Suggestion

check sunset for the prices, i actually got it cheaper than 300 because i ended up getting the rotors from a friend of mine who has a parts shop, they are the zimmerman brand but did not come in a porsche box, i got all the other parts oem from sunset for about $130 (front pads, sensors, dampers).

Suggestion

if your brake wear light comes on i think you have to change the brake sensor since it is worn through, also sometimes they get brittle and brake when you try to change the pads.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

at what mileage have people replaced their pads -front or rear -with moderate driving, not track. have you also replaced your rotors at the same time? have you needed to do both front and rear at the same time? now - the important question what has it cost? the story: brought my car in to swap out my winter wheels and tries for the summer set and got to talking to the service rep about brakes. (i currently have 28000 on my 02 - they sad front pads 60% left - rear 75% left). his answer was around 50,000 or so with a cost of $1000 per axle for pads and rotors? what has been your experience? thanks larry

POST 2Original post

Brake pad and rotor life is a function of use. I changed my pads and rotors at 15k miles, but I do quite a bit of track driving. Given what you said above, you probably have another 15-20k miles on yours. Seems your tech has it pegged right for you.

POST 3Original post

You may or may not need new rotors. If your rotor thickness is ok you can just replace the pads, and it sounds like you have a lot of pad life left, I wouldn't worry about it now. But $1000 per axle sounds a tad high IMO. You may want to go ahead and have the brakes bled with fresh brake fluid if you haven't already done so.

POST 4Original post

My dealer offered to sell me front rotors for $350/pr. for my 996TT.

POST 5Original post

Join your local PCA. Attend a meeting. The club guys generally have a little known shop that works on the local PCA' ers cars. They keep him busy. You don't get in unless you are also a local PCAr and you are a name dropper. As in "(president) Mike xxxx told me to come to your shop because you do all the work for the local PCA clubbers." That's how it works here. Our local guy is a recent dealer mechanic who has gone out on his own. You will find that a pad and rotor change is easy according to the DIY forum on Renntech.org. Therefore it should not be $1000 per axle. Good luck.

POST 6Original post

i changed my front and rear pads at about 32K miles, but not the rotors. i don't do any track driving, but i do drive my C4 pretty hard.

POST 7Original post

i changed my front pads and rotors per renntech.org diy, total cost was about $300 including sensors, dampers etc, bought all the oem parts from sunset porsche. i think i was quoted about 600 by local porsche shops for parts and labor, so $1000 is way off. also, you can bleed your brakes with a $40 motive bleeder and $10 ate fluid.

POST 8Original post

Are you sure this is correct? The cost of 4 rotors without anything else is probably more than $300. I'm not calling you a liar but, I just want to make sure you said what you meant. In my opinion, $1000 for parts (including rotors) and labor sounds about right for a dealer. It may be a little on the high side. I do almost all highway driving and changed the brakes myself at about 60,000 miles. The fronts and rears were worn about the same. I did not change the rotors. b-man 2002 C2 Coupe

POST 9Original post

How do you know if or when to change the brake wear sensors?

POST 10Original post

sorry if i wasnt clear b-man, i only changed out the front, 2 front rotors, front pads etc... check sunset for the prices, i actually got it cheaper than 300 because i ended up getting the rotors from a friend of mine who has a parts shop, they are the zimmerman brand but did not come in a porsche box, i got all the other parts oem from sunset for about $130 (front pads, sensors, dampers). i think sunset sells the porsche rotors for 107 each but im not 100% sure. the only difference is that i think the hub is coated when i compared the 2 the $600 estimate for parts and labor is also for front only. this is in Los angeles area and is not the dealership but independent shops, which have cheaper hourly rates but usually take better care of your car. if you got an estimate for $1000 for front and rear that is reasonable, but i thought you said you got $1000 per axle which may be what porsche dealers are charging but in my opinion is too much for such a simple job. ofer, if your brake wear light comes on i think you have to change the brake sensor since it is worn through, also sometimes they get brittle and brake when you try to change the pads. when i did mine the sensors were actually fine and in tact but i just changed them anyway since i had already bought new sensors and didnt really want to return them. i guess if you routinely check your pad wear you wouldnt need the sensors anyway.
