Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey guys - I'm 80% done with installing PSS9s in an '01 996 C2. Fronts are done, and rears are out, with the new pieces assembled and ready to go in. I have a couple questions I hope you can help me out with, to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong. I already had to take a fully assembled rear corner back out because I'm pretty sure I put it together wrong (question R1 below). Here goes: Front: 1) I've heard that it's important not to forget the "upper thrust washer". Which piece is this, and how would I forget it? 2) What are the proper torques for the 13mm nuts holding the shock tower on at the top? 3) What's the max ride height, compared to stock? What I'm trying to figure out is how much drop I've got where it is now, so it would help to know where it would be if I maxed it out. Rear: 1) I'm not sure which orginal pieces NOT to reuse. I left out the large diameter plastic piece and the rubber piece that sits under it, which means I now have (bottom to top) the small, thick washer, a dish-shaped washer, the supplied gray collar, the OE mount with the three bolts in it, another dish-shpaed washer, two (jam) nuts, the lock nut for the adjuster clicker, the adjuster clicker, and the adjuster ****. I'm pretty sure that's all correct, but want to make sure I don't need to keep the other two OE pieces. 2) I was able to get the old strut out without taking any of the other suspension apart. I just unhooked the rear sway, unbolted the top and bottom of the strut, hammered and pried it loose, and wiggled it out. Is this normal? Did I break something? The 993 write up seems to be much more complicated. 3) (Again) what are the torques for the bolts on the top? 4) (Again) what's the max ride height relative to stock? TIA

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No help on that? I guess I'll just keep my fingers crossed. I've got another one: The car is done now, and headed to get alignment and corner-balance this week. Based on a variety of research what I've come up with is below. The car is to be used about 4k miles/yr on street and maybe 6-ish track days/year. Front camber: max negative Rear camber: -1.5 degrees Front toe: zero Rear toe: "a little" Caster: ? First off, what do you guys think? Second, what's "a little" and what caster should I use?

POST 3Original post

Here's what was measured (+/- 0.1) on my car after PSS9 install & alignment: F. Camber: -1.0 (shop told me this was max) F. Caster: 8.0 deg F. Toe: 0.0 in Rear Camber: -1.6 Rear Toe: 0.1in I like how the car handles though it does tramline. After 6 months the tires seem to be wearing evenly. I went about 1.25in lower than stock.

POST 5Original post

RamVA, I am planning to have my C4S switch to PSS9. It will be my project for this winter. I wonder how much time you spend on it and where you bought the coilover and how much? Thx

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The job took about 9 hours, not including runs back and forth to the tool store. I had help for about 5 of those. I think if we had to do it again we could do it all in about 5 hours. I highly recommend it as a DIY, but there are a couple parts that would be really tough alone. Either way if you take it on as a winter project you'll have plenty of time left for skiing. I should add that I'm not too handy with cars, and I've not taken on anything more ambitious than brake pads or harness bar install before. As far as tools go there's nothing too exotic except for the need for the 21mm and 22mm Hazet sockets for the top front spindle bolts. I couldn't find either, so we had to improvise to get the old ones off, and I'm going to let the alignment shop finish up the new ones (they aren't tight enough now) when it goes in tomorrow. I looked around a few places and got the parts (new) from Shox.com for about $2140 shipped. I vaguely remember the C4 pieces were a couple hundred less, but I'm not sure about the widebody. There is long, detailed 993 suspension FAQ here which looks very good, but is not that much help with the 996. Luckilly the 996 appears to be much easier, in particular at the rear. When it's all done I'll post abbreviated instructions and a tools list, though I unfortunately didn't take notes or pictures.

POST 7Original post

RamVA, are you located in VA? The install took me and another guy about 9 hours as well. I had some phone support from Alan C. on the board.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes, I'm in Alexandria. Do you have any insight on the Rear #1 question above?

POST 9Original post

If you can PM a photo, it would be easier to see what you are talkin about. I can compare it to mine.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good idea. It's at the alignment shop at the moment and they're going to check it all out. Hopefully that takes care of it, but if not I may do.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It's at Funktion Auto right now. They've confirmed correct assembly and tightened all the bolts for me. Thanks for the (offer of) help.
