Let me correct this comment, yvesatlanta's dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree and had to replace the MAF.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

If by "useless" you mean no actual improvement in the car's performance, I'd say painting anything (calipers, bumperettes, etc.).
If you believe aesthetics are useful, then it comes down to personal taste and nothing is useless.
K&N Cold Air Intake.

Only buys you frustration...
Useless as in superficial...... poseresque. I always get a chuckle out of guys who spend $2,000 to upgare to a GT3 roof liner.... Ok, I made that one up. Making changes to improve (to the eye of the beholder) the appearance is certainly a matter of personal taste. But some folks go a bit too far in my opinion. For example, I once saw a picture of a 996 over in Europe somewhere that was modified to look like a 997. My reaction was "Why???" That tops my list.
Having the PSE, I know I risk coming across as a bit hypocritical as many would say the PSE is a useless mod. So I admit I'm somewhat guilty myself. But where do you draw the line?
Hmmm to each there own but I can break mine down into the following categories
"I.CE." folks having fancy remotes for a head unit that is arms lengths away.
"Show" folks having a silver crest added to their 996
"Autocross" folks with 3 point harnesses
"DE" folks with a tow trailor
"street" folks with aftermarket ceramic brakes pads
Based on the post, the car was not wrecked. The owner changed all of the body panels, front, rear, and sides. The post that I read questioned the crashworthiness of the car as the body panels aren't "bolt-ons". Supposedly, a lot of structural modifications were necessary to complete the project and obvioulsy, the structural modifications weren't backed by factory crash testing.
Pretty extreme in my book.
My vote would be for:
1) so called performance air filters which do nothing but suck money out of your wallet.
2) 19 inch wheels which are heavier than the 18 inchers.
3) Certain (but not all) aftermarket exhaust systems which make inaccurate claims of increased power and torque. Buying one for a better sound is OK, more power ... mostly a joke.
No, that was the
Nevada Open Road Challenge
which is the May running of the Silver State Classic. One of the gate marshalls was kind enough to send me the photo he took (I've become an unexpected
very minor
celebrity at the Silver State because I had one of the few Porsches, and the only British accent, and then I wrote a little article for their homepage, so nice people keep doing me all kinds of favours! LOL)
Let me correct this comment, yvesatlanta's dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree and had to replace the MAF. This is not true for everyone. I've had absolutely no problems and gained 22 hp at the wheels from the K&N 63 series intake and a Fabspeed exhaust.

I vote for short shifter as the most USEFUL mod (yeah, I know that's not the question).
BTW, I just placed my subscription to Rennlist - will post pics of my car when the subscription is activated!

Your "no" response shows how ignorant your "overkill" statement is. Do a DE event, get hooked on tracking your car and you will quickly understand the usefulness of the trailer. I could make a list of pro's for you but I don't see the point.
I gained 50 hp by installation of the factory carbon fiber package. It shaved 1,000 lbs off the curb weight.
Friggen poseur with your la-tee-da "no MAF foulin' K&N" street rice mod . . .
Then please explain what your point is b/c what Edward said doesn't do anything to support your side. You said the trailer was useless and overkill yet have never done a DE so I am still confused as to what your point is.
This has me scratching my head as well. What do you mean?
For DEs, I had more fun when I used to "arrive and drive." Now, my track car is not street legal, so I MUST trailer to track events, whether they be races or DEs.
Personally, I can hardly wait to get a trailer. Driving "to" and "from" events while trying to fit all of my associated "expensive race crap" (said lovingly....
) in a 986 is not a whole lot of fun. Additionally, every trip is another heat cycle on the R compounds, plus additional wear.
I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight thinking about this!!
Is anyone up for a trailer group buy??
(Unfortunately, the trailer will probably need to wait a few years for my planned jump into Club Racing.....)
My car is street legal but depending on the venue, I may decide to trailer the car to the track. What goes into my decision?
1) Distance away from home (the further away, the more likely I am to tow)
2) Whether or not I want to run my R Compound tires (I prefer to save them for the track and minimize street driving).
In short, I wouldn't think of driving from LA to Vegas, Laguna Seca, Infineon, etc. on R Compounds. Seems like a good waste of rubber compound.
Some people find it odd that I tow a street legal car to the track. But hey, it floats my boat.
Good point fellas and all ones that would be on my list as well. Maybe DC is starting to understand. One that nobody has said (and maybe more rare) is that towing my car to the track allows my to go to and from the track WITH my wife since in the past we would drive the car AND the Cayenne loaded with all the crap for the track. Now I can have the wife up in the Cayenne with me and the car and all it's track crap in the back.
Another great thing (since my trailer is enclosed) is I can go to the event, drop my trailer and car and leave it there all locked up (along with all the track crap) and then just drive the Cayenne over to the hotel at the end of each day.
Just a few more items to add to the list........
Dell, you have a covered trailer? That is fantastic! God how I'd love one of those for my motorcycles even more than for my cars. Tell me the truth, do you have it decked out like Michael and K.I.T. did on Knight Rider?
Duh da da da da dada, duh da da da da dada ...... (just doesn't write the same, does it?!)
Nice duck and cover. Seems you typed before you thought. To each his own is indeed correct but when you say overkill and useless you need to support with facts which you failed to do. Time to find another thread with some usefulness (pun intended).........
later
Nope it doesn't but I could sure hear the music in my head and got a nice chuckle out of it. Oh how I miss those days of chessy shows.
As for the trailer, I decided that if I was going to do a trailer I might as well buck up and go for the enclosed type so i could get good use out of it. And the great thing? There is little risk involved if you don't like it or stop going to the track since the market for enclosed trailer (nice one's) is very strong. I could get 80% of what I paid for it easily. 90% if I held out a bit. Since there is no motor, etc, if it is in great shape you can get top dollar for it.
And here I thought I was leaving this thread and there goes Todd pulling me back in!
Funny thing is, he's not kidding! Don't let that fool you though, Todd can hang with the best of them on the track
Actually, that's not the case. There are no facts needed in a post as such nor do I feel obligated as if I've been cornered
. Anyone can rebut anyones desire to have things "you" or "I" feel are useless. I stand by what I said and am not at all intimidated by someone who drives their car on a track.
Oh you should be because I would crush you on the streets of DC by doing rally corners around you if you don't let me merge, like this:
And then when I get to Starbucks I will do a little victory dance like this:
Which will make all the Georgetown Coeds move like this:
After all, this Interweb is very serious business
How about
:
1. fake BOV noise device
2. Tornado air intake gas saver thingy
3. electric supercharger
4. any of the Ebay style "hot air intakes"
5. heavy spoilers and wheels
That's the worst I can think of.....
