Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

In yesterday's Silver State Classic: Tim and Cheryl took first place in the 160mph class in a 928 Jon and Nicole were first in 135mph in a 997 Hermina and I came second in 120mph in a 996 Jim and Claude were second in 115mph in a 964 Turbo. Out of the three Ferraris, one came second in 105mph. The sole Lamborghini placed sixth in 135mph. I'm just sayin...

POST 2Original post

That soooo cool How many cars entered this year?

POST 3Original post

Great going Simon, congratulations to you and the other winning P-cars !

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

About 120 cars, all in all. Other exotics included some Panteras, an Elise, a Corvair that won the 170mph class(!), a McLaren M6 replca, a couple of Ford GTs, and an NSX. There was also a gorgeous '68 fastback Mustang that I lusted after all weekend. The balance was mostly made up of Mustangs, Corvettes and Vipers, though the pluckest entrant won the 95mph class yet again in a '98 Saturn.

POST 5Original post

What kind of weenie shows up to a performance drive in a saturn???

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What kind of snob looks down on someone who competes in whatever he can afford?

POST 7Original post

Hey bummer you took that the wrong way. Whatever though

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry - I guess I typed too soon. It's just that Richard (the Saturn driver) is a good guy, and I like the way he doesn't worry about being "outclassed". Maybe you can come up from Vegas for the September race.

POST 9Original post

Is there a URL to all the results? Oh, and very cool on the Saturn! =)

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The results should be online in a few days. The website is www.sscc.us

POST 11Original post

Curious... what limited your speed to 120mph? Is it the car, turns, driver comfort level?

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Speed categories are limited by the safety equipment in the car. In our case, we didn't have firesuits so we couldn't go beyond the 125mph class (which allows maximum speeds of 140mph), and we chose 120mph because the navigation is much simpler at 30 seconds per mile. Roughly, the categories are - Average speed 95-110, max speed 124: fire extinguisher required - Average 115-125, max 140: add 6-point harnesses - Average 130-150, max 165: add rollbar and fireproof suits - Average 160 and up: add full cage, fire system and fuel cell. In practical terms this means that an average speed of 150mph is the limit for a typical road car. For details, see the rules at www.sscc.us In terms of the car, I'm not sure whether a stock 996 could achieve 150mph average with me at the wheel - particularly at an altitude of 6500 feet. However, we plan to step up to 135 in September and see where we go from there.

POST 13Original post

What was the top average speed this year? And what drove it?

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The 170mph Corvair. There were no entrants for 180mph, and Richard Hille's Unlimited car didn't make it to the finish. If you take a look at previous years' results, you'll see that the finish rate for speeds above 160mph is pretty low: it takes a very powerful motor to achieve those sorts of speeds at altitude, and cooling seems to be a common problem.

POST 15Original post

Simon, congratulations on a great finish. I can't do September, but I would love to join you next year. Thanks for the information.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It's that time again! Hermina and I will be heading off tomorrow afternoon for Sunday's 20th running of the Silver State Classic. I've acquired a pair of race suits, so we can now have a shot at averaging 135 mph, which will allow us to hit a maximum of 165. That's about 20 mph faster than I've ever driven, so I'm looking forward to a new experience It's definitely time some more Pcar drivers came along, but we'll try to maintain May's 100% Porsche podium record!

POST 17Original post

Fantastic job Simon!!! Every year we had several entrants from the LV region PCA chapter enter the event and they would always do well. I'll have to check out the results when they post and see if any of my old Porsche club buddies did well. We don't have anything like that out here on the west coast but we do have they best road courses you cold ever hope to drive!

We had 9 Pcars this time, ranging from a couple of 80s Carreras to Jon's 997 S and Tim and Cheryl's rocketship 928. We got 5 podium positions in total, though I spoiled the outcome by missing the podium by 0.008 seconds (grrr). Results are at http://www.silverstateclassic.com/results-07-sscc.html

POST 19Original post

Wow, in a little over a year since I have been away these people I knew that participated from Vegas has changed! I only recognized one person and their result doesn't surprise me (poor result). Great job Simon

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Dell. I hope you'll join us some time - it's pretty easy to pick up a rental 350Z at McCarran...

POST 21Original post

Congrat's Simon...maybe one day I will finish my Mustang and compete, would be in the higher end classes though. BTW...I remember my days drag racing at Sears Point on Wednesday nights. This guy would show-up in a Station Wagon (not in great shape - in other words not built for the strip, small block chevy and an auto) every Wednesday and dial-in at 16.8 and run that consistently on each run and usually walked away with the trophy and money at the end of the night while others dialed in a lot lower and were eliminated. I guess I am putting this with the Saturn runner and that is it's not what you brung but what you can do with it that counts

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Richard's spirit in his Saturn is great. My other favorite contestant is Charlie Friend, who regularly runs his 1965 Corvair in the 160 class. I have no clue what's underneath the ugly red primer, but it definitely works! I hope you get the Mustang finished and dialed in for a trip to Ely. I'd love to see it in action.

POST 23Original post

Hey Simon: Congrats!! Great to hear Porsche dominating the podium this year.

POST 24 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Phil! Maybe you'd like to join us next time?

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Time to resurrect an old thread: we had a very good Pcar turnout at the NORC on 5/17, including a gorgeous GT3RS and a GT2. Tim and Cheryl won their 160mph class in the monstrous 928-based missile. and there were two other Pcar podiums. As for me? I was driving my fiancee's stock automatic 2000 Honda Civic in the 105mph class (Cayman on the wrong coast, etc, etc). I discovered that the Civic will eventually reach 111mph in 3 at 7300rpm (redline at 7k ) and that D is such a tall overdrive that the revs drop to 4000rpm and speed decays on any but the steepest downhill section. My foot didn't come off the gas for the first 70 miles! Still, we must have been doing something right because we won our class thanks to my fiancee's fabulous navigation, just beating an Aston Vantage!

POST 26Original post

Congrats! I wish we had something like this on the east coast.

Sorry if this is a repost, but I got curious about this Corvair and Googled it: This Corvair from hell owned by Charlie Friend of Alamogordo, New Mexico, features an all-C4 Corvette suspension, a 406-inch Mouse for motivation, and a Porsche 930 turbo transaxle. It posted an average speed of 166 mph. c: Car Craft Magazine So, it's part Porsche too...

It's just fabulous! At first glance, it looks like a bucket of bolts. Then you hear it firing up, and start to realise just what an amazing machine it is... Well, it's only a 2500 mile drive The day after the race, Hermina and I continued her relocation to Delaware by driving the laden Civic through AZ,UT, CO, WY, SD, MN, MI, OH, PA to my my place. It took us 7 days, and a lot of good eating! I'm seriously considering shipping the Cayman to Nevada in September or next May, flying in for the race, then doing another week-long road trip to come home.

POST 31Original post

Absolutely cool! Congratulations! Tim should be proud, apparently not all Hondas are POSs - this one beat an Aston... Rudy
