Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

2002 C4s - but requires quite a bit of travel to pick it up, had the RMS replaced (my front runner)

Any way, I've heard of P owners having the RMS replaced even when not spotting the garage floor.

As long as the PPI comes out clean, any of the cars will be a good choice.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm digging around for my first 911, have a few 996 prospects. Some have had the RMS replaced, some have not. Is there any feelings on if the RMS leak will always happen, and I should just find a car that has had it replaced. Or are there lots of examples out there with no RMS issues and it is just internet hoopla?
So far I've got a crazy list of prospects so I'm stuck in the middle:
1997 Targa with low miles (but does not have the modern feel of the 996/997)
2002 C4s - but requires quite a bit of travel to pick it up, had the RMS replaced (my front runner)
2004 40th anniversary edition (a bit pricey), no RMS issues reported
2005 997 with low miles (base model)
2006 997 S (Highest price, higher miles but WOW, what a rocket)
Opinions from the 996 crew? The 2002 C4s is my top prospect due to it's car for the $. But I'm worried about all the hoopla with the RMS.
Thanks for your thoughts.
I just went through same and decided on a 40th AE based on the extra options and X51 package that it came with. After PPI came back with a slight RMS seal leak I just negotiated that into price and had the local Porsche dealer do the RMS and an IMS upgrade at same time. Cost was about $2,100.00 including RMS/IMS and some other minor stuff but in exchange for being able to sleep at night that was cheap
re RMS, I had a 996 for 7 years, no problems and still have a Boxster, had over 8 years, same M96 motor and it's always been dry. I've never considered RMS issues chronic, but I work on Harleys. If they never leak, better check the oil. Any way, I've heard of P owners having the RMS replaced even when not spotting the garage floor. I think it may be moneymaker for dealers.
Targas are top heavy and have top issues, just so you know.
Travel is good.
Newer is sometimes better
RMS is a non issue
The one you like best will always be regarded as such, get it or get over it and find another.
all I am hearing is RMS RMS RMS
the RMS is a seal... it either leaks or it does not.. I would not worry one second about the RMS (unless a PPI says it's leaking, then negociate a repair into the sale price)
how about telling us what you plan to do with the car, where you live, and what attracts you to such a huge range of cars...
or just get the 06' S
you might read mt "post of the year" link in my signature too
40th ed for me.... x51 package is $17K alone.... while having the rms replaced is nice, it should be a secondary item. Get a nice example, PPI then pull the trigger. When I get my clutch done I plan to over haul the RMS area of the car..... think of it as maintenance and upgrades.
As for the other cars.
C4S is the best looking for sure..... if thats the priority, get that.
40th.... up to par with the 997S performance wise.
997 05.... nope, bad year, same engine as the 996
997 S..... great car, for the money.... get the 996 turbo.
There are deals out there..... dont be afraid to have the car shipped. Get a membership here..... plenty of cars popping up in the for sale section.
Also, dont be afraid to ask for other Rennlist members to scope out a car for you if its worth for you to check it out in person.... we love driving these cars and would be happy to take it out on a test drive.
Anyone near Holt Motorsports in WestChester PA? I'm located down in Washington DC so a 3 hour drive to kick the tires is a haul. Tim Holt has a lapis blue 2002 C4s for sale. That is my front runner. I'd love to have someone do a once over on it and tell me if it is just a good looking picture set, or if it is the real deal.
If you're a mechanic, we could talk about a price for a PPI to be done once I get closer to my decision. I'm trying to sell an existing ride, once that is cleared I'd pull the trigger on the new ride.
What i'm looking for is a daily driver. Really a driver. Year round. I don't want a garage queen. These cars are too pretty to sit still under a cover. No track time, just tooling around and melting rural roads.
so for year round in DC the C4 can be an advantage for sure. have you driven any P-cars to feel the differance in weight/handling?
that info above helps, thanks for sharing
I will move it to a new thread, thanks for the suggestion.
I've driven the C4s and the C2s. The weight is not too bad of a difference. The steering feel is not quite as sharp/connected, but not too bad considering the added 4 wheel drive pull out of the corners. Traction in rain would be a huge plus.
I'm coming from a C5 corvette so anything will feel sharper.
There is a beautiful Midnight blue 996TT ruf for sale in the member to member sales section. Owner needs surgury on shoulder and can no longer drive stick. If I had $50K to spend on a car, this is it..
"2003 996 TT X50 6-Speed, Midnight Blue Metallic / Natural Grey, 19" Ruf RTurbo Wheels, Ruf Exhaust, Ruf Bilstein PSS9, Ruf Strut Tower, Ruf Rear Sway, SSK, Ruf Pedals, Full Leather"
As long as the PPI comes out clean, any of the cars will be a good choice. My personal choice would be the C2S as it is the newest model of your choices.
Also, I am in the "get an aftermarket warranty" camp.

it is the sliding glass targa, not the pull out plastic targa. It is quite nice. I know the owner (only owner) and it has been 100% maintained well. That gives me some confidence. + it is the lowest price of the lot.
I was in your shoes last year. I couldnt decide on buying a 996 c2 or c4s. However the 4s with wide body, turbo brakes and suspension and being a fully loaded car was hard to pass up. I really wanted to have a rear wheel drive Porsche but in the end the C4S was too sweet to pass up. Now, if I could afford a 997s then, like others have said, i wouldve bought a 996 turbo. Good luck with your decision.
