Suspected cause

As others have suggested it was probably an underinflated tire that caused the blowout, the SO-3's in particular have a very stiff sidewall so it's kind of hard to tell that they are underinflated by just looking at it.

Suggestion

I've run 5 sets of 265/35/18's and 275/35/18's of SO3's on my track car, for many track events as well as driving up and down the state of CA and never had a single problem with them, very durable and reliable tire.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Coming up from Monterey Sat., doing about 75 mph in my Cab. I had SO3's installed in late Nov 03. The tires have 3,000 mi. I felt some chatter thru out the car, then a bang (like I hit large lane reflector), pulled over to to the shoulder under control & parked. I have 265/35 18s in the rear. They're real low profile and the tire looked like it had air in it. I couldn't find my damn lug nut key & called triple A. I asked the driver to try and fill it. He said it's coming out faster then I'm putting in. He reaches behind the rim and says, my hand's in the tire. What??? He didn't have a lug nut key & I was towed 35mi. (ouch). I got the tire off at the dealer and 3/4 of the tire inside was ripped open. OK, with only 3K miles the tire shouldn't blow, but I am impressed with the tire carcass after the blow, it tracked real good. Anyone else have a similar situation.

POST 2Original post

3/4 rip on the inside....sounds like the tire was underinflated. How long were you driving before the tire blew...at least 30-45 min of spirited driving right? With low profile tires sometimes it's difficult to tell that the air pressure is low just by looking at it.

POST 3Original post

I had a blow out at about 65, hit a pothole out of nowhere this winter on lovely NY roads...it was my front, and they Dunlop Winter Sport M2s, like you said, the car was still very controllable.

POST 4Original post

I had blowout under the same circumstances, but my rear completely disintegrated. Once you have a blowout, you will never know what caused. Low air, high speed produce super heated air inside of tire and is very conducive to exploding. Short of getting air pressure sensors installed, there is no way to prevent it.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I think you're right. My daughter has been driving the car (bless her heart); I found two hair brushes, but couldn't find the lug nut lock.... (like who is ever going to need that Dad!!)

POST 6Original post

not exactly a similar situation, but... i was in 2nd gear taking an exit off memorial drive in boston, then going right into an opposite turn. i had it up around 6800 RPM as i went into the second corner doing about 70. next thing i know, the car spins sideways so i'm facing the inside of the corner, i correct, end up facing the opposite edge of the road, correct again, and managed to straighten it out without hitting anything on the little single lane road! in my case it looks like what happened was i hit a slight bump in the road where they'd ripped up the pavement and repaved, but the repaved portion was slightly lower then the rest of the road. as i came through the corner, my left rear tire had so much sideways pressure on it that it actually separated the bead from the rim and let all of the air out of the tire in a big rush as it hit this little bump sideways. i've never heard of that happening before! the tire was ok afterwards except that i had to drive a few hundred feet before i could get to a spot to safely change it, which ended up wrecking one of the sidewalls.

POST 7Original post

Back when I was riding motorcycles, I was on my BMW K100RS on the Angeles Crest highway and as I came around a corner there was a 6" rock directly in my path. I hit it with the front wheel doing about 50mph and held on tight. After a quick shudder from the front forks, I was past it. I couldn't believe that it didn't take the tire out from under me. But about 10 seconds later the steering got really heavy. I pulled over and found that the rock had bent the alloy rim away from the tire and let the air out. BMW happens to provide a nice little tire repair kit that includes compressed air (CO2?) cartridges to fix flats. We found another rock and pounded the rim until it was back to its (almost) original form, filled up the tire and rode home - not exceeding 40 mph. This was my last ride before I was going to sell the bike. It turned out to be a very expensive day.
