Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I'll check with my local Porsche dealer on how much it will cost to have the OBC enabled, and the 4-stalk...I'm guessing it will be expensive (typical Japan).

[please excuse the broken English, I believe a Japanese -> English auto translator was used]

I did read of one person who installed a Tip steering wheel in his 6-speed and used the Tip switches to toggle the OBC.

The way I went about it was to set up my laptop, running the DVD, on the workbench right in front of my car.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Hi all,
I've a pre-owned 2001 C4 which didn't come with an onboard computer. I'm wondering if the onboard computer can be installed to it now or is this an option only on initial point of sale? If it's possible, does anyone have a rough idea on how much it may cost?
Cheers!
Sean
I thought ALL Carreras had the on board computer....but if you dont, all that is needed is the 4 stalk steering column upgrade and have it turned on at the dealer...all Porsche's have it, just a matter of the 4th stalk to toggle between screens.
Sean,
The odds are very small that the OBC is not already available in your car. If you can read the temperature immediately beneath the digital speed readout, then it is already turned on. If not, then many dealers, especially one with whom you have a relationship, will turn it on for free or very little cost. Actually, any shop with a PST2 can do so.
If it is already on, or once you have it turned on, then the various readouts are available via two methods:
1. removing your 3-stalk turn signal mechanism and installing a 4-stalk one with the 4th stalk being the one to control the OBC. There is a terrific step by step DVD available to guide you through an actual installation of this type. Order it here:
OBC DIY DVD
(I have no connection other than as a satisfied customer). I bought my 4-stalk and necessary wiring / connections from Sunset Porsche, by the way.
2. installing an extra front console momentary contact switch to toggle the functions of the OBC without the 4th stalk. (I believe one of the functions will be unavailable, but don't remember which). This is obviously a job of somewhat less complexity than removing your steering wheel. I did read of one person who installed a Tip steering wheel in his 6-speed and used the Tip switches to toggle the OBC.
Good luck
Those DVD's look excellent!
I'd be happy to support the makers of those DIY Porsche videos! How convenient to have this available eh?
For sure I want to enable the on board trip computer functions - with those video's I am sure I can handle it.
I have a 1999 C4 and it doesn't have the OBC - 3 stalks only, but I do see temperature on the display right now.
The temp display means that the OBC has been turned on in your car.
I first used this DVD for the Litronic retrofit. The way I went about it was to set up my laptop, running the DVD, on the workbench right in front of my car. Play / pause / work .... repeat cycle. It worked out great.
Yes, I think it's great to have these types of DIY video's.
I'd like to see more topics (wish list)
1. How to polish and detail a Porsche (I'd like to see some techniques)
2. How to install a discreet radar detector and laser jammer (Bel or Passport)
Kim,
Sorry for the late reply. My car's been in service for the past week, I just got it back this weekend.
I took a look under the digital speed readout and it doesn't display a temp reading so I guess there
is no OBC :-(. I'll check with my local Porsche dealer on how much it will cost to have the OBC enabled, and the 4-stalk...I'm guessing it will be expensive (typical Japan).
Cheers again!

. Pain to install, but boy it's a huge difference (listed 42%)!!
If you are a regular customer, you should approach him as you assume he will turn it on for no charge.
In the states, the 4-stalk assemby was around $160 from Sunset Porsche. The various other wires and connectors are a few dollars additional.
Re-raising an old thread...talked to Porsche, they said that they can't do it (policy reasons) :-
[please excuse the broken English, I believe a Japanese -> English auto translator was used]
> It may be possible physically, but we(as dealer) can't do the work
> because Porsche Corporation does not accept a postscript of an on
