Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'oxygen sensors' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'oxygen sensors' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check engine code diagnosed' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

The shop changed positions of the coils and for the last 5,000 miles haven't had the light again!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Waiting for a red light and the check engine light came on.
Seems to run fine.
Checked the gas cap when I got home__OK
Guess I'm Mot going for a ride tomorrow...
Suggestions anyone?
If it was a temporary issue, the light will go off after 15 start/stop cycles without the problem reoccurring (It will be logged in fault memory for later review). Could be many things, but without an OBDC II reader or the Porsche reader you don't know what happened. The light only alerts you that an out of specification event has happened.
Go for your ride, It won't be like the car is going to explode or leave you stranded.
If it isn't flashing you can still drive it.
Mine was an electrical transient in one of the coils. The shop changed positions of the coils and for the last 5,000 miles haven't had the light again!
Only the shop computer can tell.
My check engine light comes up every so often (3 times/year), and usually goes away within 2 days each time. I took it to the dealer the first time (they couldn't find anything wrong with the car) and have been ignoring the light since. IMO the check engine light is simply TOO sensitive. Funny thing is that the one time something broke (RMS), the light didn't come on =P
O2 sensors are easy to replace, you may have to get a special socket to to it, but that is about it (the sockets are a standard size, and any auto parts store has them). Was it the upstream or downstream sensors that were setting off the light?
