This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I need advice on the possible purchase of the following car that is local to me in Canada. I'm just wondering whether it's even worth it to go and see it. The guy brought it in from California recently (trailered). Clean title, bought from auction, probably no records. 1999 996 C4 with limited options, 6spd with ~30k miles, Silver on Black with clear title (ha!). The guy said it was hit in the back driver's side wheel so all the suspension/strut/wheel were damaged. The driver's side door airbag module deployed as well. The strut was replaced but nothing else. He said there are minor scratches on the bumper and rear quarter panel, but the panels need to be alligned because they are shifted. It's already been imported into Canada with all req'd paperwork so he has an Ontario title which reduces costs and hassles even further for me. The engine runs, but only for a few minutes because some air motor that sits in the back driver's side was damaged?? Not sure what this is as I'm more of an air cooled guy looking to get into a water pumper. What do you guys think? He said he took it to a local body shop and they gave him a quote of $7200 Cdn to fix everything but I'd be very wary of this quote. What do you think is the worst damage? Frame straightened? Engine block cracked? Tranny case cracked? I'd think the brunt of the force would be taken up by the suspension links, wheel and strut, but if the frame is damaged, is it even worth having a look at the car to have a PPI done on it? Are these types of parts (suspension links, sway bar, air motor?, door air bag) easy to find through Ebay/dismantlers? The guy's asking $25.5k Cdn. Considering local 99 C2's are going for minimum $40k + with high mileage, is this car worth it? I know it's limited info to go on, but I'm curious to see what your thoughts are on what the worst it could be.

POST 2Original post

theres no air motor that would stop it from running the secondary air pump wont stop the car its its broken so its gonna be more involved hit in the tire it likley has transmission damaged external or internal from the shaft getting forced in. just what your describing in suspension parts + install sounds close to 5-7k usd no body work orther other incidentals. you can try a ppi but i owuldnt get to excitied, from your desciption if you cant do the work yourself id run have any picture?s

If it were relatively easy to fix, why wouldn't the seller fix it and then sell it? Personally, I wouldn't go forward on a transaction like this. You are taking over headaches that someone else deemed to difficult to deal with. I think the only thing more frustrating than not owning a Porsche (when you want one) would be owning one that doesn't drive properly or gives you too many headaches.
