For the 2000 MY is the speed hack necessary or does the switch change the signal such that the top cam be operated below 25 mph?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I may be the last person on earth to find this out, but just in case.... If you want the little rear windows up along with the front ones when the top is down, just press your finger in the hole where the latch fits on top of the windshield while pressing the rear window buttons. DUH! (Looks a lot "cooler" that way.) Someone please tell me they didn't know this before

POST 2Original post

Oh man, I didn't even think about that! I had to put the big ugly bar code sticker to get into my security gate on the passenger side window because the little window would not come up with the top down. Boy do I feel smart. Thanks for the heads-up.

POST 3Original post

Thanks Don, I have wanted to do this also and never thought of the microswitch for the top. Doh!

POST 4Original post

"I didn't know that", now, if I could just get a cheap "top-up-while-moving" solution I would be ecstatic! Four hundred bucks for the top up hack is a bit much...... BTW Don, why do you suppose Porsche designed the back windows that way?

POST 5Original post

Gretch check here: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=38 It takes about 20 minutes. You can buy a little clip that closes the micro switch. I'd be nervous having the back windows up at speed though. There must be a reason Porsche prevents this.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey Gretch...did anyone ever tell you that you look a lot like Steve McQueen?

POST 8Original post

Cool. It's like things you never knew you wanted - until you saw it! Come to think of it, that's how I found out I wanted a Porsche, too. thanks.

POST 9Original post

cool hack, but why would you want to do this while moving? easy enough to do it while in the driveway or stopped at a light. i've never had the urge to drop the top while driving down the road i do like the idea of a one touch top down operation though.

POST 10Original post

No Don, no one has ever said that.......Grizley Adams maybe, even perhaps "Shreck", but not McQueen. Still, McQueen was the coolest guy that ever lived during my lifetime and one of very few remaining heros to me. So I honor the memory I have of him.......... If it offends anyone, I apologise and request that you put me on your "ignore poster" list. G

POST 11Original post

Oh my god.. i'm gonna run downstairs to try it.. thanks don! is there a safety reason why Porsche decided to have this feature in the first place? eg... could it harm the rear windows if u drive around with the top down and the rear windows up, and the front windows down?? i have seen alot of SAAB convertibles doing this. hmm....

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Uh no, Gretch...the resemblence to Steve McQueen was a joke! Don

POST 13Original post

Great tip, Don. Tried it, and it works on my 2001. Should definitely help the wind buffetting on my kids in back...and hopefully we'll be keeping the top down a little bit more!

POST 14Original post

Don..... Don, so was my response..........Actually the other hero in my life is Winston Churchill, and I prolly look a lot mor like him than I do McQueen.... BTW, the "ignore poster" option is a new found feature on the board for me and I must say I am delighted with it......We have some "tedious folks" over on the 928 board.........whom I have found a solution for. I'm gonna do the "speed sensor clip" this weekend, and the next time I put the top down I will try your trick. What happens when you go to put the top up, do the rear windows go down first?

POST 15Original post

Any of the four windows will still lower properly when the roof is off. Just can't raise the rears without sticking your finger in the hole.

POST 17Original post

I Put the top down for the ride home. I Rolled the rear windows up, per Don's suggestion (along with the wind stop in the up position), I was quite surprised to find that the wind turbulance is significantly reduced with those "little winglets" I guess that is the reason why they put them on all the big jets now...... BTW. if the rear windows are up and you actuate the top to close, the rear windows automatically go down.

POST 18Original post

deputydog95, I have the one-touch switch installed and my 04 C4S Cab allows for the top up/down while driving under 30MPH... I can't even explain how convenient this feature is. If you're in traffic and it starts to rain, no problem... it's really sunny and hot out and you're in slow moving traffic, no problem. I push the button as soon as I hit my driveway and by the time I get into the garage the top is up As for the rear windows, this is a new one, never heard that before but I'll try it. Really wish I knew why Porsche did this? There must be a good reason... Rob

POST 19Original post

rob, what did the switch cost you, is it still around $400 ?

