I had the car in to have the seats replaced per the factory recall, and asked the service rep to have the tech listen to the engine and let me know if anything's up.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No, not the kind I usually do, but a sort of noise the engine is making. Having not owned one of these before, I'm trying to determine if what I'm hearing is a normal Porsche sound or something else. As the tip is taking the car through its gears, I hear a sort of whining noise between 2-3,000 RPM. If I go higher than 3,000 RPM, the pitch increases to the point where it sort of blends in and you really can't hear it. This seems to be an engine noise, not a gearbox noise, as it sounds the same if I rev the engine to 3,000 rpm in neutral or park. My wife pointed this sound out to me -- honest -- I wasn't looking for something to carp about. Anyway, I'd appreciate it if those more experienced owners would advise if this whine is a normal sound or something that needs checking out. As always, many thanks!

POST 2Original post

I noticed the same sound when i picked up my car last year. It's my first Porsche so I wasn't sure what to expect. I put in a PSE and now i get a mean throaty growl instead of the whine. If there is one mod you put on a 996... make sure its a new exhaust.

POST 3Original post

It could be variocam kicking in. Just a dumb guess

POST 4Original post

Dmitri, I have a manual transmission and the car whines through the lower gears. The sound you describe sounds normal for the 996 as long as you car is running smoothly. I would not however take our advice and ignore your issue. You should take your car to the dealership and take it out for a drive with the service manager.

POST 5Original post

The only 996 whining that I know of occurs on the internet

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Update: I had the car in to have the seats replaced per the factory recall, and asked the service rep to have the tech listen to the engine and let me know if anything's up. He just called to say that the whining sound is coming from the alternator, which has a bad bearing and needs to be replaced. Go figure.
