Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

21 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

That probably didn't help him one bit, but it sure was funny!!

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Started my car yesterday(cold start) and white smoke came out the exhaust. Has never happened before. It didnt happen this morning, but it has me concerned. Anyone have an idea what causes this?

POST 2Original post

A little smoke on start up is normal for a "flat" motor. Oil can accumulate in the cylinder walls rather than drain (since the cylinders are horizontal). This oil will burn off when you first start the car which will cause some brief smoke. My cars only do it occasionally, but it does happen. It is a fairly common question on the board.

POST 3Original post

Are you sure it is white? White smoke = coolant or water Blueish smaoke = oil Blackish smoke = fuel

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Definately white smoke. Will see if it happens again. Thanks for the replies!

POST 5Original post

Yea it will. Can't tell you when but it will. I happens more often to me at the track after the car has been driven hard, then restarted the next morning at the track. Some times it does it, some times it dosen't. Happens once in a while at home. Everyone I have spoken to, including the dealer, says it is normal. I am not worried about it.

POST 6Original post

I think it means your car has elected a new pope. Not sure, but I think that's what it means. Hope that's helpful.

POST 7Original post

Same here, usually happens at startup afer the last hard run. Then it goes away at the next startup (or next few days) after driving it for a while without pushing hard. In fact, I notice mine has more smoke come out of the passenger side exhaust than the driver's side. Wonder why...?

POST 8Original post

That probably didn't help him one bit, but it sure was funny!!

POST 9Original post

wasn't just condensation of a cold morning start?

POST 10Original post

If I start the car and run it for a very short time, then park it overnight, I get white smoke when I start it the next time. This usually happens if I pull the car out of the garage, wash it, and put it back in. On the other hand if I drive the car around the block after washing and drying it (to blow the water out of the crevices) then there's no white smoke the next day.

POST 11Original post

Michael, I wouldnt be to concerned as it does occur, for me its when she sits in my garage for over 4 days. Usually on start up it occurs then next day it will be fine.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys! Hasnt happened again, yet. Not as concerned as I was.

POST 13Original post

I like the Pope theory. I need to look back as I start mine - I've never noticed any smoke, but then again, I'm too busy being enthralled by the sound of the flat-six roaring.

POST 14Original post

People often say that driving a Porsche is a deeply religious experience, so the pope theory seems to hold up.

POST 15Original post

In reality the white smoke on start-up is largely ceremonial. Every 911 does this from time to time to celebrate the year that it took to produce them. Riad gave a good description of the process.

POST 16Original post

I get it too, no worries. Holy crap that Pope thing was funny....

POST 17Original post

How many miles do you have on yours? I have 75K and get the smoke also the next day- after a hard drive.

POST 18Original post

9900 miles - I get white smoke for about 2 minutes on a cold start when the car has been sitting. White smoke seems part of the Porsche experience - I used to get it with my 1994 too. As long as it goes away after a few minutes, it's no problem. You've got 75k on your Cab? It looks great in the avatar....

POST 19Original post

White smoke for 2 minutes is too long. Typically a short burst of smoke on startup is normal, maybe even up to 20-25 seconds if the car has sat for a period of time. Anything longer than that, and you start suspecting a bad oil/air seperator.

POST 20Original post

Anything longer than that, and you start suspecting a bad oil/air seperator _____________ doc, if oil/air seperator is not fixed, what will happen? i get the occasional, normal white smoke unpon start up, uusally after 30 min of track session then parked for another 30 min. but i just noticed i get large puff of white smoke at tight 60mph left hairpins, like T2 at laguna seca. it occurs just when i shift from 2nd to third. is this normal, ok, or something is broken? car felt the same, i even set my best time on one of those laps at 1:45. (cayman S)

POST 21Original post

OK, maybe 2 minutes is exaggerating a bit. I see it when it starts, rev it a few times, and it's gone. You're right, 2 minutes is too long....