POST 20Original post

I've got the SharkWorks one touch and it was about $150.00.

POST 21Original post

site reference? I went to the site and the product is no longer available.....who else makes it?

POST 22Original post

Gretch - I have the switch from Bahntech. So far, so good. www.bahntech.com

POST 23Original post

Yes, that's where I got mine from too. The wiring colors on the 04 C4s Cab were different then the instructions but I just matched them from the old switch You shouldn't have a problem with your cab. I tried the rear window trick and it worked in the c4s... still curious as to the reason Porsche doesn't put the rear windows up.

POST 24Original post

for those that used the bahntech, did you hook up the speed sensor as well? was it a pain? seems like a good safety device if use the hack to disable the handbrake. $150 sounds very reasonable.

POST 25Original post

forget the parking brake hack, but don't worry about the speed sensor.

POST 26Original post

oops...typed too fast. what I meant was don't do the parking brake hack. Do the speed sensor hack. Then you can start putting up the top as you pull into a parking spot.

POST 27Original post

redcab: you'd still have to click the ebrake up a notch to get it to work though, right? did you hook the speed sensor up to the one touch module?

POST 28Original post

OK, this is very odd. Last night I tried to put the rear windows up while holding the latch button and it worked.... today it doesn't work - very strange.

POST 29Original post

Red Cab- Did you have to cut the speedo wire at the cab control box in the rear of the car to make the Bahntech work while moving??

POST 30Original post

Thanks, I just ordered it. For the 2000 MY is the speed hack necessary or does the switch change the signal such that the top cam be operated below 25 mph?

POST 31Original post

??? I was able to put my "winglets" up this morning for the drive to work. Are you holding the switch down far enough?

POST 32Original post

No. You need to do the speed hack if you want to put the top down while driving.

POST 34Original post

Deputydog - yes, you have to make one click (at least) on the handbrake. I do this while the car is in motion without any fear that the brake is actually engaging in any meaningful way. (I've driven down the block with it fully engaged, so I wonder how strong a brake it is anyway). I consider it a minimally disruptive safety switch, just in case my passenger was to hit the cab button at freeway speeds. RexRacerX & Gretch - yes, cutting the speed sensor wire under the cab boot is necessary on the 996 to allow the top to move while the car is in motion. (Note that this is completely independent of installing the Bahntech (or other) switch in the dash. The dash switch is really just a timer, that holds your virtual finger for a set amount of time. And yes, I had a huge shake of fear as I put the wire cutters on that speed sensor wire....but it all turned out properly and I enjoy the convenience now. It really is not too difficult to get to, just be certain that you've got the right one out of the bundle!

POST 35Original post

I left the handbrake sensor wire too for the same reasons. You'd hate for that button to get accidently pushed going 90 mph. It's nice to have the light on the dash that reminds you it's on. Here's the wire:

POST 36Original post

Thanks Redcab. Speedo wire surgery is scheduled for tonight.

POST 37Original post

wouldn't the easiest thing to do be: hook up the kit hook up the speed sensor with the kit disable the handbrake switch this would allow you to just hit the button with no worries of accidentially putting the top down at speed and you wouldn't have to engage the handbrake.

POST 38Original post

I wish...The speed sensor that comes on the Bahntech device only stops the top from being raised at >25 mph. Without the speed sensor wire hooked up it is 0 - top speed. I haven't found an easy parking brake hack yet. Waz was working on something. I'm just waiting to see what he comes up with.

POST 39Original post

DepDog - it's your choice! I wasn't able to consider the speed sensor hookup that comes with the Bahntech device, because I have the HiFi stereo option. When you have the HiFi option, there is no speed sensor available at the radio. (It adjusts the volume depending on speed). So I guess I couldn't even think about the option your considering for too long.
