I am in no way a driver that will be aggressively changing gears and thus have no concerns about the synchros.

If your shift style is nice and easy with a pause between gear changes, no problem, on the other hand if you rip through the gears....oh well

Do you really think WW would pass up using a simple bracket and charging an arm and leg for it?

Having said all that I would stick with the in car short shifters, like the B&M or Porsche unit, it's what the factory uses so there must be a good reason.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am interested in buying a SSK and was wondering where I could get either the Porsche or the B&M at a good price.
I know that the Porsche kit is a rebadged B&M but I think my local P-Dealer will not like the B&M kit. At the same time though I am not going to pay a ridiculous price for the Porsche kit (US$827 in Oz installed)
Am I crazy to expect to be able to buy the kit for about US$450?
The Porsche kit is pretty poor; at least compared to other kits I have on other cars. It is too noisy and to stiff and too imprecise. I'd go for something else...
I have the PORSCHE factory Short Shift kit on a brand new C4S and find the shifts tight but very positive. It won't make your engagement of gears any quicker, but the throws are positive and precise. I couldn't imagine driving the car with the long shifts. The throws 1-2, 3-4 are just are about 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 inches. Very nice. Not noisy. I'd go for it.
All of the short shift kits will shift the gears quicker, sometimes too quick, which can be a big problem if the synchros can't keep up with the shift. Remember the 996 transmission is a non-servicable unit, if you burn up one of the brass synchros you buy another transmission! Granted, much of the wear and tear will depend on the driver. If your shift style is nice and easy with a pause between gear changes, no problem, on the other hand if you rip through the gears....oh well

Do you really think WW would pass up using a simple bracket and charging an arm and leg for it? With the in car SSK, effort is only minimally increased and engagement is very positive. I would suggest the Porsche short shifter, even though it's the same thing as B&M, a couple of hundred bucks more is nothing compared to the cost of transmission replacement (about $9K).
I am really after the Porsche kit as I know I wont have an issue with any warranty claims from the dealer with it. If I install the B&M kit you never know.
