POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

When I first started looking at Porsches, I was amazed at how few miles per year they get driven on average. It seems that while some owners do use them as daily drivers, most use them as weekend toys. I use mine as a mostly-daily driver (sunny days only) and I leave early/late to avoid the bad rush hour traffic so the car can run at decent speeds without a lot of starting/stopping. Of course I also use it as a weekend toy too :-) But I'm curious about the rest of you... How much do you drive your car and why? If you don't put a lot of miles on it per year, what are the factors behind that (e.g. ride comfort, mileage, resale, parking, etc...)?

POST 3Original post

weekend driver mostly. 200miles per weekend ;o) learn to get lost often.

POST 4Original post

2 to 3 times a week...about the same as John...200 miles a week. Less in the Winter/Rainy Season...

POST 5Original post

It's my only car, and that's the way I like it. I put on about 17,000 miles a year.

POST 6Original post

Kind of stuck. I only have P-Cars, but I do put alot of miles on my cars. Maybe average 2,500 per month. I try and put most of these on the 04 996.

POST 7Original post

Don't drive my car much, I don't work in the best of neighborhoods so the C2 only gets exercised on the weekends. I wish I could drive my car on a daily basis.

POST 8Original post

My '00 Turbo has now over 146'000 km. Story here: http://www.911turbo.com/feature/2003-12/index.php Greetings, --Pierre

POST 9Original post

1st. month required surgical removal to get me out of car. Restrict myself to about 5K/pa. Sadly, we have so many speed traps/GATSO cameras that real exercise (if you take my drift) is a bit risky. Best so far is 6.5K in 6th at about 2am on an unlit dual carriageway. Dipped beam was a bit of a joke, and I couldn't hear the stereo either, but the car was rock steady.

POST 10Original post

i have had my car 2 months now to the day and i have 7600 miles on it, i bought it with 700

POST 11Original post

Hey Peter B the best place to 'exercise' is on any dual carriage way overpass...no gatos, no speed traps, just gotta to watch out for undercover. Because they can't change the film on an over pass without closing down a lane and it's a big headache...2/3 am A40 overpass in london....

POST 12Original post

It's our only car and we have put on 16K in the past 9 months. I didn't buy the car to have it sit around. Once you've driven a C4S in all conditions, there is no going back to anything else!

POST 13Original post

Daily - But with the winter months now - I will use it only on clear days - SNOW=NO DRIVE TARGA :-)

POST 14Original post

Doug H, I wish I had your problems. ONLY P-CARS, lucky dog!!

POST 15Original post

I put 2000/miles a month on some of the worst roads... rain, snow, wind or rain. At first it put up a fight, had some problems with it that were covered under warranty... then it's spirit was broken and it's been a great daily car ever since. Rob

POST 16Original post

Dayly driver all year round, 90,000Km. I only don't drive it on few ocasions when its absoultely necesary (space, ground clearance, etc) since the 996 is the only car that makes driving fun enough.

POST 17Original post

Daily driver but since I work out of my house (a 33 step commute from bedroom to office) I only end up with 1K miles per month. But a good 750 of those miles are daily chores like going to the market, home depot, soccer practice with my son etc. My prior 996 (my2000) averaged 2500 miles a month with zero problems.

POST 18Original post

21,000 miles in six months. daily driver, toy, and i have learned to get lost even on the way home from the grocery store. i often turn the 2 mile drive home into a 1 hour adventure.

POST 19Original post

my car gets exercised daily to within an inch of it's life. 3,000 miles is what i average a month. i take it everywhere--regardless of parking limitations and sketchty neighborhoods, etc. these things are meant to be driven daily...i pitty owners who somehow think they're custodians of the last remaining p-cars and treat them like garage queens.

POST 20Original post

It's my only car as well, and I average about 1,700 miles per month...

POST 21Original post

It's my third car and so far it has averaged about 560 miles per month. Most of my driving is now on Sundays, long as they are dry. No point driving it any other day of the week (well, maybe Saturday afternoons) cuz of traffic.

