Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
this is due to the MOST optical bus inside the car.
Leading evidence: 'most optical bus inside the car' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'most optical bus inside the car' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Use cd based system' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
I am very disappointed that Porsche uses a CD based system and that you have to load the information CD into the system before using it.

Suggestion
you can't use the changer for the PCM CD, it must be loaded into the PCM's own drive.

With PCMII you can use the drive for audio CDs which is great - you get a new CD and don't want to have to load it into the changer - just stick it into the drive and listen away...

I really like my PCMII - and the user interface for audio functions is way cooler than using the factory stereo head unit.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have PCM1 and it has worked flawlessly for me across the country on my road trips!!
For those of you who have the PCM2 navigation system installed, could you provide your thoughts on this system...accuracy, ease-of-use, etc.? I'm considering a retrofit but the price tag is pretty high....
Thank You.
Retrofit? As in put it in a car that doesn't have PCMII?
If you are going to spend that kind of money, talk to Rick Reus @ Reus Systems. He builds in the Pioneer touchscreen nav that blows away the PCMII and it looks like a factory install.

and tell him Ryan sent you.
for people that want to keep the factory speakers / amp
there is no other navigation solution other than PCM2
this is due to the MOST optical bus inside the car.
so... pcm2 is the best solution
The system is easy to use. I am very disappointed that Porsche uses a CD based system and that you have to load the information CD into the system before using it. The system is as accurate as my previous M3's nav and my friend's Mercedes nav. I haven't had the opportunity to compare it to any Japanese car manufacturers. That said, I don't think that it is worth the money to have it retrofitted to your car unless you use nav frequently. There are portable systems that work reasonably well and cost much less.
Just got it and it's OK. Just OK so far.
Yes, the fact that you need to put a CD in to use it is kind of a pain. If you get PCM I recommend getting a CD changer also.

If I didn't have the unit, I'd strongly recommend getting an after market unit installed (like Reus) - why? Because then you'd be able to add: MP3 support, touchscreen Nav, DVD Movie support, Satellite Radio support, etc...
aftermarket radios are a grey area
some people get one immediately after getting a new car, some don't
personally, for me it depends on how good the stock one is...
the Porsche radios are just complete **** in terms of functionality.
i dont have a PCM2 (yet..) and i say yet, because i need navigation and im about to have the dealer retrofit it to my car next month...
however, it just pisses me off that porsche was either too dumb, or too smart (not sure which one it is yet) to let aftermarket equipment be used in their cars, hence assuring that end users are forced into buying MOST bus compatible crap.

The only pain is that with PCM1 is I have 7 discs for the USA other than that it works flawkessly
PCM II is very accurate and fairly easy to use. I say fairly easy because my wife's Nav in her Lexus GX-470 truck is all touch screen entry which is much easier to use that turning the dial and entering the info by pushing the button. Integrated stereo/CD changer functions are nice. MUST have CD Changer to really maximize the PCMII so you don't have to take out the Nav CD to listen to a music CD. If I did not have it in the car from the factory, I would add an aftermarket touch screen version if possible.
