I just installed the factory ssk (bought for $249 from Brandywine).

Having a new leather rear center console and factory SS kit installed soon by the dealer.

Suggestion
It is NOT that difficult and will take you 2 to 2.5 hours the first time, and half of that time is spent removing/replacing the console.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Frog - DO NOT pay them to install the SSK and console. Install them yourself. It is NOT that difficult and will take you 2 to 2.5 hours the first time, and half of that time is spent removing/replacing the console. Since you have to remove the rear center console anyway, there is no additional time required to swap out the console. I could probably do it in 1.5 hours now that I have done it once. Prior to installing my SSK, I had NEVER done anything like that to any of my cars.
The B&M instructions are very good. If you have a color printer, print the instructions from the B&M web site.

The hardest part of the whole process is removing the shift **** from the OEM shifter without hurting yourself. That sucker is stuck on there very tightly. If you decide to do the install yourself, let me know and I will share a tip with you on how to remove the **** without hitting yourself in the face with it (seriously).
If you still decide that you want to pay someone else to do it, the maximum charge should be 2 hours of labor.
Sadly I don't really have the time to do it, I am sure I am capable...
Also I would get 2 year warranty on that...
Are 3 hours from the dealer is too much?
I just installed the factory ssk (bought for $249 from Brandywine). It took about 2 hours +/- to install and that included taking out the driver seat (I have racing seats). It would definitely take less time if I had to do it again.
GOTA911 is right - you have to remove the console to get to the shifter, so there should not be any additional labor for that (unless you count removing the console from a box).
With this job, I thought the hardest part was cutting off the plastic tabs. Now that I know that that whole area is discarded, it would be much quicker.
As for time, 3 hours is WAY to much time. I read and re-read a few sections and still was done in less time. This is definitely a DIY job. Unless your dealer is right around the corner from your house, in the time spent driving to/from the dealer, you'll be almost done this job and have several hundred more $$ in your wallet. If I lived closer to NY (and I'm not sure where in NY you live), I'd offer to do the job for you.

if you look at the B&M instructions, you will see that the console is taken apart and removed to get to the shifter. I'd be hard pressed to have a dealer charge extra to install a console when they are already removing it to install a SSK then reinstalling it.
Regardless, it certainly isn't a 3 hour job. This is a relatively basic job. Do it yourself then sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor - a great SSK and console - and still have $$$ in your wallet.
Thanks for all the replies. Honestly, the plastic tab deal and the lid part turns me away from a DYI. Also I wouldn't want to scratch or mess up the new console, an $800 part...
The plastic tab on the OEM shifter can be removed in less than 4 minutes. Instead of using a knife to cut the tabs, use a sharp chisel. One firm tap with a hammer per tab is all you need. I still maintain that you CAN do this.
hey frog, I almost forgot to ask what they are charging you for the Porsche SSK?
I agree with gota911, you can do this job yourself. The plastic tabs aren't that difficult to remove and the whole shifter unit is no good anyway. Read through the instructions again (make sure you have the proper torx screwdrivers) and take your time. It really is an easy job to do and certainly not worth 3 hours of dealer labor (although it will not even take them 1 hour). You'll have the satisfaction of doing the job yourself and appreciate knowing a little more about your car.

you can get the OEM SSK from Brandywine for $249-$299. I bought mine 2 weeks ago and they still had around 30 in stock. They even listed them on ebay for $299.
