Suggestion
Even if they changed 2 hours labor + an alignment, it should still be a lot less; hence I believe someone is trying to take you for a ride.
Replace rear shock plus labor and realignment was aroung $1000

I have always felt this car could use a little firmer rear shocks to keep the wabbly feeling in check.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

'01 996 coupe with 60k. Dealer told me last week at 60k maint check that right rear shock is leaking oil and needs to be changed in near future. I decided to wait since I am considering the ROW sport susp. Perfect reason now, right? Cost of replacing rear shock plus labor and realignment was aroung $1000. For that amount of money I have seen people here get the ROW sport susp. minus installation. What are the benefits of this sport susp? I have always felt this car could use a little firmer rear shocks to keep the wabbly feeling in check. But I also love the all-around capability with the stock susp. Please comment.
I just added the row kit to my car a few weeks ago. It's a bit stiffer, a little lower, and the car handles a little snappier. As a daily driver you'll definately notice bumps in the road a lot more with this kit. At a little over 1k for the upgraded sways and complete suspension it's quite a bargin.
First, $1000 to replace 1 shock and align the car is rediculous. This is a job that only take about 45 minutes and should not require a re-alignment if you are replacing it with the same type shock and not taking the control arms loose. Yes, you can get the shock assemblies out without unbolting the control arms. You just need to take the parking brake cable and brake line mounts off so the suspension can extend further down. I would expect a single shock to be in the $100-150 range. Even if they changed 2 hours labor + an alignment, it should still be a lot less; hence I believe someone is trying to take you for a ride.
Your cheapest option is to just buy a shock from a discount dealer (like Suncoast) and put it in yourself. There are directions on Renntech. I would not use this as a justifier to go ROW M030. With as much as they are gouging you on a single shock, they will probably want $1500 to install a ROW M030 and realign the car. I would not use a single shock as the decision maker for an upgrade.
If you like the balance and ride of your car, you should want to stick with the stock suspension. If you are looking for a tighter, more neutral feel and can accept some harshness then the ROW M030 will be a good choice. The ROW M030 will take a lot of push (understeer) out of the front end. It is also going to add some harshness in the rear end. It will still soak up large impacts well, but light impacts will become a lot more noticeable.