POST 22Original post

I drive mine to work almost every day. I also have a 93 Integra that gets driven just enough to keep the battery happy, or when I need to park for a few days at the airport. But work is close enough that after 3.5 years I'm only at 30,000 miles (800 on the new engine thanks to RMS). Bob

POST 23Original post

KW is that a typo? 21K, do you work in another state?

POST 24Original post

Almost 4 years old and just clocked 34,000 miles. I generally use my other car (Alfa Romeo 147 Cloverleaf) for trips to the shops. The porker is a fun car and I bought it for that purpose....hence a cab in UK weather......i.e., wait for the sun to come out....someday 34k is quite high for a non-daily but it proves how much I like to take it out. The Alfa is really my daily driver. But if I have a long trip (and I usuallt have to drive to London once a month), I use the beast. In snow, it stays in the garage. I figure I spend that much time cleaning and polishing it that taking it out in the snow defeats the object.

POST 26Original post

day, night, sun, rain, sleet, snow, track - daily driver!! I didn't wait 35 years to let my Carrera sit in the garage!

POST 27Original post

During the nice weather, I drive my 996 C4 ~1000 mi/month. But in the lousy weather it relaxes in the garage and I let my other car get all salty.

POST 28Original post

Daily driver for my wife who takes it to work. On the weekends do a total of about 250 miles from Manhattan to the Hamptons and back. Only time we don't drive it is when there's really bad snow and ice. '02 cab. Took delivery in Oct. 2001. Has 37k mi. Our previous car, a '99 cab, was also a daily driver and had 55k mi. when we traded it in after 3yrs.

POST 29Original post

laj...i work at home! like i said, i get lost frequently. ha ha really, i've driven half way across the US four times and to the north carolina mountains twice in it. living in a state with one hill (the causeway over the river)...i'm inclined to take road trips frequently. i bet i'll have 50K miles my first year. i have 375,000 miles on my honda. i love to drive

POST 30Original post

oh, and i especially drive it in the rain. i had to say that since so many people, including my brother, won't get their porsche out of the garage unless the sun is shining.

POST 31Original post

I am fortunate to always have had 2 cars to drive so the Porsche is driven about 5k miles per year. I just looked at the speedo on my 4 year and 4 month old baby and it shows 21k miles.

POST 32Original post

Mine is a year 'round daily driver. That's means it's driven in rain, snow, and everything else. It's got over 53,000 miles on it. I believe it's the highest mileage 2002 911 in the world. I've only waxed it twice because I'm so busy driving it. I'm trying to catch up to Pierre from Switzerland! b-man

POST 34Original post

Daily driver. I've put 10k miles on mine in 7 months. I typically drive 12k-15k a year. I buy a car to DRIVE it, not for it to sit in the garage to be looked at.

POST 35Original post

Mine is not a daily driver, but I drive her a lot on weekends and maybe once a week to work. I'm doing about 900 miles per month, mostly because I wander around on weekend mornings looking for fun roads (sometime across 2 states). And that's with days off for snow/ice lately. I'm sure I'll do over 1200 miles a month once the weather gets better. Meanwhile, I do about 400 miles a month on my "daily driver". Oh well, no mint 5 year old car for me. Too much fun. But my daily driver will only do 5k miles per year, so that will last me a long time!

POST 36Original post

12k a year, car is only on the road 8.5 months a year.............

POST 37Original post

i've only got 1 car and i drive it to work every day! i think it would be insane not to drive these things.

POST 38Original post

I put 1500 miles in the first 2 weeks in Europe (european delivery) then I got the car to California: I feel sorry for the folks on the east coast, yes that was the temperature last weekend when I took this pic

POST 39Original post

I feel sorry for the folks on the east coast, yes that was the temperature last weekend when I took this pic [/B][/QUOTE] GGGRRRHHHH!

POST 41Original post

Mine isn't a daily driver. However, I try to drive it daily, at least to the gym. I took her on a nice 180mi drive today after brunch and we really enjoyed ourselves. Can't wait till my detailing supplies are delivered later this week. After golf this wkend, I am going to spend the afternoon beautifing my 2nd love... My wife's so jealious, I now have to buy her a new Mini Cooper so she can have as much fun as me.

