Change the image size in photoshop and save as a jpeg, then choose the jpeg quality to something like 5 and see if that works.

Are most using photoshop, or is the work done by a specialist?

I have noticed several real nice custom avatars in this list forum and on 6 speed (similar to Eric, the plug guy's). I would like to design one for myself.
How are these made? Are most using photoshop, or is the work done by a specialist?
I can't event get my still Avatar to be a clear picture like most of you. When I reduce it to meet the pixel requirements it gets all grainy. What program do you use to keep it clear?

I use Paintshop Pro.
As tot he pixelization issue. If your image does not scale correctly you can scale it to the widest part say 100pix then paste it into a 100x100 (or whatever size new picture).
I took your original picture and reduced its width to 150. Made a new black picture of 150x150 and pasted your picture into it and added the text. Crude for a 2min job but you get the idea.
