However, when I spoke to Roock's technician a few days ago he himself indicated that they used a black box.
Leading evidence: 'Use black box' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'best you could hope' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check "phillipj" posts' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
It is stil a 99', and you can get a 02+ X51 in the low thirties, and a early 997 in the forties, so upper twenties is probably the best you could hope for.

Suggestion
If the 3.6 is 'cheaper' how come owners don't do a 3.6 when replacing a bad 3.4 motor?

Suggestion
Not sure what the associated cost (in the long run) would be to install the 3.6 in a MK1..
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have searched and read for a while now and I want to get the final word because there's alot of conflicting info out there:
The 3.4L "remanufactured" engine that I am ordering from my dealer, is it upgraded to the most current design in any way? Gears, RMS, IMS, etc?
I was at my friends shop today (Vision Motorsports in Laguna Hills, CA) and a 3.4L engine was just delivered from Porsche. I was surprise as the engine came with everything to include exhaust manifolds (ready to bolt right in). I asked the same question you asked above and was told that the engine was completely upgraded and divorced of any RMS, IMS, etc., problems. It was pretty...
They have the latest RMS, which is still known to leak but much more rare.
There haven't been any significant IMS updates.
The heads are the same which have a couple of weak spots.
I would have to disagree.
what happened to:
" swap in a 3.6 X51. The engine is actually about 1,000 cheaper than a 3.4 reman and the dealership is willing to negotiate with Porsche to pay for my core."
NO WAY I would take a 3.4 over an x51
Oh yeah..I really wanted to put in the X51, Jim Ellis orginally quoted $17,500 for the entire install. Unfortunately their shop foreman thought we were putting an X51 in a 2002 year car.
When they worked out the updated price for swapping it into a 99', that price became 30,000 (28,000 + 2,000 clutch,FW). Cant swing that....
If you wanted to do the upgrade to a 3.6, either straight or X51 you should have talked to Roock in Atlanta, they have done many and only charge about $2,000 mor for th upgrade than a straight 3.4, and the cost of the 3.4 is at least $1,500 mor than a 3.6 X51. It might not be to late to do it. They also do 3.8S engines. The one caveat is that price is for an E-gas car, if yours is mechanical there would be additional expense.
As to the cars worth with a 3.6 X51 in it. It is stil a 99', and you can get a 02+ X51 in the low thirties, and a early 997 in the forties, so upper twenties is probably the best you could hope for.
I considered Roock however, living in Atlanta there are many that have opinions of him, not all good...
More importantly, Roock uses a piggyback system that I'm sure is not emission compatible.
Furthermore, being military, I'll be all over the country in the next 5 years and I can't afford to have engine issues that can't be handled universally.
I doubt you can get X51package in the low 30s.... probably mid to high 30's ... an 04 anniversary is still going for 40+
as for the 99 w x51... the resale goes up... cause its a NEW X51 engine..... a 2002 x51 is almost 7 year old motor and ready to blow up.... x51 cars are purchased for a reason... it all depends on what value you place on a new motor.... to me... its worth a lot.... the newer motor the better..... even in a 99....
Navy,
You haven't any idea what you are talking about.
Roock doesn't use any piggy back.. He simply uses an RPM window trigger to control the Variocam+. Any mechanic anywhere can replace it tweek it etc. And it has nothing at all to do with emissions. I pass with flying colors every time and routinely get 28-30MPG on the highway.
BTW: I have a Roock installed 3.6 (non x51) that just dyno'ed 299.10 HP at the rear wheels tonight.
Order your motor from Sunset (save a bundle) and have it shipped to Roock and they will have you out the door for about 3-4K over the cost of the motor. Not 30K.
...here's a dumb newbie question: why is the 3.6 'cheaper' than the 3.4? Or am I missing something in the discussion??? Can someone fill in the blanks:
3.4 crate motor:_________
3.6 crate motor:_________
If the 3.6 is 'cheaper' how come owners don't do a 3.6 when replacing a bad 3.4 motor? Or is there more to it than 'plug & play'?
mar
Marlon,
A 3.6 is cheaper because they are more available. The 3.6 doesnt just drop into a car that had a 3.4. Depending on the model year it is easier or harder but has been done countless times now.
As explained to me by a friendly parts manager at Porsche; the 3.6 or 3.6 X-51 is cheaper because the factory has raised the price on the 3.4 when it went out of "warranty" conditions. The 3.6 may still fall under normal warranty conditions and for that reason Porsche has kept the "in house" price of the 3.6 low.
I stand corrected. However, when I spoke to Roock's technician a few days ago he himself indicated that they used a black box. Right, wrong, or indifferent I just dont feel comfortable putting that big of a decision in the hands of someone I dont know when the recourse to fix any potential problems orto salvage a situation gone sour could be monumental.
JDS,
I didn't know that the C4S all got the x51 powerkit? So all 3.6's had 320HP and the Powerkit cars (anniversary, x51, etc) had 345hp at the crank. The dyno # is at the wheels and reflects drivetrain loss.
My mods... ECU tuning via Roock (actually subbed to Protomotive), EVOMS intake, cat bypas and Fabspeed Mufflers.
Navy,
The black box that Michael refers to is the RPM window switch. He puts it in a black plastic box (LOL) There is nothing complicated about it's operation, at a preset RPM the box supplies +12 volts to 2 solenoids to trigger your cams to their high lift mode for more power. To make the switch be less abrupt Roock sets up a delay circuit so that bank 1 and bank2 are slightly offset.
Talk to him, ask him questions. It is really simple and not even a dealer will be able to tell that anything has been done to your car. At the worst they will think that you have the Eurox51 code with some funky fuel maps but that it is (and they can't overwrite it).
