Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

So I want to replace my manual mirror with an autodimming one and saw one on E-Bay from a 993.

Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I want to replace my manual mirror with an autodimming one and saw one on E-Bay from a 993.
My dealer says "Maybe" it will fit but does not really know. Has anybody tried this or have an idea whether this will work?
Marc, do you happen to know from which years? Not sure how to get to renntech but will give it a try!
Ed, Yes but I have been able to locate the 2 wires I need from the roof console.
Get the Audi mirror 4B0 857 511C 01C and the Porsche mirror harness 996.612.984.00 (or 996.612.986.00). TSB 6827 (11/98) will show you how to wire it up to the car.
Well, thank you Orient Express!! (beautiful car by the way)
I have already pulled the overhead console and figured out the wiring to connect. I actually bought a Passat mirror from a fellow rennlister who said it would fit (fail!), so feel that I need to be a little more cautious now (he did not return my PM that it would not fit!).
I searched renntech, and did come up with the part number you mentioned, and will continue hunting.
Interestingly, my dealer notes that the window clip is the same for the 993 as the 996 - I am hesitant to buy the E-Bay 993 mirror, however, unless I can verify this and try it and the poster will not allow returns. The parts dept also notes that the window clip is also the same as used in the Cayman through '04.
I appreciate all of the above inputs and will continue hunting.
I have an '03 Passat and can verify that it will not work. The problem with specing an Audipart number and then trying to get it off ebay, is, of course they never give an Audi part number. I'd buy it new from Audi, if it was reasonably priced. Did you buy yours new OE, and for how much?
I found Porsche part number 996 731 511 020 but this seems to be $397 from Pelican - definitely more than I want to spend. The mirror harness is $32, that's not so bad. I'd be very interested in knowing for sure if other mirrors do fit, I miss this feature from my (now totalled) Audi S4.
4B0857511C 01C lists for about $175
Ask for the" interior rear view mirror, automatic anti-dazzle" for a 2005 A4.
Also get 4B9857593 01C which it the wiring harness cover for the mirror. It is about $5.00.
O-Express, that is interesting - The price I got for that model is over $200 from Sunset Audi. They also told me that the '05 and up A4 mirrors are different from that part #. Go figure. This is certainly confusing and why I do not want to buy any from E-Bay if I cannot return it.
And Marc, you are absolutely right, I would have never thought a premium car like this might come without the auto dimming mirror.
Ha!
Someone has bid on the 993 mirror - wonder if he is a RL member.
Marc, If you wife's mirro is gone one night, you will know I've been by.....Seriously, if you try it , let me know.
