This needs to have 2 hoses on it, and don't go buying them at DC Auto, head down to lowes or home depot, and get some rubber tubing used for the garden ponds etc, $4 and you're done.

This is probably the same leakI had before and on this occassion it may have "run out" a bit differently than when I was driving or perhaps my wife did not properly describe the entry point.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Looking for ideas -- done a search -- one post back in 2005 but nothing conclusive. 2002 Targa -- about a month ago in very heavy rain the driver's side rearseat got very wet -- my wife saw the water coming in and she said it was dripping down from "behind my head" (right hand drive car) it only went on for about 10 seconds and I was driving and could not see it myself. later I had to pull out the back carpets -- it was very wet. I hosed the car from every angle -- and could not make it leak again. Reassembled the interior of the car -- fingers crossed. Yesterday -- heavy rain most of the day whilst I was at work -- went out and got in the car and the seatbelt that came out from the retractor was dripping wet as though the whole seatbelt had been submerged in water -- but that can't be the case because the water would be leaking out through the panel if the water was "that deep" So -- the water must be dripping down somewhere inside the rear side panel and just running down the seatbelt. This is probably the same leakI had before and on this occassion it may have "run out" a bit differently than when I was driving or perhaps my wife did not properly describe the entry point. Does anybody have any knowledge or has anybody heard about the rear side window seals leaking? Does anybody know how they are sealed up do they have sealant or are they just a good quality seal that is dry? Thanks in advance

POST 3Original post

Check out this link. It containd a diagram for the Coupe drains, bet the Targa drains should be in similar locations. 996 Drains

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the idea -- never crossed my mind -- a real possability that a drain is blocked -- will check and will report back -- thanks

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

okay, have had a good look at the drain tubes -- wow very different in a Targa There is a drain tube at the front each side -- much the same as in a Coupe. There is a drain tube right at the back at the bottom of the lifting glass window -- one each side -- to pick up anything that leaks in around the back window And then there is the drained tube that I think is my leaker and it is at the back of the sliding glass top -- almost above my head but believe me it's a weird little piece of gear -- it's about 1 1/2 inches long with a little metal insert in the end of it and it just hangs there and dumps the water down into a channel and from there I can't actually see where it goes -- it doesn't really make sense so I will have to have a better look -- perhaps the little metal insert is really a broken piece of tube or something like that which would explain the leak Anyway a bit more looking and prodding to try and work it out -- perhaps the easiest thing to do is to look at the other side but there's a lot of stripping down of the panels and trim to get to the point where you can look in at it even though it is just behind the cloth cover but you don't seem to get a good look at it unless you strip things back. Does anybody have a drain tube schematic for the Targa? (That would be really helpfull for this problem)

POST 6Original post

Your 1 1/2 inches long piece of metal is supposed to have a drainage tube on it thats why your back seat is getting wet, the water is not being put into the channel that then runs down the length of the glass roof in the grove, and then out the back of the car undeneath. You should have 2 tubes around 5-6 inches long, one tube attached into this metal bit on each side. Simple cable tie to hold it on. Here's an overview, http://dcauto.gotdns.com/illustration/index/144258903 Number 8 is the part I think you are talking about, it's pretty much just behind the drivers seats when the top is closed. This needs to have 2 hoses on it, and don't go buying them at DC Auto, head down to lowes or home depot, and get some rubber tubing used for the garden ponds etc, $4 and you're done. Cheers Sean

POST 7Original post

Had exactly the same thing, all came down to the drainage tubes being out of position which can only happen if the pin at the bottom of the fitting is loose. As per the attached (from the workshop manual) the tubes must sit inside the guide to align with the water channel to the drain point.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks MAV and OZI -- I have stripped it all back and can see the two little tubes that seem to pick up the water that would get in from the back edge of the main glass roof (but it's hard to look up in there and see that so it's a guess). Anyway, the tubes look to be in the correct place and are still in the little clips that align them up with the drainage channel BUT the one on the driver's side where it leaks from has some damage on the edge of the hose at the very bottom -- looks like it has been fouling on something. That must be the leak site -- but is may only be occassional when the said tube end gets tangled up. Now -- I have to ensure it always stays "pointed" at the drain channel. I have the other side to compare with so should be ok. Will wait to Saturday and will get some daylight time in to sort it out. The info you guys (and the earlier posters) has got me too the place I need to be to fix this -- thanks And -- if you get the chance operate the sliding rooftop with the cloth strip removed -- you can see all the workings and the little drain tube we are talking about fold up and get clear -- really neat design. Thanks
