Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
My race motor has lasted 4 seasons (I am now counting hours) so far at 7,800 rpm shifts and when we last took it a part to change compression it showed no wear.
Leading evidence: 'Replace compression it showed no wear' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace compression it showed no wear' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The brake pads are cheaper to replace than your tranny.

However, to use it in this manner when the notion strikes you or to use a downshift to set up for a corner is absolutely fine.

When you downshift, the gears are working from the axles back through the engine reversing the gear ratio putting stress on the tranny that can be avoided by using the expendable brake pads.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

To avoid shifting your tranny to minimize wear is kind of like using a window at your house to enter and exit to avoid wear on the hinges of your front door...........enjoy the car!!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have been looking for Porsche forum, and someone recommended this site. Are there any other Porsche forum sites, or is this the best one?
I have a 01 C2 with tiptronic. Is it okay to downshift on these transmission, which will save brake pads in the long run? Will this downshifting on tiptronics cause any damage to the engine? On manual transmission, is it not typical of the drivers to downshift for braking?
Cheers
shouldn't hurt engine. I have a tip and downshift all the time. That's why they put the - button on the steering wheel. When downshifting hit - switch and immediately pop the gas to raise your rpm's quickly to receive a smoother downshift.
NO NO NO - do not use the tranny to slow the car down. The brake pads are cheaper to replace than your tranny. Use your brakes to brake! You can save some brake pad and use up your $10,000 tranny or go for new brake pads when needed - you choose
Of course, downshifting to go faster is expected but you really should not use the tranny to slow the car down.
brake is cheaper than worn transmission. the brake is more than enough powerful for any downhills. tip will downshift on steep downhills. new tip tranny is like 13k i heard.
It's absolutely fine to down shift and up shift with your tip. Enjoy it that's what it was built to do! As other have stated, I wouldn't make an "every stop" habit of using your tranny to slow your car. However, to use it in this manner when the notion strikes you or to use a downshift to set up for a corner is absolutely fine.

LOL. That was too funny.
Thanks for all the comments. Can anyone recommend any other Porsche site or is this the best one? I have been searching for a good Porsche forum. I only found Roadfly and a few other smaller sites.
Down shifting to slow the car is also hard on the motor, I have been told by a few race mechanics. If you want the motor to last longer this is not a good practice. My race motor has lasted 4 seasons (I am now counting hours) so far at 7,800 rpm shifts and when we last took it a part to change compression it showed no wear.
Now, I will not know this for myself as I only allow the motor to slow the car in just a very few turns and will have nothing to compare it to. So let others chime in as to their thoughts on the effect. So far in my 5 years of racing I am very sastified with not doing this and believe the theory.
engine brake is not a good idea for tip. tranny.
it's ok to downshift to pass though. try to give it a little gas while downshifting to match the engine rev. and tranny.
Yeah, I do that all the time especially getiing into and out of a corner/turn.
The tip seems reluctant to downshift most of the time, maybe it's been programmed for economical fuel consumption?
The only thing I have to complain about the shifters on the steering wheel is
that sometimes when the steering wheel is being turned, your hands are not in the best position to quickly use the shifters!
Especially with the confusion when the buttons are upside down or sideways!
I wish the gearshift stick was an additional option to shift the tiptronic.
I checked out a few boards and found this one to be more to my liking. Some others are

Although Boxster Pete's board is more slanted towards Boxters, there's a lot of interesting stuff.

Do not use the tranny to slow the car, you are putting stress on the tranny that is not needed. When you downshift, the gears are working from the axles back through the engine reversing the gear ratio putting stress on the tranny that can be avoided by using the expendable brake pads. Tranny cost about $10,000 and the pads are only $100.
