Suggestion
Usually the electrical circuitry acts up and not all electrical systems are alive that should be when the key is turned on and many opt to replace just the electrical portion.

When my switch was acting up, I tried replacing just the switch myself.

Where are you guys getting this $400 labor cost for replacing the switch assembly?

Suggestion
The mechanical (tumbler) section of the switch was - and still is - working well, but as Macster says, yours maybe different, but for minimal $$cost & ease of installation, just try replacing the switch portion first.

It happened to me but I couldn't move the key left or right, I had to tow the car, get it to the dealer and change the whole assembly a $700 Porsche dealer cost
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just to preface this, I did search throughout the forum but couldn't find anything that described the similar issue. So, the past week or so, I'd get into my 996 ('03) and I'd try to turn it over but nothing would happen at all. It usually took three or four times and it would finally turn over.
Well yesterday, I got into my car and went to turn it over and the ignition switch kept turning. So it went past the last position and kept spinning. I'd turn it back counterclockwise and it kept turning that way as well.
I finally just tried lining it up to where it needed to be and tried turning it over and poof....started like it should.
That to me states a failed mechanical portion of the switch...?
Any comments/suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance!!
I guess I'm a bit confused by your post, especially if you say you searched. The electrical portion of the switch is $15, or the whole assembly is somewhere around $100. Just take it out and see what's wrong with it. You probably will need to change the whole thing.

I just wanted to see if it seemed like a sign that the whole assembly would have to be replaced (or something of a greater magnitude) other than just the switch.
Usually the electrical circuitry acts up and not all electrical systems are alive that should be when the key is turned on and many opt to replace just the electrical portion.
Having the key tumbler turn is good sign the problem extends beyond the electrical portion of the switch.
My WAG is the whole thing needs to be replaced. I hope the problem isn't with the tumbler.
After you get the new assembly installed if you have a heavy key chain attached to your Porsche ignition key I would suggest you shed the heavy key chain.
1) The first time it happened to my 986, I got a few early pointers with difficult key insertion / extraction / failing to start. I replaced the electrical portion and all OK - it worked well.
2) Second time the switch failed as per your post - key turned through 180 degrees and only careful manipulation of the key would help the engine start. I had a spare electrical portion in my workshop, so I changed that again - bingo, worked like a charm.
On careful inspection, I found the second switch had failed because the plastic section had cracked, allowing the electrical contacts to drop out of the switch body.
The mechanical (tumbler) section of the switch was - and still is - working well, but as Macster says, yours maybe different, but for minimal $$cost & ease of installation, just try replacing the switch portion first. Changing out the whole assembly can be - er - demanding......

Been there done that. The same thing happened to me while I was at VIR this past year. I was able to get it started and never remove the key until I got home.
The entire ignition switch assembly cost me $180 direct from Porsche. With installation my independent charged me about $400 to replace it.
Ditto. When my switch was acting up, I tried replacing just the switch myself. Since I am not a contortionist, nor a patient man, I ended up taking it to my Indy. He recommended replacing the whole assembly and the cost was around $400.
Try electrical portion first. Simple, easy, cheap and often fixes problems that would seem to be tumbler related. If you are wrong, then you gambled and lost with a $12 part. If that doesn't fix it, leave the new one in and keep the old one as a spare. Then and only then, should you begin to think about changing the tumblers. Took me 15 minutes to swap out mine last time.