POST 42Original post

Whew! I thought it was just me! Thanks for the it's-not-me-it's-him check. So true. The way I look at it, my car was made for the rain. Of course it likes sun, too. And the clouds! And wind, and fog!! and, and, then we're gonna drive on the highway!! and then the backroads!! And on the CONCRETE!! AND THEN THE ASPHALT!! AND WITH THE TOP DOWN!! ALL ACROSS THE STATE.... TO LOUISIANA!! THEN MISSISSIPPI!! ALABAMA!! GEORGIA!! AND THEN WE'RE GONNA GO WASHINGTON D.C. and, er, Sorry, had a non-presidential moment, there. I'm averaging 500mi per month, but only because my work puts me on a plane much of the time. Otherwise I drive the hell out of it.

POST 43Original post

b-man...try this..... 30,000 since last June (10 months). by the time mine is 2 years old i'll have over 70K.

POST 44Original post

I drive it every chance I get. Can't imagine leaving it sit when I could be driving.

POST 45Original post

this thread has been going on for over 3 mos!!

POST 46Original post

i got a 996 pm 3/3/04 with 6 miles on it. today it has 5900 miles. i ony drive it for fun, no commute ;o)

POST 47Original post

I just put 1,600 miles in 4 days on my 2002 C2. I do not drive it like that all the time. It just hit 28k miles. The 996 is not my only vehicle. I just drive a lot!

POST 48Original post

Sorry to get a bit off-topic, but my good old 996 Turbo (now with 159'680 km on the clock!) is still able to beat a 360 Challenge Stradale from a rolling start!... We had a little race last Saturday at the Nrburgring, and I started in 3rd position, just behind the 360 CS. I couldn't believe it, but I passed him about 150-200m before the first turn. After a few more turns, everybody was out of sight... So yeah, my Turbo survived another 4 days at the Nrburgring with some great laps on the Nordschleife. Besides that, the trip back home accross Germany was fun: sustained 270+ km/h for unusually long periods, and quite some time above 300 too. Boy, that car still rocks! To summarize it: DRIVE 'EM HARD, THEY'LL LIKE IT AS MUCH AS YOU WILL! Greetings, --Pierre

POST 49Original post

pierre- you are an inspiration to all of us!! 300 kph is over 190 mph!! you are fortunate to be able to drive the autobahn in germany. such speed would land us in jail in the u.s.!! keep on rolling, pierre!!

POST 50Original post

Hey, thanks Ignacio! And yep, I'll try to keep on rolling... --Pierre

POST 51Original post

Ok, now I'm up to just over 63,000 miles! b-man

POST 52Original post

50,000 miles divided by 5 years equals 10,000 miles per year. I have driven my car from my home in south Florida to the Porsche Parades in Mont Tremblant, Canada.....Sacramento, CA....and Milwaukee, WI. Other than that, everything else is getting to and from the track or autocross. In other words, I drive my car the way it was meant to be driven and she keeps coming back for more. Definitely my kind of women!!

POST 53Original post

I drive about 22000 miles a year in the Pcar! I just took the winter tires and the hardtop off! I drive in all weather! Unfortunately some a hole backed into my car about two months ago and smashed the bumper and hood. He took off, the mall had him on camera but we could not see tyhe plate.... $1500 later and its like new again, but it sat in the garage for two months and the battery died... I had to get a new battery. I am finally OVER the damage and driving daily again!! I missed driving my baby!!

POST 54Original post

Ha! My first post since I became a new Rennlist member today. I drive my 99 cab daily 50mi roundtrip to work. If I tag on weekend drives and errands I make up just to drive and I'm around 1500 - 2000 mi/mo. I love the p-car as a daily driver. I just sold my 300ZX which was supposed to be my daily driver because every time the P-car sat in the garage I kept thinking how much I'd rather be driving it.
