they lower compression with a thicker head gasket, and also depending on kilometers on the motor already, will recommend a rebuild.
Leading evidence: 'Recommend rebuild' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend rebuild' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Wouldn't RUF (pronouced ROOF) have to change more to make the car handle the added performance?

Suggestion
you'll need the turbo engine (crate with turbos, or just the block and might as well send it to any of the tuners on the forum to have it built up), the wiring harness, and the computer (unless you run standalone).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just curious if anyone knows how much it would cost to convert my 996 to a 996 turbo? Just the bare bones minimum.
I found this website with some information.

Any other input or links would be appreciated.
It's cheaper to just buy a turbo, it's real expensive to do and the NA 996 engine just isn't up to it as the end of the day. You're resale will also be killed further adding to the cost.
RUF will supercharge the car for 22k and given their reputation, resale value will not be hit much but they insist on an engine with < 40k miles even so. 2 year warranty also.
Agreed, considering all costs including resale, you are better off to sell your car and antie up the difference for a TT. Aside from the turbo it is a much more robust motor and has a chassis, suspension and brakes that are up to the task. Modding your car is like asking a dog to do the work of a horse.
I want a turbo CABRIOLET. That is the reason I am considering droping in a new turbo engine if it is even possible. From what I can tell all of the 996/997cab turbos are over 100K. If I can drop in the engine for 30K I would be 25-35K ahead.
What does a new turbo engine cost?
well you've got a 2002 which means u have the Egas. you'll need the turbo engine (crate with turbos, or just the block and might as well send it to any of the tuners on the forum to have it built up), the wiring harness, and the computer (unless you run standalone). Oh..and the transmission/clutch.
motors can be had on ebay once in a while for about 17G's...i'm sure some 996TT's have been written off and their motors yanked, or PM GREEK-TURBO-RACER, he may be able 2 help u with that.
all in all you're probably looking at 30 grand. what you will have in the end will be very interesting from every aspect except resale value. You have the stiffer C4 chassis, and rear wheel drive in a lighter weight setup than a turbo carbio (not sure what the difference is, but every little bit helps). throw in the gobs of power from the TT motor and you should be a happy camper after working out the kinks (also...figure out how to cool that thing effectivly).
do the numbers game and see how far ahead $$$ wise you would be vis a vis just buying a 996TT.
Interesting theory. Here's a few hurdles that may or may not be insurmountable.
1. Turbo is a wide body, You have a C2 narrowbody cab. Don't believe the engine will fit withiout major work.
2. Suspension is geared towards a C2. It may not handle well with the added power and weight, unless, again without major work.
3. Intercoolers. Where to put them?
4. Brakes. Well, those are an easy upgrade, but have to be added to the bill.
5. TT is AWD, but I know people have put an AWD tranny in a C2 with no problems.
I don't have the expertise of many of the posters here, but my .02 is that this would cost more than $30K to do properly. The engine, brakes, tranny and install costs could get you to $30K right off the bat. But then there is the problem of the intakes for the intercoolers. This would probably require widening the rear fenders and adding ducts. To do that kind of bodywork properly from a good shop is going to add many thousands more. So you take a C2 Cab with a blue book value of $45-50K or so depending on mileage, dump $35-40K more in it with no guarantee the thing will really work properly, and now you have an $80-90K invested in a car that might have a resale value of $50-60K. I just can't see any way this conversion could make sense. Also, whenever you get into a custom project like this, there is no guarantee of what it will cost in the end. You may end up part way into it and discover that you're over budget, and then you're stuck.
^ as far as cooling goes..copy RUF..they make narrow body turbos
such turbo conversions are found on older cars moreso than the newer ones. probably because 996's depreciate so badly that ur better off just buying the turbo rather than the parts to build one yourself. of course this depends on the region of the world your in as well. In places like canada were the cars don't depreciate as much, or japan where there's like a 50%+ tax on cars built by foreign devils, it may make financial sense (plus in japan everyone's crazy about tuning anyhow)
If you're ready to spend that kind of money why not go the RUF supercharger route? You are asking for a very unpleasent experience. I have been down a similar road before. It's more expensive then you initially expect being a pioneer.
Yep
Thats my point, give up on the turbo and go super with RUF. Resale should be good given RUFs reputation and you'd have a 2 yr warranty on the resulting work.
What do they do for 22k? Just add supercharger? How much more HP/Torque? On a car like mine C4S, im sure its ready for more HP given that it has everything the Turbo has, but a C2? Wouldn't RUF (pronouced ROOF) have to change more to make the car handle the added performance?
discussed so many times do a search and you will find everything you could possibly want to know.

they lower compression with a thicker head gasket, and also depending on kilometers on the motor already, will recommend a rebuild. As for additional re-enforcement, i'm not sure if they do or not. A lot of the EVOMS kits runing around are doing so witout falieurs, and those kits don't even lower compression as is my understanding. Perhaps these motors arn't as fragile as we thought (although i guess the real test will be once some of these people have accumulated 50k or so on the SC kits).
Cheers
