I changed battery, no dice. Swapped battery into spare key where it worked fine so that is not the problem.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 1 adjusted by outcome qualification.

2 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

2004 996, in service for almost 3 years now. Remote function on key no longer works. I changed battery, no dice. Swapped battery into spare key where it worked fine so that is not the problem. Car is still under warranty - do you know if this is covered? Manual says nowt, couldn't find anything on search either. Many thanks in advance for help.

POST 2Original post

yes it should be covered unless you dumped it in a puddle

POST 3Original post

Yes I agree with Firehawk. The key forms an integral part of the car's security system therefore it must be covered under warranty. You do know that they will give you new keys and the new keycodes have to be programmed into the car? I had the same issue and I received two new keys and I had to take it Porsche to have them program the codes into the car. Ciao, Adrian.

POST 4Original post

Key is covered. I just had my entire alarm system module replaced and it required re-progamming 2 keys...all covered.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks to all, i have spoken to the dealer and they are going to look at it tomorrow, covered under warranty. Incidentally though, how long do the batteries typically last?

POST 6Original post

depends how long they are in your pocket with the button depressed for

POST 7Original post

both my keys died recently and the dealer fixed it under warranty, no problem. takes a good 30-60 mins though as they have to plug in the computer and enter security code after security code to re-program them. Typically there is only one guy in the dealership who has the magic key to the codes, so you should plan ahead and not just turn up. Before you do all that though, try this. Flip out a good battery, turn it over and re-insert. Leave it for 10 seconds. Flip it back and it could just work. I had to do this twice last week (the key just stopped working/didn't even flash red) and it fixed the problem immediately. Reversing the battery does some kind of reset in the key. That may save you a trip to the dealer....... Dealer also told me that he sees this issue (keys stopping responding) quite often.
