphics) Anyone ever do this? Beaker says it will be just fine but you never know with that guy.

POST 2Original post

Why not make a DIY PSE, just weld a length of 5/8" tubing btwn the inlet and exhaust.

POST 4Original post

Tim - I think Chris is referring to something like this. (Chris - if this is not what you meant, please correct me). The first pic is the modified stock exhaust. The top "can" is stock and the bottom "can" has been modified (or hacked) to mimic the PSE. The sealed "outlet" has been opened and a pipe has been fitted from the new opening to the primary exhaust pipe, which leads to the exhaust tip. The second pic is the factory PSE. You can see that the "hacked" stock exhaust duplicates the additional outlet pipe in the PSE. If I had an extra set of stock exhaust cans I would do this mod tomorrow. Since I am leasing the car, I want to be able to easily change back to the stock set-up.

POST 5Original post

Please excuse my ignorance, what's PSE? Is this mod suppose to increase performance or is it a straight sound effect?

POST 7Original post

Interesting... the whole difference is that one extra pipe that for stock exhaust they seal? They should have just put them in all 996 stock! Boy... I think you just came up with the solution for cheap people like me!

POST 8Original post

i was under the impression that PSE is for musical enjoyment only. No performance enhancements (at least none claimed by Porsche and I'm sure they would if they could )

POST 9Original post

It sounds better, so you push down harder with the loud pedal. Seriously, I was unaware that there was zero performance gain. I'm suprised if that's the case

POST 10Original post

OK, I'm gonna buy that, it definitely makes me feel better every time I hear it but I am fairly sure there are no claimed performance benefits

POST 11Original post

I think since I changed to a sport exhaust (dansk Super sound) my P got about 5 sec's faster...meaning o-60 in O seconds.......or maybe I forget to clock it because I am listening to the great sound!!! No preformance increase....but I hardly ever used the radio....now I am thinking of tossing it completely to lose the extra weight!

POST 12Original post

The 5/8" bypass goes between the inlet and outlet pipes, not the body of the muffler. This makes it analogous to the Mk1 PSE (3.4 version).

POST 13Original post
