I didn't when I installed the Schnell SSK, but I got lucky.

I and many others have installed the Schnell system purchased through Vertex.

Suggestion
The one thing I would suggest is using the B&M instructions for install (They're much clearer).

When you guys put the SSK, did you use the same cable attachment point as the standard shifter?

Hi guys,
I saw a schnell short shift kit on ebay and was wondering if any of you guys have installed this in your car. How does it feel? How's the quality?

I and many others have installed the Schnell system purchased through Vertex. I had mine in for about 1 year and to date...love it. Best mod I had so far. Instructions were good with pictures but also read the B&M instructions for refernce.
Great product
I haven't seen a SSK for these cars that doesn't work great. I got mine on ebay for $97. Love it. The shifting will feel very stiff at first but will loosen up after about 100 miles of good city-type shifting. Make sure that you lubricate the parts well.
I had a B&M in my boxster and now have a schnell in my 996. The Schnell is completely equal in every aspect. The one thing I would suggest is using the B&M instructions for install (They're much clearer).
When you guys put the SSK, did you use the same cable attachment point as the standard shifter? I found that if I attached the cable to the same place, the SSK will make a metal knocking noice when I shift to 1st, 3rd and 5th gear. Further investigation showed that the stick of the ssk will hit the caseing (blue part for B&M, golden part for schnell) if i attached the cable in the standard place. I need to put the cable further back (to rear of the car) to clear the caseing.
The point here is: drive your car with the center console off first to make cable adjustments. You will not have an emergency brake in that conficuration so be werry careful. It's too bad you cannot access that linkage more easily!

I have the Schnell (not installed yet) but I'm not impressed by the surface finish on the machined *****. I'm worried about rapid wear in the plastic sockets.
The emergency brake still works when the cover is off the center console; at least for a 996. These shifters fit in 997's so there my be something different is their case.
